There is no comparable rating or test data here to establish the five highest-rated Android TV boxes. Instead, these five devices stand out for different documented feature sets: Google TV Streamer for smart-home integration, NVIDIA SHIELD TV Pro for gaming and expansion, Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) for compact 4K streaming, Homatics Box R 4K Plus for networking and format support, and Chromecast with Google TV as a legacy option to verify before buying. Their specifications are manufacturer-published, not independent performance results.
What should you look for in an Android TV box?
Start with the services you use, your television’s capabilities, and how you connect to your home network and local media. “Android TV” and “Google TV” are not interchangeable product names: Google calls its current device Google TV Streamer while listing Android TV OS; Xiaomi calls its interface Google TV; NVIDIA describes SHIELD as powered by Android TV. Check that the device and the streaming services you need are available in your country.
- Resolution and HDR: Match the box’s output and supported formats to your TV and content. A 4K or Dolby Vision claim cannot make an incompatible television display those formats.
- Memory and storage: RAM and built-in storage matter if you expect to install many apps or games. Published storage capacity is not the same as free space after system software and apps.
- Network and ports: Compare Wi-Fi generation, Ethernet, USB ports, and any expansion options with your router and local-media setup.
- Audio: Check the listed formats and passthrough support, then confirm that your TV, receiver, and app support the same formats.
- Setup requirements: Check what the package includes and which cables or accessories you need before ordering.

Which one should you choose?
- Choose Google TV Streamer if you want Google’s current box, its listed Matter and Thread functions, Gigabit Ethernet, and more built-in memory and storage than Chromecast with Google TV.
- Choose SHIELD TV Pro if USB expansion, local or network storage, and the documented GeForce NOW setup are priorities.
- Consider Xiaomi TV Box S (3rd Gen) if its published 4K and HDR support fits your setup and you value a listed HDMI cable in the package; check your region’s package contents.
- Consider Homatics Box R 4K Plus if Wi-Fi 6 and Gigabit Ethernet are important, while verifying support for your specific apps and services.
- Consider Chromecast with Google TV only after checking stock and generation, since Google’s comparison does not establish current retail availability.
What should you confirm before buying?
- Check country and service support. Confirm the exact model and that the apps and streaming services you use are available for it in your region.
- Match the box to your television and audio chain. Verify resolution, HDR formats, and audio formats across the box, TV, receiver, and the services you use.
- Check the connection you will actually use. If you need wired networking or external media, confirm Ethernet and USB availability rather than assuming all boxes offer them.
- Confirm cable and accessory requirements. Google requires a separately sold certified HDMI 2.1 cable for Streamer; NVIDIA’s setup guide specifies a high-speed HDMI 2.0 cable for SHIELD. Xiaomi’s listed package includes an HDMI cable, but local package contents may differ.
- Verify the exact listing. Check model generation, current price, stock, software status, and included items with the regional manufacturer or retailer listing before purchase.
