To block Android apps from gathering unnecessary data, review each app’s permissions, deny access it does not need, use one-time or while-in-use access where available, and turn off ad privacy features you do not want. These settings reduce specific forms of access; they do not stop every app from sending data it can still access or make every app ad-free.
How to see which permissions apps are using
- Open Settings and search for Privacy dashboard. It is often under Privacy or Security and privacy; labels and locations vary by Android version and manufacturer.
- Choose a permission, such as location, camera, or microphone, to see which apps accessed it and when.
- Select an app to review or change its permission.
Google documents seven days of dashboard history on Android 13 and 24 hours on Android 12. The dashboard is an audit tool for permissions, not a complete monitor of every network connection or data an app transmits. Google’s instructions for the Privacy dashboard describe its history and controls.
Which permission setting should you choose?
Use the least access that still supports the feature you need. In an app’s permission settings, available choices depend on the permission, Android version, and device.

| Choice | When it fits | Trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Deny | The app has no clear need for the data or sensor. | A feature that depends on it may stop working. |
| Allow only while using the app | The feature needs access while you actively use the app. | Background use may not work as expected. |
| Only this time | You need access for one task and do not want an ongoing grant. | The app may ask again next time. |
| Approximate location | A general area is enough, such as for local recommendations. | Features requiring an exact position may be less useful or unavailable. |
| Precise location | A feature genuinely needs your exact position, such as navigation. | It provides more precise location access than an approximate grant. |
To adjust a permission, return to the Privacy dashboard, select the relevant permission, choose the app, and select the access level your phone offers. You can also open the app’s info page from Settings or the app list and choose Permissions. Use Settings search if your phone uses different labels. Android’s privacy and permissions overview explains permission choices and their possible effect on app features.

How to limit camera, microphone, and location access
Revoke access an app does not need
Check sensitive permissions individually. A photo editor may need photos when you choose an image, for example, but that does not automatically justify continuous location access. Denying a permission may limit or disable the specific feature that relies on it.
Use system-wide camera or microphone controls when needed
Supported Android versions provide device-wide camera and microphone access controls, usually in Quick Settings or Privacy settings. Turning one off can block access across apps until you turn it back on; it is different from changing one app’s permission. The control may not appear on every device, so search Settings for camera access or microphone access.

Pay attention to privacy indicators
Android shows indicators when apps access the camera or microphone on Android 12 and higher. Location indicators are described in the Android Open Source Project documentation for Android 17 and higher; do not assume the same location-indicator behavior on earlier versions. Indicators can alert you to certain sensitive access, but they are not a full record of all app data activity. See the Android Open Source Project documentation on privacy indicators.

How to turn off Android ad privacy features
Android offers separate controls for ad topics, app-suggested ads, and ad measurement. On supported devices, Google documents this path:

- Open Settings.
- Tap Google, then All services.
- Open Privacy & security, then Ads, then Ads privacy.
- Review and turn off Ad topics, App-suggested ads, and Ad measurement as desired.
Menu names or availability can differ as Android features roll out and device software varies. Turning these settings off does not promise that ads disappear or that ads will no longer relate to topics or apps. These are ad-privacy controls, not a universal block on app data collection. Consult Google’s Android ad privacy instructions for details.
What an advertising ID setting can—and cannot—do
Do not treat deleting or limiting an advertising identifier as a guarantee that tracking or data sharing stops. A 2024 preprint by Sebastian Zimmeck, Nishant Aggarwal, Zachary Liu, and Konrad Kollnig analyzed network traffic from 1,811 top-free apps in the US Google Play Store. The authors reported that neither Android AdID nor Global Privacy Control had a substantial impact on observed data selling and sharing in that sample. This result is limited to the study’s apps and methodology; it does not show that these controls have no value in every context. Read the 2024 study for its scope and findings.

Check an app’s disclosures before installing
On Google Play, the Data safety section summarizes developers’ disclosures about how an app collects, shares, and handles data. Use it as context when comparing apps, especially if two apps offer similar features. It is information supplied for users to review, not a setting that blocks collection or verifies every data flow in real time. Google explains the section in its Data safety help page.
