If your Android keyboard is missing, frozen, lagging, typing the wrong characters, or failing only during voice input, the right fix depends on the symptom. Start by restarting your phone and updating the keyboard app. Then follow the relevant steps below; menu names vary by Android version and manufacturer, so search Settings for “keyboard” or “on-screen keyboard” if a path differs.
First, identify what is failing
- No keyboard appears, or the wrong one opens: check which keyboard is selected and enabled.
- The keyboard appears but freezes or will not respond: restart and update first, then try app-specific fixes.
- Typing is slow or taps enter the wrong characters: check Gboard cache, personalization, and active languages.
- Only voice typing fails: check microphone permission and Gboard’s Voice typing setting.
- The problem happens in one app only: test typing in another app. If the keyboard works elsewhere, the issue may be limited to the original app; update or restart that app before changing keyboard settings.
If the keyboard is missing or the wrong one appears
Tap a text-entry field and use the keyboard switcher to choose the keyboard you want. If Gboard is not offered, it may have been disabled or removed from the active keyboard list after an update. Open the phone’s on-screen keyboard settings and enable it. Search Settings for “keyboard” if the names or path differ.
On Motorola phones, enabled keyboards can be selected in Settings and switched while typing; other Android manufacturers use different labels and layouts. See Motorola’s keyboard selection instructions for its device-specific guidance.
If Gboard crashes, freezes, or stops responding
- Restart the phone. This is a low-risk first check recommended by Google.
- Update Gboard. Install any available app update, then test typing again.
- Clear Gboard’s cache. In Settings, open Apps, select Gboard, then look under Storage for Clear cache. The exact labels vary by device.
- Force stop and reopen Gboard. Find Gboard in the Apps list, choose Force stop, then tap a text field to launch it again.
- Clear Gboard data or storage only if needed. Google says, “This resets Gboard to its default state.” Your Gboard settings will be reset. Follow Google’s Gboard troubleshooting steps for its current directions.
- Consider reinstalling Gboard. If it is your only keyboard, install or enable a second keyboard before removing it so you can still enter text. If the problem began immediately after an update, Google also documents uninstalling Gboard updates as a possible rollback.
If typing is laggy or keys enter the wrong characters
For Gboard, start with the restart, update, and cache steps above. If the lag continues, Google suggests turning off personalization and reducing the number of active languages to one or two. If necessary, clearing Gboard data is another option, but it resets the keyboard’s settings. These are Gboard-specific recommendations, not guaranteed fixes for every Android keyboard.

If voice typing is the only problem
- Check microphone permission. In Settings, open Apps, select Gboard, and make sure microphone access is allowed.
- Make sure Voice typing is enabled. Open Gboard settings and check the Voice typing option.
- Check language matching for advanced voice typing. Google says the primary Gboard language and the device language must match for this feature.
- If this is a newly set up Pixel phone, follow Google’s additional connectivity and update checks in its Gboard troubleshooting guide.
For a Samsung Galaxy keyboard problem
Samsung’s guidance applies to Galaxy devices, not every Android phone. Its support article was last updated June 14, 2026, and recommends checking these device-specific possibilities:
- Switch temporarily to Samsung Keyboard if a third-party keyboard may be unstable.
- Restart the device, install available system software updates, and clear Samsung Keyboard’s cache.
- Use Safe Mode to check whether a third-party app is causing the problem.
- Check available storage. Temporarily test with accessibility features such as Screen Reader or Voice Access disabled if they are enabled.
- If the keyboard is visible but taps do not register, inspect the screen for physical obstruction.
See Samsung Gulf’s Galaxy keyboard troubleshooting guide for its device-specific instructions. Samsung lists factory reset only as a last resort and advises backing up data first; do not use it as an early keyboard fix.

If the problem persists
If the keyboard fails across several apps after the relevant app and system updates, use your device manufacturer’s support guidance for the exact settings path and model. If it fails in just one app, focus on that app instead. On a Galaxy device, Samsung’s support page provides contact and service-center options; seek device support if the screen is obstructed or may be damaged.
