Angular’s NG8102 warning means the value before ?? is typed as non-nullable, so the fallback cannot be reached according to its declared type. Fix it by either declaring the value nullable when absence is genuinely possible, or removing the unnecessary fallback when the value is guaranteed to exist.
What NG8102 means
NG8102, named nullishCoalescingNotNullable, flags a nullish-coalescing expression in an Angular template when the expression on the left is not typed to include null or undefined. For example, if a component declares username: string, then username ?? 'root' has an unreachable fallback under that type.
The warning points to a mismatch between the template and the type declaration; it does not prove which one is wrong. Angular documents the diagnostic at NG8102: Nullish coalescing not nullable.

Why the diagnostic appears—or does not
NG8102 requires both Angular’s strictTemplates and TypeScript’s strictNullChecks to be enabled. Angular extended diagnostics require strict template checking generally, and this check specifically depends on strict null checking. If either prerequisite is off, the diagnostic will not be emitted.
#1 Best Overall
Extended diagnostics are warnings by default. In tsconfig.json, the check can be set to warning, error, or suppress under angularCompilerOptions.extendedDiagnostics.checks. Angular may add or enable extended diagnostics in minor releases, so review the current extended diagnostics overview when updating versions or compiler policy.
Choose the fix that matches the value
If the value can be absent
Include the real nullish possibility in its type and keep the fallback if that is the intended display behavior:

username: string | null = null;
Then username ?? 'root' represents a possible runtime case. Use this approach for genuinely optional data, such as a field that may be missing from application state or an API response; do not add nullability solely to silence the warning.
If the value is guaranteed to exist
Remove ?? and the fallback. For a value declared as username: string, use {{ username }} in the template rather than {{ username ?? 'root' }}. This keeps the template aligned with the guarantee expressed by the type.

How to configure or suppress NG8102
Configuration changes the diagnostic’s visibility or severity, not the runtime meaning of the expression or the accuracy of its type.
{
"angularCompilerOptions": {
"extendedDiagnostics": {
"checks": {
"nullishCoalescingNotNullable": "suppress"
}
}
}
}
Use warning to retain the default warning behavior or error to fail compilation for the check; use suppress only when the project deliberately does not want this feedback. Correcting the type or expression is preferable when the warning reveals a genuine mismatch.

Related warning: NG8107
NG8107 covers optional chaining (?.) when its left-hand value is non-nullable. NG8102 concerns the nullish fallback operator (??). For either warning, check whether the declared type accurately represents possible absence before removing the operator. Angular’s NG8107 documentation describes the related check. Angular template expressions support nullish coalescing, and their effective types depend on the component members and template locals in scope; see the template expression syntax guide.
