Android Auto connection trouble is not always a phone problem. The car may not support the connection mode you are trying to use, setup may be incomplete, or a cable or vehicle setting may be getting in the way. Check compatibility first, then work through the setup and troubleshooting steps below while parked.
Check that your phone and car support Android Auto
Confirm that both your phone and your specific car or aftermarket stereo support Android Auto before treating a failed connection as a fault. A USB port alone does not mean the car supports Android Auto.
Google lists Android 9.0 or higher for most wired connections and Android 11.0 or higher for wireless connections and selected newer vehicles. Requirements and supported vehicle lists can change, so check Google’s current Android Auto compatibility information and the vehicle maker’s documentation for your exact model and year.

Wired and wireless Android Auto are separate capabilities: the phone and vehicle must support the mode you plan to use. If either does not, changing cables or repeating Bluetooth pairing will not make that mode available.

Set up Android Auto while parked
Google’s setup guidance is to put the car in Park, turn on its infotainment system, and allow time to complete setup before driving. Keep your attention on setup rather than trying to configure a connection on the move.
For a wired connection
- Use the vehicle’s USB port that supports Android Auto, not an arbitrary charging-only port. Check the vehicle manual or its infotainment prompts if you are unsure which port to use.
- Connect the phone with a compatible USB cable. Follow the prompts on the phone and car display and grant the requested permissions.
- If Android Auto does not launch, look for an Android Auto icon on the vehicle display and tap it if prompted.
For a wireless connection
- Turn on Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on the phone for setup.
- Pair the phone and car through Bluetooth, then follow the on-screen prompts.
- Android Auto should start within a few seconds after pairing. If it does not, follow any prompts on the display and check whether you need to tap the Android Auto icon.
See Google’s Android Auto setup instructions for the current setup flow. If pairing or setup remains unsuccessful, Google advises contacting the vehicle manufacturer or dealer.
Troubleshoot a wired connection in a sensible order
Check the cable and port first
Google notes that not all USB cables work with all cars. It recommends a high-quality cable shorter than 1 metre (3 feet), avoiding USB hubs and extensions, and suggests trying the phone’s original cable. An independent cable may also be suitable if it meets USB Implementers Forum standards; Google links to USB-IF product information.

- Compatible with wired-only Android Auto systems
- Requires Android 11+
- Multifunctional button for easy phone pairing and switching
- Connects unlimited phones, perfect for road trips
- Plug & play setup, no tech skills needed
Before buying anything, try a known-compatible cable and the vehicle’s Android Auto-capable USB port. Make sure the cable connectors match both devices. If a connection that previously worked has stopped, a cable replacement is a reasonable first check, but it will not resolve an incompatible car, the wrong port, or a problem with wireless setup. Google’s troubleshooting steps are at Check your USB cable.
Check the infotainment system
Confirm Android Auto is enabled in the vehicle’s infotainment settings, then restart the infotainment system. For an aftermarket receiver, check its maker’s support page for available firmware updates.
Troubleshoot a wireless connection
First verify that the particular phone and car or supported aftermarket receiver both support wireless Android Auto. For initial setup, pair over Bluetooth and keep Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, and Location Services on. Then follow the prompts and check the head unit for an Android Auto icon if the app does not open on its own.

Check software and restart both sides
Connection problems can involve the car as well as the phone. Check for available phone and vehicle software updates, and restart both devices. If you use an aftermarket receiver, also check its manufacturer’s firmware instructions. Chevrolet provides additional Android Auto troubleshooting guidance covering software, restarts, and wireless settings.
If the connection still fails after these checks, contact the vehicle manufacturer or dealer with the car’s model and year and a description of whether the issue is wired, wireless, or both.

Keep setup and use safe
Make connection changes and complete pairing while parked. Once driving, use the vehicle’s supported controls or voice interaction only when appropriate, and keep your attention on traffic and road conditions. Android Auto does not remove the risk of distraction. Google’s instruction is direct: “Drive safely. Pay attention to the road and driving conditions, and always obey applicable laws.”
Android Developers documents that supported parked apps on Android 15 or higher can run on the head unit while parked, and Android Auto automatically exits an app when vehicle motion is detected. That describes app behavior; it is not a reason to interact with the screen while driving. See the Android for Cars developer documentation.
