You can use Android Auto’s projection connection without that connection itself providing internet, but Google lists an active data plan among Android Auto’s requirements and advises that the phone be in range of a mobile data network. For offline driving, the practical option is to download a Google Maps area to your Android phone before leaving and keep the entire route within it. Offline guidance has limits: it does not provide live traffic or alternate routes.
Does Android Auto work without mobile data?
Android Auto connects a compatible Android phone to a car display; the USB cable or wireless projection link is not a substitute for mobile internet. Google’s setup guidance says to ensure the phone is in range of its mobile data network, and its getting-started requirements list an active data plan for wired and wireless Android Auto. That is the documented setup expectation, not a guarantee that every feature will stop working the moment service drops.
Google’s Android Auto setup instructions describe the connection steps. They do not establish a universal method for running every Android Auto feature offline. The reliable use case covered here is offline Google Maps navigation after downloading the map in advance.

How wired and wireless Android Auto differ
| Connection mode | What it needs | Does it provide internet? |
|---|---|---|
| Wired projection | A compatible phone and car USB port, plus a high-quality USB cable, as specified in Google’s setup guidance. | No. The cable connects the phone and car; it does not create mobile data service. |
| Wireless projection | A compatible phone and vehicle, Bluetooth pairing, and Wi-Fi support. Google’s Android Auto requirements specify 5 GHz Wi-Fi support for wireless projection. | No. Bluetooth and Wi-Fi handle the local connection for projection, not internet service. |
For wireless setup, follow the car and phone pairing steps and leave the required Bluetooth and Wi-Fi settings available. For wired setup, use a high-quality cable and a port that supports Android Auto; a USB port alone does not confirm compatibility.

Prepare Google Maps for offline driving
- While online, open Google Maps on your Android phone and sign in. Find the destination or area you need and download its map using Google’s Android offline-maps instructions.
- Check the saved map against your complete route. Google Maps can provide offline driving guidance only when the entire route is inside the downloaded area. If the route crosses beyond it, do not rely on the saved map for the full journey.
- Before departure, confirm the map is still available and up to date. Offline maps need updating before they expire, and downloading maps is not available in some countries or regions.
- Connect Android Auto using your supported wired or wireless method. Downloading a map is the offline-navigation preparation; it does not restore internet access to Android Auto.
What offline Google Maps cannot do
- Live traffic: Google Maps offline driving does not provide traffic information.
- Alternate routes: Maps does not offer alternate routes while driving offline.
- Guaranteed access beyond saved coverage: guidance depends on the complete route being inside the downloaded map area.
Offline availability for other apps and Android Auto features varies. Do not assume that voice assistant features, calls, texts, or every media app will work without service. If a media app supports offline downloads, save what you need in that app before losing connectivity; this is a separate preparation step, not an Android Auto workaround.
Keep Android Auto separate from Google built into a car
Google’s instructions for using Google built into a car without a mobile data plan or internet connection concern a different product: Google services integrated into certain vehicles. Those instructions do not establish that phone-based Android Auto has the same offline behavior or map-expiration rules. For Android Auto, use the phone-specific Maps guidance and the limits described above.

If Android Auto will not connect

- For a wired connection, try a high-quality USB cable and a compatible port.
- For wireless projection, confirm the phone and car are paired as instructed and support the required wireless connection, including 5 GHz Wi-Fi where applicable.
- Consult the vehicle manufacturer’s instructions for model-specific setup and compatibility.
Google’s setup guide covers wired and wireless connection steps, while its getting-started requirements list the stated phone, vehicle, data-plan, and wireless requirements. Compatibility details can vary by market, so check the guidance for your region and vehicle.
