Analytics insights can stay empty because an event listed in a catalog is not necessarily sent by the application. In Daniel Pertu’s account of one project, the team found that five of its ten custom-event groups had no call sites. Waiting longer could not fill those insights; the missing runtime instrumentation had to be addressed.

What “no data” meant in this case

Pertu describes an event file containing around 50 custom events across ten groups. Five groups—payment, feature, engagement, error, and marketing—were never called anywhere in the application. Insights that depended on those events therefore remained empty, regardless of how long the team waited.

This was one project’s self-reported experience, not evidence about how common the problem is across analytics implementations. Its central distinction is broadly useful when diagnosing an empty chart: an event name in a source file or analytics dashboard does not prove the application emits that event at runtime.

How to check whether an event is actually sent

Trace the event to an application path

For each event behind an empty insight, find the code that is supposed to emit it and identify the user action or application condition that reaches that code. If the event has no call site, or its call site cannot be reached in the relevant flow, the analytics service has nothing to record. A catalog entry alone cannot produce data.

Inspect runtime requests

Pertu says he inspected same-domain /ingest requests, including an event endpoint. He also notes that the SDK was not exposed as window.posthog and that payloads appeared compressed in the browser’s Network tab. Those observations describe his implementation, not requirements for other setups. In that case, the visible payload did not identify which events had been sent, so request inspection was not a substitute for tracing event call sites.

Use both code and runtime evidence: verify that the intended path reaches an emission call, then confirm that the application makes the expected request when the action occurs. If no event is emitted, waiting or changing the insight cannot create it.

Decide which events are worth keeping

Pertu’s rule was to add an event only when the answer could change a team decision. An interesting question is not automatically a useful analytics event. Before adding or retaining one, ask:

  • What decision would change based on this event’s answer?
  • Does an existing pageview already show the behavior?
  • Does another system already record the information as its system of record?
  • Are the event’s properties necessary to answer the question?

Applying that test, Pertu says the event set was reduced to 11 entries. The surviving list in the indexed account includes game starts and completions, sign-out, one checkout-start event, onboarding lifecycle events, and review-prompt events. The account does not establish that every listed event was independently tested or that the list remains current.

When pageviews can replace hand-fired funnel events

For the signup funnel, Pertu says pageviews already covered /signup, /signup/success, and /dashboard. The team removed separate signup-started, signup-completed, and signup-failed events, along with corresponding sign-in events. The rationale was that hand-fired funnel events can become detached from routes as an application changes, while a pageview funnel follows the routes being measured.

This choice fits a funnel whose meaningful stages correspond to pages. If the question concerns an action that does not map cleanly to a route, a dedicated event may still be needed—but it should have a reachable call site and a decision attached to it.

Why sign-out identity reset mattered

The team retained a sign-out event for a different purpose. Pertu says its handler captures user:signed_out and calls resetIdentity(). Without resetting identity, a second person using the same browser could inherit the previous person’s distinct ID, causing activity from different people to be merged. This is a concern especially relevant to shared browsers; the account describes the project’s implementation choice rather than prescribing a universal SDK pattern.

Keep event properties minimal

Pertu says the project identified users with a plan_tier property and deliberately did not send email. For onboarding, it used taxonomy IDs and derived booleans—for example, whether a selected employer or role appeared in a list—instead of sending free-text responses. That let the team consider whether its taxonomy covered user needs without collecting the company name someone typed.

The practical principle is to send only properties needed for the decision the event supports. A free-text field may contain more personal or identifying information than a taxonomy value or a narrowly defined boolean, while adding no useful answer to the analytics question.

Preserve event names when charts depend on them

The account says the team kept its established category:action naming pattern because retained events had history and renaming could orphan existing charts. Before renaming an event, check which reports depend on it and whether those reports will continue to resolve after the change. A consistent taxonomy helps, but continuity matters when dashboards already use existing names.

What this case does—and does not—show

The reported figures—around 50 defined events, ten groups, five groups without call sites, and a reduced list of 11 events—belong to Pertu’s project. They are not industry statistics. The source is a first-person DEV Community account; its publication year was not shown, and its implementation details could not be independently verified. The useful lesson is diagnostic rather than statistical: an analytics insight cannot report an event the application never sends.
