What AOL announced in December 2003
BetaNews reported on December 5, 2003, that AOL was expanding a beta test of a standalone dialer to include third-party email software. The contemporary report described the capability as Open Mail Access: IMAP4 handled reading messages and SMTP handled sending them. It said POP3-only clients would not work with the new capability. The dialer was expected at the time to ship with the forthcoming Tahiti AOL-client upgrade, then scheduled for early 2004. That was a forecast in the 2003 report, not evidence that the release happened on that schedule.
How the April 2004 announcement differed
On April 20, 2004, Macworld reported a distinct AOL announcement: Open Mail Access would let Mac and PC users check AOL Mail with third-party applications that supported IMAP. The article named Eudora, Entourage, and Apple Mail as examples. Read Macworld’s report.

IMAP’s practical distinction was that messages and folders remained stored on AOL’s servers and synchronized automatically with the client. This differed from a workflow that downloaded messages to one local client. Macworld also reported that AOL’s anti-spam technology operated through its servers, so using a third-party client did not remove AOL Mail and Spam Controls from the mail service.
What the change meant for AOL users
- Client compatibility mattered: the December 2003 report specifically excluded clients that supported only POP3. The April 2004 announcement concerned third-party software supporting IMAP.
- Mail could stay coordinated across clients: with server-side storage and synchronization, message and folder changes could be reflected through the IMAP service rather than being tied only to a single local download.
- Some AOL protections remained server-side: Macworld said AOL’s spam controls continued to apply when users checked mail in another client.
These reports describe the service’s introduction, not a general performance or security ranking of AOL’s own software versus other clients.

Using AOL Mail with a third-party app today
AOL Help currently describes POP or IMAP as methods to sync AOL Mail with a third-party app or download email. Its March 4, 2025 search result also notes that someone who has not recently accessed the account in a browser may need to sign in there before the app works again. The available help information does not establish one authentication or compatibility procedure for every account and app. Consult AOL’s current POP or IMAP help for setup guidance; do not treat the 2003–2004 protocol details as current configuration instructions.
