Android apps can help you check print status, view a camera feed, and control a printer remotely—but the right option depends on your printer, firmware, and control setup. The available documentation supports several useful examples, not a verified account of which four apps transformed one author’s workflow. Here are four options and what to check before relying on them.
How Android apps fit into a 3D-printing setup
A phone app is often only one part of the system. OctoPrint, for example, is a printer-control platform with a browser interface for monitoring temperatures, job progress, and webcam video, as well as moving the printer and starting, pausing, or stopping jobs. Its plugin system can extend that setup, and OctoPrint says it works with most consumer printers. Those are platform-level capabilities; they do not mean every Android companion app offers every feature.
Depending on the printer and software, remote control may also require a printer-side agent or a separate host computer. Confirm what must be installed and running before expecting a phone to connect directly to the printer.

1. Obico
Obico is a remote-access option associated with several 3D-printing systems. Its OctoPrint plugin describes remote access, webcam streaming, notifications, printer controls, and file management, along with AI failure detection. The Google Play listing names OctoPrint, Klipper, OctoPi, Fluidd, and Mainsail as supported ecosystems. Obico’s plugin page reports that its AI failure detection has watched more than 80 million hours of printing and caught almost one million failures. That is a vendor-reported service figure, not an independently verified measure of accuracy or a guarantee that a particular failure will be detected.
2. OctoApp
OctoApp is an Android-oriented companion option for OctoPrint. The official plugin directory lists Android-related tags, compatibility with OctoPrint 1.7.0 or newer, and a Google Play destination. That directory entry does not establish the app’s full current feature set, so check its current listing and your setup before depending on a specific function. 3. ELEGOO Matrix
ELEGOO describes Matrix as a manufacturer app for remote monitoring, adjustment of settings, pausing or stopping prints, and print history. Remote control requires an internet connection and successful pairing; ELEGOO recommends registering an account to unlock full features. Compatibility depends on the printer’s capabilities and firmware. The company lists Saturn 4 Ultra 16K, Saturn 4 Ultra, and Mars 5 Ultra as compatible, and says Jupiter 2 support is planned for Q4. Because the page does not establish the year for that Q4 plan, treat it as a stated plan rather than confirmation of current support. See ELEGOO Matrix.
4. Printer Tools
Printer Tools is another possible option; its listing claims support across multiple printer brands. A broad claim does not confirm compatibility with a particular model, firmware version, or control system. Choose based on what you need to do
- For an OctoPrint-based setup: Start by checking whether the companion app supports your OctoPrint version and whether your installation has the required host and plugins.
- For a printer from a manufacturer with its own app: Check the exact model and firmware against the manufacturer’s compatibility information, then confirm pairing and account requirements.
- For remote monitoring: Look for the specific combination you need—camera streaming, status notifications, and controls—and confirm what must remain connected at the printer.
- For broad multi-brand claims: Treat them as a starting point, not a compatibility guarantee. Verify the model, firmware, and control software before setting up a print workflow around the app.
Before depending on phone control
- Identify the printer and firmware. Use the exact model name and firmware version when checking an app’s compatibility.
- Identify the control layer. Determine whether the printer uses its manufacturer’s system, OctoPrint, Klipper, or another supported platform.
- Check required infrastructure. Confirm whether the app needs a host computer, printer-side agent, plugin, or an active internet connection.
- Confirm pairing and account steps. Complete any required pairing, account registration, or permissions before a print needs attention.
- Test the controls while present. Verify that status, camera, pause, and stop functions behave as expected with your particular setup before relying on them remotely.
