You generally can’t—and shouldn’t try to—bypass Android mobile device management. The right way to remove it depends on whether your phone has a work profile or is fully managed by an organization. If the phone is fully managed, or management returns after a reset, contact the organization that enrolled it and request an authorized release.

First identify which kind of Android management is on the phone

Android uses a device policy controller (DPC) app to apply management policies. An enterprise mobility management (EMM) provider typically supplies the DPC on the phone and a cloud console for administrators. Android distinguishes between a work profile and fully managed, or device-owner, mode; they have different scopes and removal routes. Android’s device management overview describes these enrollment types.

Enrollment Typical ownership What is managed Who can authorize removal
Work profile May be on a personal or organization-owned device Work apps and data in the profile, with limited device-wide policy exceptions The organization’s administrator can remove the profile
Fully managed (device owner) Intended for an organization-owned device The organization can manage the entire device Contact the organization that enrolled or owns the device

Google’s Android Open Source Project says fully managed device management “can be used only on organization-owned (company-owned) devices that are used for work.” The fully managed device documentation explains this mode. Work profiles, by contrast, keep work apps and information separate from a user’s primary profile, although some policies can affect the device more broadly. See Android’s work-profile documentation.

How do I remove a work profile from my personal Android phone?

First check whether the profile is merely paused. Android lets users turn a work profile off or on from Settings or Quick Settings; pausing it stops work apps and notifications but does not remove enrollment or delete the profile.

  • Camera: 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 50 MP, f/1.8, (wide), 1/2.76", 0.64µm, AF | 2 MP, f/2.4, (macro). Battery: 5000 mAh, non-removable | A power adapter is NOT included.
  1. To pause it: Open Quick Settings and tap the Work profile tile. If the tile is not visible, edit Quick Settings to add it. Settings labels and placement vary by Android version and manufacturer.
  2. To remove enrollment: Contact your organization’s IT administrator and ask them to remove the work profile or end enrollment. If the device offers a user-facing removal option, follow the organization’s instructions; a managed policy may prevent self-removal.

Removing a work profile deletes the work apps and data in that profile, not the user’s primary-profile data, according to Google’s Android Enterprise Security Paper (2020). The administrator can also direct the policy client to remove the profile. The exact controls can vary by Android version, device maker, and EMM configuration.

What if the phone is fully managed or you bought it second-hand?

Ask the company, school, or other organization responsible for the enrollment to release the device from management. If you bought it used, contact the seller and ask them to arrange release with the enrolling organization. A reset is not a substitute for that authorization: device-owner enrollment is an organizational setup, and management can return during setup if the device remains assigned to the organization.

Will a factory reset remove Android device management?

No—not reliably. A factory reset erases local data, but it does not guarantee that the device is released from organizational enrollment. Depending on the enrollment and configuration, management may be required again during setup. Factory Reset Protection can also require the previously associated credentials or administrator involvement. Android’s device provisioning documentation describes setup and reset constraints; the Android Enterprise Security Paper describes Factory Reset Protection as a way to help ensure IT retains control of setup after a reset.

  • Do not reset a managed phone until you understand the consequences: local data may be erased, and you may be unable to complete setup afterward.
  • If a reset has already happened and management reappears, contact the enrolling organization or seller for release instructions.
  • Back up personal data before any authorized reset, and follow the administrator’s process.

Why bypass attempts are the wrong fix

Bypassing or disabling a DPC can violate an organization’s policies, leave work data or the device in an unsupported state, or fail when enrollment is enforced again. It also does not establish that you are authorized to remove management from a company- or school-owned phone. Use the administrator or seller as the route to release, rather than relying on reset or unofficial removal tools.
