On Android 17, turning on Advanced Protection restricts AccessibilityService access to verified apps categorized as Accessibility Tools. Screen readers, switch-based input, voice-access tools and Braille access are the clearest intended beneficiaries. General-purpose automation and convenience apps should not assume their accessibility-based features will keep working when protection is active.
What changes when Advanced Protection is on?
Google says Android 17 automatically limits access to the Android accessibility service framework when Advanced Protection is enabled. Only verified applications categorized as Accessibility Tools are allowed to use it in that state. Android 17 is API level 37 and became available on supported Pixel devices on June 16, 2026, according to Android Developers.
An accessibility service can interact with what is displayed on screen. That access can help someone use a device, but it can also be abused to read sensitive information, install malware, or interfere with uninstalling an app. Google describes the restriction as a way to close off that attack surface while preserving assistive technology.
Which apps are meant to remain available?
Google Play’s eligibility standard is based on purpose: the service must be designed to help people with disabilities use their device or overcome challenges related to their disabilities. The app’s service metadata can declare isAccessibilityTool="true", but a declaration alone does not establish eligibility or guarantee that the app will be verified.

- Screen readers: tools that provide spoken or otherwise accessible descriptions of the screen.
- Switch-based input: tools that let a user interact with a device using switches or similar input systems.
- Voice-based input: tools designed to let people with disabilities control or interact with the device by voice.
- Braille access: tools that provide access through Braille-based systems.
These are Google’s examples of accessibility-tool categories, not a blanket promise that every app in a category will qualify. The app needs a genuine disability-assistance purpose and must meet the applicable verification and Play policy requirements.
What about automation, launchers, and password managers?
Apps that use accessibility access for convenience actions rather than disability assistance—such as broad automation, launcher gestures, password filling, or testing—should plan for those features to be unavailable when Advanced Protection is enabled, unless the app genuinely qualifies as an accessibility tool and passes Google’s requirements. That is the practical implication of Google’s access restriction and eligibility policy, not a determination about any particular third-party app.

Google’s policy also distinguishes assistive use from general automation. Verified accessibility tools may use autonomous Accessibility API behavior when that behavior serves the app’s core disability-assistance purpose. Other apps must keep actions narrow and understandable: autonomous initiation, planning, and execution are prohibited, while deterministic, rule-based automation is allowed under the policy.
For users, the useful questions are whether a feature depends on an accessibility service and whether the app is verified as an accessibility tool—not simply whether it has an accessibility-related setting. If a feature stops working, check the app’s own guidance or contact its developer rather than assuming that changing the declaration or reinstalling will make it eligible.

How developers should adapt
Developers whose apps rely on AccessibilityService for non-assistive features should design for restricted access rather than treat it as an exceptional failure. Android 17 provides AdvancedProtectionManager, which an app can use to detect whether Advanced Protection is active and then adopt a more restrictive posture or disable high-risk functionality.
- Provide a useful fallback for features that cannot operate without an accessibility service.
- Explain clearly which feature is unavailable and why, without implying that users can bypass the protection.
- Keep any accessibility-based behavior within the app’s genuine disability-assistance purpose and applicable policy limits.
- Do not rely on
isAccessibilityTool="true"as a shortcut for general automation; eligibility depends on purpose and policy compliance.
What changes on managed work devices?
Google has announced Android Enterprise support that will let organizations enable Advanced Protection by policy on managed devices later in 2026. Availability depends on that rollout and the organization’s management configuration; the announcement does not mean every managed Android device already has the control.

Developer verification is a separate security program. Google has announced verified developer registration requirements for covered app installations on certified devices in Brazil, Indonesia, Singapore, and Thailand beginning in September 2026, with a planned global rollout across install sources in 2027. That program concerns developer identity and installation provenance; it does not replace the separate requirement that an app genuinely qualify as an accessibility tool to use the exemption.

Advanced Protection trades some broad app access for a smaller screen-interaction attack surface. If you depend on a tool for disability access, its purpose and verification status matter. If you depend on automation or a convenience feature, ask the developer whether it has a fallback for Android 17 with Advanced Protection active; there is no basis to assume every such feature will remain available.
