The Android Beta for Pixel program gives eligible Pixel owners early access to pre-release Android builds, but beta updates can disrupt normal device functions. Before joining, check the devices listed for your Google Account on Google’s Android Beta Program page and understand that the usual opt-out update erases local data. A limited no-wipe exit exists around a matching stable release, but its timing matters.

Which devices are eligible?

Eligibility depends on the Google Account, device, and build—not simply on owning a Pixel. Sign in to Google’s Android Beta Program page and review the devices shown for that account. Google says eligible devices where that account is the primary user appear there; a device hidden in Google Play will not appear. The device must also be running a public stable build, not a Developer Preview build.

Supported devices vary by Android version and release. For Android 17 QPR 1, Google’s version-specific list includes:

  • Pixel 6, 6 Pro, and 6a
  • Pixel 7, 7 Pro, and 7a
  • Pixel Tablet and Pixel Fold
  • Pixel 8, 8 Pro, and 8a
  • Pixel 9, 9 Pro, 9 Pro XL, 9 Pro Fold, and 9a
  • Pixel 10, 10 Pro, 10 Pro XL, 10 Pro Fold, and 10a

That list is for Android 17 QPR 1, not a permanent roster. Google’s live beta page was promoting Android 17 QPR2 Beta on October 3, 2026, so check the page and the instructions for the specific version you want before enrolling. See Google’s Android 17 QPR 1 enrollment and device information.

What are the risks of joining the Android beta?

Google warns that beta updates are pre-release software that may contain errors or defects affecting normal device function. In its Android Beta for Pixel FAQ, Google states: “The updates that you’ll receive as a part of the beta program are pre-release versions, and may contain errors and defects that can affect the normal functioning of your device.”

Android 17 release notes record examples reported and fixed during that cycle, including problems involving signal display, external displays, Bluetooth audio, hearing aids, accessibility, freezes, and device restarts. These are examples of issues addressed in those releases, not a prediction that every beta user will encounter them. Google recommends backing up before enrollment. Its Android 17 QPR 1 documentation says installing that beta usually does not require a full reset, but still advises making a backup.

Google Pixel 10a - 30+ Hours Battery, Camera Coach, Gemini - Obsidian 128GB
  • Google Pixel 10a is a durable, everyday phone with more[1]; snap brilliant photography on a simple, powerful camera, get 30+ hours out of a full charge[2], and do more with helpful AI like Gemini[3]
  • Unlocked Android phone gives you the flexibility to change carriers and choose your own data plan; it works with Google Fi, Verizon, T-Mobile, AT&T, and other major carriers
  • Pixel 10a is sleek and durable, with a super smooth finish, scratch-resistant Corning Gorilla Glass 7i display, and IP68 water and dust protection[4]
  • The Actua display with 3,000-nit peak brightness shows up clear as day, even in direct sunlight[5]
  • Plan, create, and get more done with help from Gemini, your built-in AI assistant[3]; have it screen spam calls while you focus[6]; chat with Gemini to brainstorm your meal plan[7], or bring your ideas to life with Nano Banana[8]

If the phone is essential for work, travel, accessibility, or emergency communication, weigh early access and the chance to provide feedback against the possibility that an everyday function may not work as expected. Staying on the public stable build avoids installing that pre-release software.

How can I opt out and return to a public Android release?

Decide how to handle the stable update before selecting Opt out: the usual route back to stable erases all user data on the device. Google says an update should arrive within 24 hours of opting out. Installing it wipes the device and installs the latest public stable release; Google also warns that restoring a backup may have issues.

  1. Open Google’s Android Beta Program page and sign in to the Google Account enrolled on the device.
  2. Find the enrolled device and select Opt out.
  3. Read the on-device update details before installing. The offered stable update normally wipes user data.

If you decline that update and keep the device unenrolled, Google says the wait for the next public stable release of the version you were testing may be three to four months, depending on when you opted out. Applying the final public release for that beta version does not wipe the device, according to Google’s FAQ.

Is there a way to leave without wiping data?

There is a narrow, release-dependent no-wipe window. After installing the stable public release update that matches the version being tested, you can opt out of future beta updates without a wipe—but only until you install another beta update. The window is tied to the release cycle, so check the current on-device update and Google’s instructions before installing anything if preserving local data is essential. Google describes this timing in its Android 17 QPR 1 guidance and the program FAQ.

How long does it take to receive an update after opting in or out?

Google says an opt-in or opt-out update may take up to 24 hours to arrive; that is an expected maximum, not a guaranteed delivery time. The FAQ also says to expect up to four automatic updates per month for each program, with separate monthly security updates included in beta builds. These are program expectations, not a promised schedule for every device.
