Choose etcd3 for a new control-plane or metadata service that needs linearizable reads, revision-based transactions, and built-in leases, locks, or elections. Choose ZooKeeper when your application relies on its hierarchical znode paths, session-owned ephemeral nodes, established integrations, or existing operational expertise. Both replicate coordination data through a quorum, but their client-visible models and consistency behavior differ.
How ZooKeeper and etcd3 differ
ZooKeeper is a coordination service organized around a shared hierarchy of znodes. etcd3 is a strongly consistent key-value store whose v3 API exposes revisions, MVCC, transactions, and coordination features. Neither is simply a drop-in substitute for the other: choosing between them means choosing the data model and failure behavior that your application will depend on.
| Decision point | Apache ZooKeeper | etcd3 |
|---|---|---|
| Data organization | Hierarchical namespace of znodes and paths | Key-value space with MVCC and monotonically increasing revisions |
| Read consistency | Ordinary reads can be stale; they are sequentially consistent, not linearizable | Linearizable reads are supported; clients can select from the documented consistency modes |
| Coordination model | Client sessions, ephemeral znodes, watches, and ACLs; higher-level recipes are often provided by Curator | Leases, watches, transactions, locks, and elections are available through project APIs |
| Replication | Leader and followers use Zab-style atomic broadcast and quorum acknowledgements | Raft replicates data in one replication group |
| Client interface | ZooKeeper protocol and language bindings | gRPC API, with broad language support and an HTTP/JSON gateway |
| Scaling boundary | Local reads can benefit read-heavy workloads; writes require quorum synchronization | Strong ordering applies within one group; the data is not horizontally sharded |
| Natural fit | Existing ZooKeeper applications or workflows built around paths and session ownership | New strongly consistent metadata and control-plane services |
What the consistency difference means in practice
ZooKeeper writes and reads
ZooKeeper orders writes through its leader-and-follower quorum. The Apache ZooKeeper Internals documentation states that write operations are linearizable: a successful write has a single position in the ordered history. Ordinary reads are different. A connected server may answer from local state, so a read can return data that has not yet caught up with a recent write. ZooKeeper describes these reads as sequentially consistent, not linearizable.
That distinction matters when a client reads immediately after a change and assumes the response reflects the newest committed state. If the application needs a stronger synchronization point, it must use an appropriate quorum operation rather than assume every local read is current. ZooKeeper’s guarantees also include atomicity, a single-system image, reliability, and timeliness; these describe its coordination behavior, not a general-purpose database interface.

etcd3 reads and revisions
etcd3 supports linearizable reads, and its v3.6 API documentation describes the consistency choices available to clients. Its MVCC revisions provide an ordering signal across modifications in the key space. Transactions can compare state and conditionally write, which lets an application express operations such as “update this value only if the observed version is still current.”
Do not treat the word “strongly consistent” as a substitute for specifying the client’s read mode and failure behavior. Quorum availability, network round trips, retries, and what the application does when a quorum cannot be reached all belong in the design. The etcd API documentation is versioned at v3.6; check the documentation matching the version you deploy.

Sessions, watches, and coordination primitives
When ZooKeeper’s znode model helps
ZooKeeper’s hierarchical paths can map naturally to coordination state that has an ownership or parent-child structure. A client session can create ephemeral znodes, which exist only while that session remains active. Watches notify clients about changes. Znode versions and ACLs support version-aware updates and access control.
Those semantics can be a strong fit when correctness depends on session ownership or when software already uses ZooKeeper paths and client libraries. Higher-level coordination patterns are commonly implemented with Apache Curator recipes rather than assumed to be native ZooKeeper operations.

When etcd3’s API helps
etcd3’s built-in leases, elections, locks, watches, and compare-and-write transactions can make it a more direct fit when a service needs those primitives through the etcd API. Watches can track changes, while revisions give clients a way to relate updates to an ordered history. The available gRPC API and HTTP/JSON gateway may also suit systems already organized around key-value metadata and API-driven control planes.
A watch is a change-delivery mechanism, not a reason to ignore reconnects or recovery. Design clients to handle interruptions and resume or reconcile against stored state according to the API and version they use.

Quorum behavior, performance, and scale
Both systems depend on a functioning quorum for replicated coordination state. ZooKeeper’s default quorum is a majority: a write is committed after acknowledgements from a quorum, and the service requires a majority of servers to remain available. Reads are processed locally, while writes are forwarded through consensus. This is why ZooKeeper can be attractive for read-dominant coordination, but it also means that read freshness and write synchronization have different costs.
etcd stores its data in one Raft replication group. Its ordered metadata model is intended for datasets of up to a few gigabytes, according to the project documentation; it does not horizontally shard data. It is therefore not a substitute for a partitioned analytical or transactional database just because it offers transactions.

There is no current official apples-to-apples ZooKeeper-versus-etcd3 benchmark in the cited project material that establishes a universal speed winner. Performance depends on the workload’s read/write mix, consistency requirements, network, quorum placement, client behavior, and operational configuration. Benchmark the application’s actual access patterns and failure scenarios rather than extrapolating from a general claim about read-heavy workloads.
Which should you choose?
Choose ZooKeeper when
- Your application’s correctness depends on hierarchical paths, ephemeral session ownership, or existing ZooKeeper-specific integrations.
- Your organization already has operational expertise and tooling for ZooKeeper.
- You can account for potentially stale ordinary reads and design around ensemble sizing, majority failure domains, session timeouts, and ACLs.
Choose etcd3 when
- You need linearizable reads, conditional transactions, or revision-based ordering for metadata.
- Leases, elections, locks, watches, or gRPC clients are a natural fit for your service.
- Your data fits a single replication group and your design accounts for quorum loss during failures or maintenance.
For Kubernetes control planes
Kubernetes stores API-server cluster state in etcd and uses its watch API for change propagation. For teams operating a Kubernetes control plane, etcd is therefore the native persistence layer, and experience operating it directly applies to that environment. This does not make etcd a universal replacement for ZooKeeper in applications whose coordination contract is built around ZooKeeper semantics.
