Android Bluetooth trackers can help you find lost belongings, but their usefulness depends on how many nearby phones detect and report a tag. In a small 2025 study comparing two routes, Apple’s Find My network produced five to six times as many location reports as Google’s Find My Device network—now called Find Hub—and its reported locations were more accurate. Google’s reports arrived sooner. The study is evidence of a measured gap in that test, not proof that every Android tracker performs worse everywhere.
Why an Android tracker can stop updating
A Bluetooth tag does not normally send its location to the internet by itself. Instead, a compatible phone that passes within Bluetooth range can detect the tag and relay its location through the phone’s finding network. If few participating phones are nearby—or they do not report the tag—the location may be stale or missing.
Google calls its crowdsourced Android network Find Hub. Apple’s Find My network also relies on nearby Apple devices; Apple describes it as including “hundreds of millions of Apple devices around the world,” a company-provided figure rather than an independent device count. Apple Developer: Find My

That makes network coverage a key part of a tracker’s performance, alongside the tag itself. A large number of Android phones in a market does not automatically mean that more phones will report a particular tag: participation settings, adoption, and implementation also matter.

What the 2025 comparison found
A peer-reviewed 2025 study evaluated Google’s Find My Device network (now Find Hub) and Apple Find My on two routes. The authors described the evaluation as small-scale and said Apple delivered five to six times more locations across the routes, with consistently more accurate locations. Google, however, delivered newer locations faster. Proceedings on Privacy Enhancing Technologies: “Okay Google, Where’s My Tracker? Security, Privacy, and Performance Evaluation of Google’s Find My Device Network”
Walking-route results
On the study’s walking route, researchers recorded these results. They apply to that route and test setup, not to every city, country, phone, or tracker.

- 📢 Loud Alert Sound – Built-in speaker with up to 85dB for quick locating

| Measure | Google Find My Device (now Find Hub) | Apple Find My |
|---|---|---|
| Location reports recorded | 242 | 1,218 |
| Median actual accuracy | 49.08 m | 33.13 m |
| Average time from location to retrieval | 78.05 seconds | 1,244.05 seconds |
The report count and accuracy favor Apple in this route; the retrieval-delay measure favors Google. The paper discusses possible influences including query behavior, rate limiting, throttling, and observed Android devices where network participation was not enabled. It does not establish one cause for the gap or show that the same results hold across present-day environments.
Is Google Find Hub as good as Apple Find My?
The available head-to-head evidence points to an Apple advantage in report volume and accuracy under the study conditions, and a Google advantage in how quickly a location was retrieved. It does not support a blanket claim that Android trackers do not work, or a universal five-to-six-times performance ratio. There is no established universal accuracy statistic or independently verified global head-to-head device count in the cited evidence.

Privacy and safety protections are separate from these performance measures. Google says Find Hub uses end-to-end encrypted location information, and Apple describes encryption in its Find My network documentation. Those descriptions explain design claims, not a direct comparison of privacy outcomes. Google Android Help: Find, secure, or erase a lost Android device
How to check Android’s offline-finding setting

- Open Settings.
- Tap Google, then All Services.
- Tap Find Hub, then Find your offline devices.
- Choose Without network, With network in busy places only, or With network everywhere.
Google says a screen lock—PIN, pattern, or password—is required for network finding of offline devices. Its guidance says the device participates by default under the described configuration and that location information is end-to-end encrypted. The “With network everywhere” option can help with finding in busy and remote areas, subject to account and device setup. If the menu is different, search Settings for “Find Hub.”

Can Android detect an AirTag?
Yes. Google says unknown-tracker alerts are available on Android 6.0 and later for Find Hub-compatible tags, headphones, and Apple AirTags. These alerts can notify you when another person’s tracker is separated from its owner and moving with you; Google also provides steps to inspect an alert and locate a nearby tracker. Google Android Help: Find unknown trackers
That safety feature does not turn an AirTag into a Find Hub tracker or let an Android user use Apple’s Find My network to locate their own AirTag. Apple reported that its cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts, implemented under an industry specification, arrived in iOS 17.5 and Android 6.0 or later in May 2024. Shared alerts are about detecting unwanted tracking—not sharing the two companies’ item-finding networks. Apple Newsroom: Cross-platform unwanted-tracking alerts
