Apache Solr is a Java-based search and analytics server built on Apache Lucene. A Java application can send documents and queries to Solr through SolrJ or Solr’s JSON APIs, while Solr handles indexing, text analysis and retrieval. Building a high-performance system means measuring and tuning the whole search workload—not assuming Solr is fast for every corpus or query.

What Apache Solr does in a Java search system

Solr provides a server around Lucene’s indexing and information-retrieval capabilities. It can work with structured, semi-structured and unstructured data, and offers more than keyword matching: full-text search, facets, highlighting, spellchecking, analytics, geospatial queries, vector search and integrations for extracting text from documents.

In a typical design, the Java application owns domain logic and decides what to index; Solr stores searchable documents and serves queries. The application can communicate with Solr through SolrJ, the Java client library, or directly through Solr’s REST-like JSON APIs. Solr is therefore a search service your application uses, not simply a Java library embedded in the application.

What “high performance” should mean

There is no useful universal speed claim without a corpus, query mix, hardware, concurrency level and measurement method. Apache’s cited materials describe Solr’s architecture and capabilities but provide no comparable benchmark figure for this use case. Set measurable acceptance criteria for your own workload before tuning.

What Java version does Apache Solr require?

Server and client requirements are different. According to the Apache Software Foundation’s current system requirements and Solr 10.0 release notes (2026), Solr 10.x requires Java 21 or higher for the server, while SolrJ client libraries continue to use JDK 17. Solr 9.x is continuously tested against Java 11, 17 and 21. Confirm the system-requirements page for the exact Solr release you plan to deploy, because these requirements can change.

Solr version or component Java compatibility stated by Apache Qualification
Solr 10.x server Java 21 or higher Apache Solr 10.0 release notes and current system requirements (2026).
SolrJ client libraries JDK 17 Applies to the client libraries; it does not lower the server’s Java 21 requirement for Solr 10.x.
Solr 9.x Java 11, 17 and 21 Continuously tested versions, as stated by Apache’s current system requirements.

Apache’s Solr 10.0 release notes also specify Lucene 10.3 and Jetty 12/Jakarta EE 10. Check the release-specific requirements when selecting a runtime, building deployment images or planning an upgrade.

How do I use SolrJ with Java?

Use SolrJ when you want Java-facing client libraries for communicating with Solr. Keep the Solr server and application client as separate deployment concerns: the server runs Solr, and the Java application uses the client to submit updates and searches. Direct JSON requests are another option when using a Java client library is not appropriate.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. Choose compatible versions. Check the Java requirement for the Solr server release and the JDK requirement for the SolrJ library. For Solr 10.x, the server requires Java 21 or higher while SolrJ continues to use JDK 17.
  2. Define the document model. Decide which domain fields need to be searchable, filterable, sortable or displayed. Specify appropriate field types and text analysis in the Solr schema or configuration.
  3. Create a core or collection. Prepare the Solr target for your documents, then load representative records before finalizing field analysis and query behavior.
  4. Connect the application. Use SolrJ or the JSON API to send documents and queries. Configure timeouts and retries for the application’s failure model; make update handling safe to repeat so a retried operation does not create unintended duplicate data.
  5. Build the user-facing query. Combine text matching with the necessary filters, facets, highlighting or other features. Inspect returned documents and relevance behavior against representative searches.
  6. Test at realistic scale. Measure indexing rate and query latency with representative corpus size, query mix and concurrency, then revise the schema, query design or deployment based on results.

SolrJ is not a substitute for operational safeguards: decide how the application handles timeouts, transient failures and repeated updates, and observe those outcomes in production.

How do I build a high-performance search engine with Solr?

1. Design fields and text analysis around the domain

Start with the records users need to find and the ways they will search for them. A field may need to support full-text matching, exact filtering, sorting or display; those are distinct roles to account for in the schema. Configure analysis to fit the text and language in the corpus, then verify its effect with real examples. A schema that makes indexing convenient but does not support the intended queries can undermine relevance and efficiency.

2. Use the right query features

Keep each part of the query intentional. Use text matching for retrieval, filters to constrain the candidate set, facets when users need category counts, and highlighting when result context helps them choose. Spellchecking, geospatial search, analytics and vector search address other specific product needs; enable them because the application requires them, not merely because they are available.

3. Tune ranking against judged results

Build a representative set of queries and decide what a good result looks like for each. Compare returned results and ordering as you change fields, analysis or ranking. Solr’s relevance behavior depends on the corpus and query design, so tune against that evidence rather than treating a configuration as universally optimal. Learning-to-Rank may be appropriate where the application has the data and evaluation process to support it.

4. Measure before and after each change

Establish a baseline for latency percentiles, indexing throughput, concurrency, memory use and relevance. Change one meaningful factor at a time where practical, then repeat tests using the same representative workload. Re-test after schema, analyzer, JVM or cluster changes: each can alter behavior or resource demands.

5. Plan resilience as part of performance

Sharding and replication support distributed capacity and availability in SolrCloud. Decide how much data and query load a deployment must handle, what failures it should tolerate, and how recovery should work. Include backups, monitoring and failure recovery in the design; peak throughput alone does not describe production readiness.

Should I use SolrCloud or a single Solr node?

Option Best fit What to plan for
Single-node or standalone Solr A deployment whose workload and availability needs fit a single node. Capacity limits, backups, monitoring and recovery if the node is unavailable.
SolrCloud A deployment that needs distributed capacity or availability using shards and replicas. Cluster operations, shard and replica planning, monitoring, backups, upgrades and failure recovery.

Neither topology is automatically faster for every workload. Choose based on measured demand, availability requirements and the team’s ability to operate the deployment. Apache identifies the Solr Operator and SolrCloud Helm chart as Kubernetes deployment paths; Kubernetes automation does not remove the need to plan and monitor the Solr cluster.

How do I tune Solr relevance and query latency?

Treat relevance and latency as connected but separate outcomes. A query can become faster while producing worse results, or improve ranking while consuming more resources. Evaluate both when changing the schema, analyzers, queries, caches or ranking.
