INITIAL_CONFIG is Angular’s dependency-injection token for supplying the initial configuration of the server platform. Its PlatformConfig value can provide an initial document and the current application URL; Angular can create a DOM with Domino if you do not supply a document. The token is a lower-level platform configuration option, distinct from the higher-level SSR setup described in Angular’s current rendering guides.
What is INITIAL_CONFIG in Angular?
INITIAL_CONFIG is an InjectionToken<PlatformConfig> exported by @angular/platform-server. Angular describes it as “The DI token for setting the initial config for the platform.” It configures the server platform when the application is initialized. See the Angular INITIAL_CONFIG API reference.
The configuration interface has two optional properties: document and url. Their purpose is different: one supplies the starting DOM, while the other supplies the URL that represents the current application state.
What can PlatformConfig contain?

These properties and their documented behavior are described in Angular’s PlatformConfig API reference. In the platform-server implementation, a configured document string is parsed, and Angular can resolve it against the configured URL. The implementation is visible in the Angular platform-server source.

How to provide INITIAL_CONFIG
When using an API or integration that creates the server platform and expects INITIAL_CONFIG, provide an object with the configuration values you need. For example, the token’s value has this general shape:

Supply the object through the dependency-injection setup used by the specific server-platform API in your Angular version. If no custom initial HTML is needed, omit document; if the server location should not be initialized from a supplied URL, omit url.

For current Angular applications, first follow the version’s SSR setup rather than copying an older Angular Universal bootstrap recipe. Angular’s current SSR guide describes server-side rendering, prerendering, and client rendering as rendering choices and covers setup with APIs such as provideServerRendering. When do you need to set document or url?
Set document when the server needs specific starting HTML
Pass document if the server bootstrap must begin with a particular DOM. Otherwise, Angular’s documented default is to create a DOM using Domino. The supplied document is input to server initialization; it is not itself the rendered response guarantee.

Set url when server-side location must match the application state
Pass url when initialization should establish the server platform’s location using a specific URL. Because that location includes protocol, hostname, and port, use the intended full URL where those details matter rather than assuming a path alone expresses the complete location.
Leave optional values out when defaults are appropriate
PlatformConfig makes both properties optional. Do not add a custom document or URL solely because the token exists; provide only the values your server initialization requires.

INITIAL_CONFIG and modern Angular SSR APIs
Angular’s current SSR documentation presents rendering as a broader application setup, with server rendering, prerendering, and client rendering available as approaches. provideServerRendering belongs to that higher-level configuration surface. INITIAL_CONFIG addresses the narrower task of supplying initial platform values, especially the document and URL. Choose the setup documented for the Angular version in the application, and use this token only where the server-platform integration requires or supports it.
