Apache Directory Studio is a directory-tooling suite for working with LDAP servers. Apache offers it either as a standalone application for macOS, Linux, and Windows or as plugins for Eclipse. Its tools include an LDAP Browser for directory entries, editors for LDIF and schema files, and utilities focused on Apache Directory Server (ApacheDS).
What Apache Directory Studio is
The Apache Directory project describes Directory Studio as an Eclipse RCP directory-tooling platform for LDAP servers, with particular attention to ApacheDS. You can run the standalone application without installing it into Eclipse, or add its plugins to an Eclipse installation. Apache’s overview is at Welcome to Apache Directory Studio.
Its components serve different directory-administration tasks; it is not just a tree viewer. The project describes the LDAP Browser as designed to work with almost any available LDAP server, but that is the project’s stated scope, not an independent compatibility test of every server, version, or configuration.

LDAP Browser
The LDAP Browser displays a directory tree and, according to Apache’s feature description, can create, edit, and remove directory entries. Use it when you need to inspect or manage LDAP data through a graphical client.

LDIF Editor
The LDIF Editor works with LDAP Data Interchange Format files and includes syntax highlighting and content assistance, as described by Apache. It is the relevant component when you need to edit LDIF text rather than browse entries directly on a server.
Schema Editor
The Schema Editor is intended for OpenLDAP-format schema files. Apache says it can edit attribute types and object classes for ApacheDS and OpenLDAP. This is a distinct task from editing directory entries: schema changes define the kinds of attributes and objects a directory can represent.

ApacheDS tools
The suite also names an embedded ApacheDS server, an ApacheDS configuration editor, and an ACI editor. These components make the toolset especially relevant if your work involves ApacheDS configuration or access-control information; they are not substitutes for checking how a specific LDAP server handles a particular configuration.

Apache’s Downloads page is the place to check current artifacts and the applicable prerequisites. Because the plugin route depends on both Java and Eclipse, verify that your installed versions meet the page’s requirements before choosing it. If you do not need integration with Eclipse, the standalone route avoids that particular plugin prerequisite.

Version and documentation to check
The version displayed on Apache’s overview is 2.0.0-M17, a milestone whose announcement is dated July 24, 2021. That identifies what the overview shows; it does not establish that M17 is the latest available build today or that it will work with every current operating system or Eclipse release. Check the official downloads page and project changelog for a current release and compatibility information before installing.
Apache maintains a User’s Guide index, including PDF guides for the LDAP Browser and Schema Editor. Consult the relevant guide for component-specific instructions rather than assuming all tools use the same workflow.
