1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsApache Doris and ClickHouse are both column-oriented analytical databases, but neither is a universal performance winner. Choose by matching the database’s data models, materialization behavior, deployment options, and operational demands to your query patterns and freshness requirements. A fair comparison requires running the same workload on both.
How Apache Doris and ClickHouse differ
Doris presents an MPP architecture, several table models, MySQL-protocol compatibility, and integrated or decoupled storage-compute deployments. ClickHouse centers on the MergeTree engine family; self-managed deployments can use sharding and replication, while ClickHouse Cloud describes compute servers working with shared object storage. These are meaningful architectural distinctions, not proof that one system is faster for a particular application.
| Area | Apache Doris | ClickHouse |
|---|---|---|
| Core design | MPP analytical database with columnar storage, standard SQL support, and a MySQL-compatible protocol, according to the Doris overview. | Column-oriented analytical database built around the MergeTree engine family, according to ClickHouse features. |
| Data-handling options | Duplicate, Aggregate, and Unique table models support different data-handling patterns; consult the Doris overview for the product’s descriptions. | The reviewed ClickHouse features source identifies MergeTree as central but does not establish an equivalent three-model comparison. |
| Deployment patterns | Integrated Frontend (FE) and Backend (BE) processes, or decoupled compute with shared storage and separate compute groups, as described in the Doris architecture guide. | Self-managed clusters can use sharding and replication. The managed-service architecture described for ClickHouse Cloud has compute servers accessing shared object storage; this is not a description of every ClickHouse deployment. |
| Materialized views | Synchronous views are kept strongly consistent with their base table; asynchronous views refresh according to policy, per the Doris materialized-view guide. | Incremental views transform inserted data; refreshable views recompute on a schedule, per the ClickHouse materialized-view guide. |
Which database should you choose?
Choose Apache Doris when its models and deployment options fit
Doris is worth evaluating when Duplicate, Aggregate, or Unique table models align with how your application stores and changes data, or when its FE/BE design and MySQL-protocol compatibility suit your environment. If independent scaling of compute and storage matters, assess Doris’s decoupled architecture as well as its integrated deployment. The architecture guide says the shared-storage approach enables independent scaling and shared data, while introducing reliance on external shared storage and additional operational complexity.
Doris’s overview advertises query latency of “< 1 second,” second-level ingestion, and “10,000+ QPS.” These are vendor-published capability claims, not guarantees or independently verified comparisons; results depend on workload and setup. See the Doris overview for the claims.

Choose ClickHouse when its engine and operating model fit
Evaluate ClickHouse when its MergeTree family suits your storage and query design, or when you want to operate a self-managed deployment using its documented sharding and replication options. If you are considering ClickHouse Cloud, evaluate that managed service separately: its described shared-object-storage architecture differs from the classic shared-nothing pattern with local storage and explicit sharding. See ClickHouse features and the ClickHouse Cloud architecture material.
Do not choose by a claimed universal speed winner
The available product documentation does not establish an independent, apples-to-apples Doris-versus-ClickHouse performance result. Both may suit analytical workloads, but category-level similarity does not predict which will perform better on your queries. Treat vendor capability claims as claims to test, not as a head-to-head result.

Compare the workloads that matter to your application
Build the evaluation around representative data and queries rather than a single synthetic number. Include the following dimensions:
- Query shape: Measure broad scans and aggregations as well as point-like, high-concurrency queries. Use the actual filters, joins, and group-by operations your application runs.
- Data changes: Record append, update, and deletion rates. Evaluate how each system’s data model handles those changes in practice.
- Freshness: Define how quickly new or changed records must affect query results. A design that is acceptable for scheduled reporting may not meet a near-real-time requirement.
- Concurrency: Test realistic simultaneous query loads and include the latency distribution your users care about, not just an average.
- Lakehouse access and integrations: Verify the specific catalog, file format, connector, and query pattern you need. The reviewed documentation does not settle an exhaustive integration comparison.
Compare materialized views by freshness and update behavior
“Materialized view” does not describe one shared execution model across these systems. The refresh trigger and consistency behavior affect both how fresh results are and what work the system must do.

| System and mode | Documented behavior | Questions for your test |
|---|---|---|
| Doris synchronous view | Kept strongly consistent with the base table, according to the Doris guide. | Does this consistency behavior and the associated query or write path meet your workload’s needs? |
| Doris asynchronous view | Refreshed according to policy, according to the Doris guide. | What refresh interval and lag are acceptable, and how does the view behave as data changes? |
| ClickHouse incremental view | An insert-triggered transformation, according to the ClickHouse guide. | Do inserts cover the transformations you need, and how do updates, deletions, or historical data affect the result? |
| ClickHouse refreshable view | A scheduled recomputation, according to the ClickHouse guide. | Can scheduled recomputation meet the freshness target, and what is its compute cost at your data scale? |
For either product, test refresh timing, historical backfill, updates, and deletions explicitly. The documented modes alone do not determine the practical cost or freshness for your workload.

Apache Doris integrated and decoupled modes
In integrated mode, Doris uses FE and BE processes with storage and compute together. Its decoupled mode separates compute groups from shared storage, enabling independent scaling and shared data according to the architecture guide. That separation also means relying on external shared storage and managing added operational complexity. Compare the modes against your requirements for scaling, availability, storage, and the skills of the team that will run the service.

Self-managed ClickHouse and ClickHouse Cloud
Self-managed ClickHouse deployments can use sharding and replication. ClickHouse Cloud’s described architecture instead has compute servers access shared object storage. Do not assume the managed-service architecture applies to self-managed installations, or that operating one deployment model tells you the operational effort of the other. Evaluate the exact service or configuration you plan to run.

Run a controlled proof of concept
- Fix the test conditions. Use the same dataset, schema intent, query mix, concurrency, and freshness target. For self-managed systems, match hardware and configuration as closely as possible; for managed services, record the service tier and settings used.
- Include real data changes. Replay representative inserts, updates, and deletions alongside reads. Include any materialized-view refresh or backfill work required by the application.
- Measure the outcomes that affect users and operators. Track query latency under load, ingestion behavior, freshness, resource use, and the operational effort needed to meet availability and scaling requirements.
- Repeat and inspect the details. Run tests more than once, investigate outliers, and confirm that each system is doing equivalent work. Document version, configuration, and deployment model so the result is meaningful.
- Decide against requirements, not a single score. A speed result matters only if the tested workload and deployment reflect production; include the operational and data-freshness trade-offs in the decision.
