The main Angular CLI configuration file is angular.json, located at the top level of an Angular workspace. It sets workspace and project defaults for tasks such as building, serving, and testing an app. Edit it directly or use ng config to read or change a JSON-path value.
Where is the Angular configuration file?
Look for angular.json in the workspace root—the directory from which you typically run Angular CLI commands. Angular describes it as the workspace’s single CLI configuration file at the top level (Angular CLI ng config reference). Paths recorded in the file are interpreted relative to that workspace root.
A workspace can contain one application or multiple applications and libraries. The names under projects are logical project identifiers and do not always correspond directly to top-level folder names.
What is angular.json used for?
The file supplies defaults to Angular CLI tools. Its workspace-level properties apply broadly, while entries under projects configure individual applications or libraries. Project settings can override workspace defaults, and options passed on a command line can override project defaults. The exact available properties depend on the Angular version and builder in use; consult the workspace configuration reference for the project’s version.

Workspace-level settings
Common top-level properties include version, newProjectRoot, cli, schematics, and projects. The cli section can configure CLI behavior, including settings for analytics, cache, package manager, schematic collections, and warnings.
Project settings and targets
A project entry can describe its root, whether it is an application or library, its source root, selector prefix, internationalization settings, schematics, and CLI targets. Targets—traditionally grouped under architect—connect commands to builders. A target identifies a builder and may define default options plus named configurations. Typical tasks include build, serve, test, linting, end-to-end testing, and internationalization extraction; custom targets can be run with ng run. See Angular’s builder documentation for target and builder details.

Build options can configure assets, styles, and scripts. Styles and scripts may be specified as file paths or as objects with details such as an entry point, bundle name, and whether the bundle is injected. Do not assume an option from another Angular release is accepted: check the schema for the builder and version used by your project. Property names inside the JSON file use camelCase.
How do you read or change an Angular CLI setting?
You can edit angular.json in a code editor, or use ng config. Its documented form is ng config [json-path] [value] [options]: omit the value to read a setting, or provide a value to update it.

- Open a terminal at the workspace root. This ensures the command addresses the intended workspace.
- Read a value: run
ng config projects.my-app.architect.build.options.outputPath, replacing the path with the property you want to inspect. The command prints the configured value if that JSON path exists. - Set a value: run
ng config projects.my-app.architect.build.options.outputPath dist/custom, substituting the correct project, target, property, and value for your workspace. Review the resulting change inangular.json.
These are illustrative JSON paths, not universal project names or required defaults. Check the actual keys in your file and the relevant builder schema. The --global option addresses CLI configuration in the caller’s home directory rather than the workspace file. CLI flags may use dash-case even though JSON property names use camelCase. Refer to the command reference and the CLI reference for details supported by your installed Angular CLI.
How do named configurations and environment files work?
A target can define named configurations for alternate settings, commonly development and production, with additional names such as staging when needed. Choose one with --configuration, for example ng build --configuration production. Multiple configuration names can be comma-separated; if they set the same property, the later configuration applied wins. Command-line options can in turn override configured defaults. Angular’s build guide explains build configuration selection.

For build-time file substitution, put fileReplacements in the relevant target configuration. Angular states that no files are replaced by default; ng generate environments can set up an environment configuration. The selected build configuration then substitutes the specified file—for example, a development-specific environment file. This is a build-time mechanism, not a runtime setting switch. Generated layouts and environment-file guidance can vary by Angular version, so follow the documentation matching the project (Angular environments guide).
How is angular.json different from other configuration files?
| File | Main purpose |
|---|---|
angular.json |
Angular CLI workspace, project, and target configuration, including build, serve, and test settings. |
tsconfig.json and project-specific TypeScript configuration files |
Base TypeScript compiler settings and project-level settings that may inherit from the base file. |
package.json |
Project dependencies and package metadata. |
package-lock.json |
Records the installed package versions for npm. |
These files serve different purposes; changing a TypeScript compiler option, for example, usually belongs in a TypeScript configuration file rather than in angular.json. Angular’s workspace file-structure reference describes the roles of these files.

What to check when a configuration change does not work
- Confirm the file and workspace. Make sure you edited the root
angular.jsonfor the workspace where the command runs, not a different project or a global CLI setting. - Check the target and project name. A valid setting under one project or target does not automatically apply to another.
- Check which value takes precedence. A project setting may override a workspace default; a selected named configuration may change target options; and a command-line option may override configured values.
- Validate the option against the installed builder. Option names and accepted values can differ across Angular versions and builders. Use the documentation and schema for the project’s installed version.
- Check path interpretation. Paths in
angular.jsonare relative to the workspace root, so confirm the referenced file or directory is located where the setting expects it. - Keep configuration types distinct. If the issue concerns TypeScript compilation, package installation, or lockfile consistency, inspect the corresponding TypeScript or package file instead.
