Android Auto’s weather experience is fragmented: weather apps can appear on compatible car displays, but they do not consistently connect forecasts, radar and alerts to the navigation view. That is the central criticism in Andy Walker’s Oct. 2, 2026 Android Authority opinion piece. A raccoon animation reportedly found in an APK teardown would not solve that product problem—and, at publication, it was neither live nor confirmed for release.
What is actually wrong with Android Auto weather?
Walker’s complaint is about integration, not the total absence of weather data. Android Auto projects compatible phone apps onto a car’s display. In the experience he describes, a driver who wants weather information may have to leave navigation details, open a separate weather app and then switch back. That makes weather less useful precisely when route context matters most.
The desired experience is more practical: current conditions and relevant forecasts should be glanceable during a trip, with alerts or radar available without forcing a driver to choose between the map and the weather screen. Walker presents that as a user-experience judgment from his own use and reporting, not as Google’s diagnosis or proof that every Android Auto installation behaves identically.
The raccoon is an unreleased possibility, not a fix
The “Jimothy, the viral raccoon” reference comes from an APK teardown discussed by Walker. At the time of his article, the animation was not available to users. Google could abandon it, change it or release it later; no confirmation found for this article establishes a launch schedule.

Even if released, a novelty character would address branding or entertainment rather than the underlying information architecture. It would not, by itself, place a useful forecast beside a route, combine radar with turn guidance or reduce the number of screen changes needed to check conditions.
Android Auto and Google built-in are different platforms
Many reports blur two systems that use different software models:
| System | How it works | Weather evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Android Auto | A compatible phone projects supported apps onto the vehicle display. | Google says weather apps can be published for Android Auto, but support for a specific forecast, radar layer or navigation integration depends on the app. |
| Cars with Google built-in | Google’s operating environment runs in the vehicle rather than being projected from a phone. | Google announced The Weather Channel for this environment with hourly forecasts, follow-me alerts and Trip View radar. That announcement did not identify it as an Android Auto projection app. |
Therefore, seeing The Weather Channel listed for a car with Google built-in does not establish that the same app is available through Android Auto. Availability can also vary by vehicle, market and software version.

What weather apps can do today
Google’s Android-for-Cars documentation describes a supported design space for driving-optimized weather apps. Developers can use templates that present relevant weather information, and weather apps may draw maps with temperature, wind and radar overlays. In May 2025, Google said the weather-app category had graduated from beta and that developers could publish weather apps to production tracks for both Android Auto and cars with Google built-in.

MyRadar
Walker names MyRadar as an Android Auto-compatible option. His criticism is that it does not dovetail with the broader navigation experience he wants; a driver may still need to choose between route details and weather information. That is his assessment of integration, not evidence that the app lacks all navigation-related functions.

Weather & Radar
Weather & Radar is another app Walker identifies as supporting Android Auto. The same limitation applies: compatibility with the car display does not automatically mean that its forecast or radar remains visible alongside active turn-by-turn navigation.
The Weather Channel
Google’s Jan. 9, 2024 announcement described The Weather Channel for cars with Google built-in, including hourly forecasts, follow-me alerts and Trip View radar. It should not be treated as confirmation of equivalent Android Auto projection support.
How to judge an Android Auto weather app
Before installing an app, check these four questions rather than relying on the word “compatible”:

The compact setup helps simplify crowded dashboard areas with chargers, audio equipment, Marine Antennas, GPS accessories, and other onboard electronics.
- Which platform? Confirm that the listing explicitly supports Android Auto projection, Google built-in, or both.
- Which information? Look for current conditions, hourly and multi-day forecasts, severe-weather alerts, radar, wind and temperature overlays. A platform’s ability to display an overlay does not mean the app includes it.
- What happens during navigation? Test whether weather remains available while a route is active, whether returning to the map is quick and whether route guidance is interrupted.
- Is it glanceable? Text, colors and map controls should be readable with brief glances. A feature that demands scrolling or repeated screen changes may be technically available but operationally poor.
Use the vehicle’s app catalog and the developer’s current listing to verify availability. Production publication status does not guarantee support in every country or car.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why weather information matters on the road
Federal Highway Administration figures provide context for the importance of road weather, not evidence that Android Auto’s interface causes crashes or that adding more dashboard information would prevent them. FHWA reports five-year averages for 2019–2023, based on NHTSA data analyzed by Athey Creek Consultants, and warns that NHTSA values can be revised:
| Measure | Estimated annual average, 2019–2023 |
|---|---|
| Weather-related crashes | 744,911 per year |
| People injured | 268,239 per year |
| People killed | 3,807 per year |
FHWA’s definition concerns crashes associated with adverse atmospheric weather conditions. These numbers support treating road weather as a serious driving concern; they do not establish a product-impact measurement, distraction result or controlled usability finding for Android Auto.

What a better Android Auto weather experience would look like
- Route-aware relevance: show conditions along the remaining route, not only at the vehicle’s present location.
- Layered detail: keep a simple current-condition summary available, with optional hourly, alert and radar views.
- Persistent navigation: let drivers check weather without losing the next turn, route overview or arrival information.
- Clear severity: distinguish ordinary rain from hazardous conditions without relying on dense text or distracting animation.
- Consistent platform behavior: explain whether a capability belongs to Android Auto, Google built-in or both.
These goals fit Google’s stated aim of making the driving experience “safe, connected and enjoyable,” expressed by Guemmy Kim, Director of Product and User Experience for Android for Cars, in Google’s Jan. 9, 2024 announcement. The statement is a broad product goal, not a commitment to a particular weather redesign.
Bottom line for drivers
Android Auto has weather apps, and Google’s car-platform templates support richer weather maps, but availability and navigation integration remain uneven. MyRadar and Weather & Radar may provide useful data while still requiring a screen switch, while The Weather Channel evidence cited here applies to cars with Google built-in rather than automatically to Android Auto. Walker’s raccoon criticism is persuasive as a product-priority argument: an unreleased meme cannot substitute for weather information that is timely, legible and connected to the route.
