A PowerShell advanced function is a function written in PowerShell that behaves like a cmdlet. The standard pattern is [CmdletBinding()] followed by a typed param() block; add named lifecycle blocks when the function needs setup, per-item pipeline handling, or cleanup.
Start with the advanced-function pattern
Microsoft Learn describes advanced functions as a way to create cmdlets written as PowerShell functions. Microsoft’s advanced-functions overview shows the familiar [CmdletBinding()] and param() structure.
function Get-Example {
[CmdletBinding()]
param(
[Parameter(Mandatory, ValueFromPipeline)]
[string] $Name
)
process {
"Hello, $Name"
}
}
[CmdletBinding()] is the clearest marker that the function is intended to act like a cmdlet. It also adds common parameters such as -Verbose and -ErrorAction; do not declare parameters with those common names yourself. A function can qualify as advanced through a [Parameter()] attribute, but [CmdletBinding()] is the standard, readable idiom. Advanced functions are still not identical to compiled cmdlets; Microsoft documents differences including Boolean binding, validation attributes used as named parameters, and transaction support.
Design the parameter contract in param()
Parameters tell callers what data a command accepts and how to provide it. Explicit types communicate expected values and let PowerShell convert compatible input. Attributes refine the contract: they can make a parameter mandatory, specify position, enable pipeline binding, group parameters into modes, or reject unacceptable values. See Microsoft’s advanced-parameters reference for the available attributes.

- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
Mandatory, named, and positional parameters
Use [Parameter(Mandatory)] when callers must supply a value. If it is missing, PowerShell prompts during interactive use or reports a binding issue in a noninteractive context. By default, named invocation makes intent clear, such as Get-Example -Name 'Ada'. Add Position only when supporting positional calls is an intentional part of the interface, for example [Parameter(Position=0)].
Whole-object versus property-name pipeline binding
These attributes express different contracts. ValueFromPipeline binds the incoming object itself to the parameter; ValueFromPipelineByPropertyName looks for a property whose name, or alias, matches the parameter. Choose the first when the function consumes each object as a whole, and the second when it consumes a particular field from incoming objects.

# Each incoming string is the value of $Name
' Ada ', 'Lin' | Get-Example
# Each incoming object can bind its Name property to $Name
[pscustomobject]@{ Name = 'Ada' },
[pscustomobject]@{ Name = 'Lin' } | Get-Example
Binding by property name depends on a name match. If the source object uses a different property name, add a suitable parameter alias or transform the input explicitly rather than assuming PowerShell will infer the mapping.
Parameter sets for distinct modes
Parameter sets represent mutually exclusive ways to call one command, such as selecting an item by name or by identifier. Each mode needs a distinguishing parameter so PowerShell can determine which set applies. Make the distinction visible in the attributes, and avoid designing sets that leave a valid invocation ambiguous.

Validation at the boundary
Validation attributes constrain input before the function body runs. Microsoft documents ValidateCount, ValidateLength, ValidatePattern, and ValidateScript, among others. A failed validation produces an error and prevents the function body from being called. Validation applies to values supplied by the caller, not to default values. Place validation attributes before the type declaration to avoid unexpected pre-conversion validation behavior.
param(
[ValidatePattern('^[A-Z]{2,5}$')]
[string] $Code
)
Choose validation that expresses a real requirement. A pattern is useful for a format; a script validator can enforce a more specific condition. Validation is not a substitute for handling failures from the operation itself.

Use lifecycle blocks for pipeline-aware work
Advanced functions can divide execution into named blocks. begin runs once before pipeline records are processed, process runs for each incoming record, and end runs once after record processing. This is the key distinction between accepting a pipeline-bound parameter and actually doing work record by record.
| Block | When it runs | Typical use |
|---|---|---|
begin |
Once before processing pipeline input | One-time setup |
process |
For each pipeline object reaching the function | Work on the current record |
end |
Once after pipeline processing | One-time wrap-up |
clean |
Cleanup across completion and interruption paths, in PowerShell 7.3 and later | Release resources that need cleanup |
For functions that accept pipeline input with CmdletBinding, Microsoft recommends using the parameter variable declared for that input inside process. Without a process block, pipeline-bound input is not handled record by record: execution occurs only once. If a function uses any named block, put its function code in named blocks rather than leaving executable statements outside them. These lifecycle details are documented in Microsoft’s functions reference.

Add clean only when its behavior fits
The clean block was introduced in PowerShell 7.3. It supports cleanup after normal completion, terminating errors, early termination such as Select-Object -First, and pipeline cancellation. Its output behavior is unusual: success-stream output from clean is discarded. Use it for cleanup, not for returning results, and account for the version requirement if the function must run on older PowerShell releases.
Protect state-changing operations with confirmation
For a function that changes files, services, or other state, declare SupportsShouldProcess=$true in CmdletBinding and call $PSCmdlet.ShouldProcess() before performing the change. The Boolean result determines whether the operation proceeds and enables the familiar confirmation controls.
function Remove-ExampleFile {
[CmdletBinding(SupportsShouldProcess=$true, ConfirmImpact='High')]
param(
[Parameter(Mandatory, ValueFromPipeline)]
[string] $Path
)
process {
if ($PSCmdlet.ShouldProcess($Path, 'Remove file')) {
Remove-Item -LiteralPath $Path
}
}
}
Put the check immediately around the state-changing action and make its target and action description clear. This lets callers inspect intended changes with -WhatIf and request confirmation with -Confirm. For pipeline input, place the check in process so each record is considered individually. The feature and lifecycle guidance are covered in Microsoft’s functions documentation.
Keep PowerShell version requirements explicit
The Microsoft Learn pages cited here are rendered for PowerShell 7.4, 7.5, and 7.6, depending on the topic. The clean block is specifically documented as available starting in PowerShell 7.3; do not assume it exists in older installations. If a function must support a particular older release, verify every syntax feature and behavior against that version’s documentation.
