Angular resources connect changing signal state to asynchronous work: reactive parameters decide what to load, a loader or stream performs the work, and resource signals expose its value and status. Use resource() for general one-result async work, httpResource for reactive HTTP reads that should use Angular’s HTTP stack, and rxResource() when the source is an Observable. Resources are designed for reads, not mutations.

What Angular resources do

Angular’s signal and computed APIs are synchronous, while applications often need data that arrives asynchronously. A resource gives that work a signal-based interface: its parameters react to signal changes, its asynchronous operation produces a value, and its signals make the value and lifecycle state available to the UI. Server data fetching is a common use, but resources can represent other asynchronous operations as well. Angular’s resource guide describes the core model.

Think of the flow as reactive params → async operation → resource state and value. For example, a selected user ID can determine which user record the application requests. When that ID changes, the resource can cancel the outstanding read and start the replacement operation.

Choose the API that matches the work

Need API Why
General promise-based or one-result asynchronous work resource() Reactive parameters and an async loader expose the result through resource signals. Angular resource guide.
HTTP reads using Angular HTTP features httpResource Reactive wrapper over HttpClient, with interceptors and HTTP testing support. It starts requests eagerly, unlike an HttpClient Observable, which starts on subscription. Angular httpResource guide.
An Observable source or existing RxJS pipeline rxResource() Its stream function returns an Observable and can use reactive parameters. Angular RxResourceOptions API.
Ongoing values, such as WebSocket, SSE, or Firestore snapshot updates A resource streaming API or Observable-backed rxResource() A regular loader is for a one-time async result; streaming supports ongoing updates. See Angular’s resource guide.
A write or mutation HttpClient or another mutation-specific API Resources can cancel in-flight work when parameters change or the resource is destroyed; Angular advises against using them for mutations. Angular httpResource guide.

The current Angular httpResource API reference labels httpResource stable since v22.0. The official v22 stability labels for resource() and rxResource() are not established here; check the API reference matching the Angular version installed in your project before relying on a stability label or version-specific signature. The opened httpResource guide identified itself as v22.0.0-next.11, so its API details are release-sensitive.

  • 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.

Build a resource from reactive parameters

The params function tracks any signals it reads, much like a computed signal. When its result changes, Angular invokes the loader again. The loader receives the parameters, the previous status, and an AbortSignal.

const userResource = resource({
  params: () => ({ id: userId() }),
  loader: ({ params, abortSignal }) =>
    fetch(`/api/users/${params.id}`, { signal: abortSignal }).then(r => r.json()),
});

This illustrates the documented API shape; adapt the URL, response typing, and error handling to your application. The loader’s abortSignal is passed to fetch so the request can be cancelled when it becomes obsolete. See Angular’s resource guide.

Skip loading until required inputs exist

If a required signal does not yet have a value, make params return undefined. The loader will not run and the resource is idle. Do not return a defined wrapper such as { id: undefined } when the intention is to skip the request: the params result is still defined. Angular documents this idle behavior.

Handle loading, errors, and values safely

Resources expose value, hasValue, error, isLoading, and status; calling reload() runs the work again. Angular documents these statuses:

  • idle: no valid request exists and the loader has not run.
  • loading: the initial load is in progress.
  • reloading: a reload is in progress while the previous value remains available.
  • resolved: the resource has resolved successfully.
  • error: the operation failed.
  • local: the resource value was set locally.

Check hasValue() before reading value(). It verifies that a value exists and narrows away undefined; importantly, reading value() in the error state throws at runtime. Use the status and error signals to choose loading, success, and error UI rather than assuming every read has succeeded. Resource states and value behavior are documented by Angular.

Use httpResource for reactive HTTP reads

httpResource is useful when a request depends on changing signals but should still go through Angular’s HttpClient infrastructure, including interceptors and testing support. Unlike a typical HttpClient Observable, it is eager: creating or updating the resource starts the request rather than waiting for a subscription. If one of its signal dependencies changes during a pending request, the old request is cancelled before its replacement is sent. Angular’s guide explains this behavior.

Choose the response format

JSON is the default response format. The resource also provides .text(), .blob(), and .arrayBuffer() variants for other common response types. A parse option can validate or transform the response; the parser’s output determines the resource value type. Angular’s guide demonstrates Zod and notes that libraries such as Valibot can also be used. See the httpResource guide for response parsing details.

Let the resource manage read cancellation—not writes

When parameters change during loading, Angular aborts the outstanding operation. For cancellable work such as fetch, pass the loader’s AbortSignal through to the operation. This is a good fit for reads tied to current UI state: a response for a previously selected user need not finish after the selection changes.

Do not use resource() or httpResource for POST, PUT, or other mutations. Cancellation caused by changed parameters or resource destruction can leave a write incomplete. Use HttpClient directly or another API intended for mutations. Angular explicitly cautions against resource-based mutations in its resource and httpResource guides.

Transfer resolved data during server rendering

During server-side rendering, a resource loader runs to produce the rendered HTML; without transfer state, the browser normally runs the loader again during hydration. Supply a unique, identical server-and-client resource id to let Angular transfer the resolved value through TransferState and initialize the browser resource as resolved. Do not use this approach for user-specific values if rendered HTML could be shared or cached: the serialized value is included in the page HTML. Angular documents the resource ID and SSR warning.

Connect resources to route data

Angular Router’s resources route configuration accepts a Resource implementation, including resource(), rxResource(), or a custom resource. The route guide describes concurrent execution across matched routes and non-blocking route activation; a resource can also be reloaded without navigating again. For an Observable-backed rxResource, use its stream function rather than a promise-style loader. See Angular’s route data-fetching guide and the RxResourceOptions API.

Test httpResource requests

Angular tests httpResource through the same testing APIs used for HttpClient. The documented setup uses provideHttpClientTesting and HttpTestingController; after flushing the request, wait for the resource value to propagate before asserting it. Follow the setup and example in Angular’s httpResource testing guide.

When one httpResource triggers another

A question in Angular issue #68808, opened May 20, 2026, asks: “How to test an httpResource triggering an httpResource?” The issue author specifically asks how to control when individual resources load and wait for them one by one. This is a useful reminder to model each dependent request’s trigger and completion explicitly in a test, using Angular’s HTTP testing controller and resource state rather than assuming that flushing the first request means every downstream resource has already settled.
