As of October 9, 2026, the recent announcements from Anthropic, Google DeepMind and Mistral are Claude Haiku 5.5, Gemini 4 Argon and Mistral Large 4. They are not equally documented: Anthropic has shared a short positioning statement, Google’s listing confirms Argon’s name but offers little detail, and Mistral has described a public preview and its intended uses. The announcements do not provide a consistent, independent comparison, so they are best read as three separate product updates—not a ranking.

What’s new?

The announcements surfaced in September and October 2026 differ in detail and availability. The dates and product descriptions below come from each company’s official announcements.

Claude Haiku 5.5 Anthropic newsroom listing, October 7, 2026 Anthropic calls it “Our fastest, cheapest, and most capable small model yet” and says it is designed for high-volume, cost-sensitive work. Not stated in the cited newsroom listing.
Gemini 4 Argon Google DeepMind news page, listed under September 2026 The listing calls it “our next era of frontier intelligence.” No specifications are provided in the available listing. Not stated in the cited listing.

What can each model do?

Claude Haiku 5.5: positioned for high-volume work

Anthropic’s announcement frames Haiku 5.5 as a small model for workloads where cost and volume matter. Its “fastest, cheapest, and most capable” wording is the company’s own characterization; the listing does not supply benchmarks or comparative measurements to verify it independently. Anthropic’s newsroom also lists Sonnet 5.5 and Opus 5.5 announcements from September 28 and 22, respectively. The same listing says Sonnet 5.5 is faster and cheaper than its predecessor and that Opus 5.5 matches Fable 5.1 on most work at lower running cost. Those, too, are company claims, not evidence of a comparison across these three newly announced models.

Ideal for gaming, video editing, and multitasking, it provides expansive and crisp multi-display support.

Gemini 4 Argon: announcement details are sparse

Google DeepMind lists Gemini 4 Argon among its September 2026 model announcements. The listing confirms the model name and uses the phrase “our next era of frontier intelligence,” but the available information does not establish its capabilities, benchmarks, price, or access route. The page also lists Gemini 3.8 Live, Gemini 3.8 Flash and Gemini 3.8 Flash Cyber; details about those models should not be assumed to apply to Argon.

Mistral Large 4: multimodal model in public preview

Mistral reports that Large 4 has 1 trillion parameters and 49 billion active parameters. These are publisher-reported specifications, not independently verified figures in the cited announcement. Mistral says the natively multimodal model is aimed at coding, agentic workflows and multimodal understanding. It also claims competitiveness with leading open-source models and state-of-the-art performance among open models in some enterprise workloads. The announcement does not provide an independent head-to-head test establishing those claims.

How can you try them?

Mistral Large 4

Mistral said the public preview was available through API access in Mistral Studio. Its October 6 announcement also said model weights were planned for release by the end of October 2026. As of October 9, that was a future plan, not an available download.

Claude Haiku 5.5 and Gemini 4 Argon

The cited Anthropic and Google DeepMind listings do not state how to access these models. They do not establish whether access is through a consumer app, an API, a preview program or downloadable weights. Check the companies’ official announcement pages for current availability rather than inferring access from another model in the same product family.

How do the models compare?

There is not enough common evidence here to declare a winner. The announcements do not establish a consistent set of independent benchmark results, comparable prices or latency measurements across all three. They also do not provide enough detail to compare deployment requirements or privacy and operational controls.

For a practical evaluation, first verify that each model is accessible to you, then test the same representative tasks using the same inputs and success criteria. Compare:

  • Task fit: whether the model handles your actual coding, agentic or multimodal workload.
  • Cost and speed: the price and latency for comparable requests under your expected usage.
  • Access and deployment: whether you can use an API, an app or downloadable weights, and what operating requirements apply.
  • Quality: results on your own tasks or a relevant independent benchmark, rather than an unqualified vendor claim.

Until those details are available on comparable terms, the clearest distinction is the one each announcement supports: Anthropic positions Haiku 5.5 for high-volume, cost-sensitive work; Google confirms the Argon listing but provides little technical detail; Mistral offers Large 4 in an API preview and describes its intended workloads.
