Android is not known to offer this yet. Strings found in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 point to a built-in “Gamepad mouse” setting that would let a connected gamepad or joystick move an on-screen cursor and perform taps. Android Authority reported the find on October 8, 2026, and says it cannot determine when, or whether, the function will reach a public release.
What the beta strings describe
The reporting is based on text inside the Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 build, not on an announcement from Google. The strings include a setting called “Gamepad mouse” and a short description that reads as follows:
<string name="gamepad_mouse_title">Gamepad mouse</string>
<string name="gamepad_mouse_summary">Use a connected gamepad to control the cursor</string>
<string name="gamepad_mouse_main_title">Use Gamepad mouse</string>
<string name="gamepad_mouse_footer_description">Gamepad mouse lets you control the cursor and perform actions using a connected gamepad or joystick.</string>Recommended Free Tools
Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
These are developer-facing code strings as Android Authority reproduced them. They are not official release wording, and a string in a beta build does not guarantee a finished feature. Android Authority’s interpretation is that a joystick would place the pointer anywhere on screen, and the controller’s default action button would simulate a tap.
#1 Best Overall
- Compatible with Windows and Android.
- 1000Hz Polling Rate (for 2.4G and wired connection)
- Hall Effect joysticks and Hall triggers. Wear-resistant metal joystick rings.
- Extra R4/L4 bumpers. Custom button mapping without using software. Turbo function.
- Refined bumpers and D-pad. Light but tactile.
How this differs from gamepad navigation today
Android already supports gamepad navigation, and that is the part most people use now. A controller moves focus from one selectable element to the next, or moves a cursor between clickable items. This works well in apps built around buttons, lists and menus. It breaks down in interfaces that do not expose clean focus targets, such as floating menus and long scrolling feeds, which Android Authority says can be difficult or impossible to operate this way.
The proposed mode would work differently. Instead of hopping between targets, the joystick would position a pointer freely, so any point on screen could be reached.

| Approach | Can reach any screen position? | Extra hardware or software needed | Status on stable Android |
|---|---|---|---|
| Focus-based gamepad navigation | No. It moves between selectable elements only. | A connected gamepad with standard buttons. | Available now. |
| Built-in “Gamepad mouse” (as reported) | Yes, according to the beta strings. Free joystick cursor control. | A connected gamepad or joystick. | Not confirmed. Found only in Android 17 QPR3 Beta 1 strings, with no release date. |
| Controller with a built-in touchpad | Yes, as mouse-style control. | A controller that includes a touchpad. Android Authority did not name a tested product. | Available on some hardware. Compatibility depends on the specific controller. |
| Third-party keymapping apps | Reported as possible, depending on the app. | A keymapping app, plus a controller. Android Authority did not name or test a specific app. | Available from third parties. Not stated for any specific app or Android version. |
What is confirmed and what is not
- Confirmed by the reporting: the beta strings name the setting and describe a connected gamepad or joystick controlling the cursor and actions.
- Not confirmed: whether the feature will ship, when it will ship, and which devices will get it.
- Timing: Android Authority cannot determine when the function will be enabled. Its guess that it could arrive in the stable release of QPR3 next spring is speculation, not a schedule, and beta features are sometimes removed before release.
- Platform context: the Android 16 Compatibility Definition from the Android Open Source Project describes gamepad input mappings, including standard buttons and analog stick axes. That supports general controller input on Android. It does not document the new pointer mode.
- Android 17 rollout: in its June 16, 2026 overview, Google said Android 17 is rolling out first to Pixel devices and then to other eligible Android devices through 2026. That overview mentions foldable gaming mode and controller remapping, but it does not announce a gamepad mouse.
What you can do with a gamepad today
- Check your Android version. Open the device’s software update screen and confirm whether you are on Android 17 or on a beta. A stable device will not show the Gamepad mouse setting unless Google releases it.
- Use focus navigation for standard apps. Most games and well-built apps already respond to a gamepad’s directional pad and face buttons.
- Consider a controller with a touchpad if you need pointer control now. Android Authority says these controllers can already provide mouse-style control. Check that the controller pairs with your phone or tablet and supports the cursor behavior you need before buying.
- Test keymapping apps carefully. Third-party keymapping apps are reported as another route to cursor-style control. Read each app’s permissions and reviews before installing, because the reporting did not test any specific app.
Hardware if the feature ships
The reported feature needs a connected gamepad or joystick, which means a Bluetooth or wired controller that Android recognizes as a standard game controller. Android’s documented gamepad input support is the baseline, so controllers that already work with games should be the starting point. No specific controller is confirmed to support the mode, and a compatibility list has not been published.
Bottom line on timing
The gamepad mouse idea is credible enough to track, because the strings are specific and describe a clear behavior. It is not something to plan around yet. Until Google announces it or it appears in a stable Android build, the reliable options are focus-based navigation and the third-party routes described above.
