If your Android hotspot is not working, first confirm that the phone itself has cellular data and signal. Then check the hotspot switch, reconnect from the other device, and verify carrier tethering support. The steps below help separate a phone connection problem from a Wi-Fi discovery issue, an automatic shutdown, or a plan restriction. Android menus and features vary by phone model and software version.
1. Check that the phone has mobile data and signal
A phone hotspot shares the phone’s mobile data connection. If the host phone cannot reach the internet over cellular data, connected devices will not get internet through the hotspot.
- Temporarily turn off Wi-Fi on the phone.
- Check that mobile data is enabled and the phone has cellular signal.
- Try opening a webpage or another online service on the phone.
If the phone cannot get online, troubleshoot its cellular connection first. Check airplane mode, signal, SIM service, and whether the carrier has an outage. Changing the hotspot’s Wi-Fi settings will not restore a missing cellular connection. Google’s Pixel connectivity guidance covers mobile-data checks.
2. Confirm the hotspot is on, then restart it
On a Pixel, open Settings > Network & internet > Hotspot & tethering > Wi-Fi hotspot. If the hotspot is already on, switch it off and back on. Google recommends this as an initial check. Other Android phones may use different menu names or locations, so look under network, connections, or tethering settings if the path does not match.

3. Reconnect from the other device
On the laptop, tablet, or other device that needs internet, open its Wi-Fi list and select the phone’s current hotspot name. Enter the current hotspot password; an old saved password may no longer work if it was changed. Google’s Android tethering instructions describe connecting a device to a Wi-Fi hotspot.
4. If the hotspot is not showing up
Check whether the network is hidden
Some phones let you hide the hotspot from nearby Wi-Fi lists. If that option is on, the other device may need to connect by entering the network details manually. Check the hotspot’s visibility or hidden-network setting.

Try a compatible band
Band options differ by model. In its Galaxy Z Fold6 manual, Samsung advises setting the hotspot band to 2.4 GHz and turning off Hidden network under Advanced when the hotspot cannot be found. These are model-specific instructions, not universal Android settings. Consult your phone’s guide for its available options. Samsung Galaxy Z Fold6 manual (EU English)

5. Check carrier and plan support
Hotspot availability depends on the mobile carrier and plan as well as the phone’s settings. Google warns that some carriers limit tethering or charge extra, and its Pixel guidance says not all mobile providers work with mobile hotspots. Ask your carrier whether your specific phone and plan are eligible and whether a usage limit, extra charge, or service issue applies. A Wi-Fi setting cannot bypass a carrier restriction. 6. If the hotspot keeps turning off
Google says a Pixel hotspot automatically turns off after 10 minutes with no connected devices. This is documented Pixel behavior, not a universal Android timer. Reconnect a device and check your phone’s hotspot settings or manual for model-specific timeout controls. Google Pixel hotspot troubleshooting
7. Check phone-specific Wi-Fi limits and Data Saver
Some phones cannot keep Wi-Fi and a Wi-Fi hotspot active at the same time. Google’s Pixel guidance names the Pixel 7a as an example: on that device, Wi-Fi turns off when the hotspot is on. If this happens, the phone may be sharing cellular data rather than its Wi-Fi connection; behavior depends on the model.

| Method | Connection | Compatibility notes |
|---|---|---|
| Wi-Fi | Connect the other device to the phone’s hotspot in its Wi-Fi settings. | The phone and client must support the needed Wi-Fi connection; carrier tethering terms still apply. |
| Bluetooth | Pair the devices, then enable Bluetooth tethering in the phone’s tethering settings. | Both devices must support Bluetooth tethering. Computer-specific requirements vary. |
| USB | Connect the phone to the other device with a USB cable, then enable USB tethering. | Use a cable that supports data, not just charging, and check connector and host compatibility. Google says Mac computers cannot use Android USB tethering. |
For USB tethering, use a compatible data-capable cable and confirm the connectors fit both devices. It will not help if the phone has no cellular internet or the carrier plan does not permit tethering. Google’s Pixel tethering instructions
9. Check limits before connecting many devices
Google Android Help documents sharing a Wi-Fi hotspot with up to 10 other devices. That is the stated maximum in Google’s guidance, not a guarantee for every Android phone or carrier plan; your model or plan may permit fewer. Google Android Help
Quick Recap
10. Escalate to the right support team
- Contact your carrier if mobile data is unavailable, you suspect an outage, or you need to confirm tethering eligibility and plan terms.
- Check the phone maker’s guide or contact its support if your menus differ, the hotspot behaves differently from the documented steps, or you need model-specific band and visibility settings.
- Check the client device’s Wi-Fi or Bluetooth settings if the phone has working cellular data and the hotspot is enabled, but the other device cannot find or connect to it.
