Data connectivity links databases, applications, APIs, files, devices, and analytics systems so they can exchange or access data. Data connectivity solutions provide the interfaces and transport for that exchange; data integration is the broader work of moving, transforming, combining, and governing the data so it can be used consistently.
What is data connectivity?
Data connectivity is the ability to link systems and applications so they can share data securely and efficiently. A connection might let one application request information from another, move records from an operational database into an analytics platform, or let a reporting tool query data where it is stored.
Connectivity is the link between systems, not a guarantee that the data will be clean, consistent, or ready for analysis. Data integration addresses that larger job: discovering data, moving or accessing it, transforming it where needed, combining sources, and applying governance. A connection can work technically while the integration still fails—for example, if two systems interpret dates differently or one lacks the fields a report expects.
How do data-connectivity solutions work?
Solutions combine interface choices with movement and processing patterns. An API or connector describes how systems communicate; ETL, ELT, streaming, and virtualization describe what happens to the data. These approaches can be combined rather than treated as mutually exclusive alternatives.

APIs and connectors: the interface
An application programming interface (API) exposes specified data or actions through a defined interface. A client can use it to request information or initiate an operation, subject to the API’s authentication, authorization, and usage rules.
A connector or adapter packages the details needed to communicate with a particular system or service. Prebuilt connectors can reduce custom development, but they do not eliminate configuration, access control, schema changes, or ongoing maintenance. Check that a connector supports the operations and data fields your use case needs.

ETL and ELT: batch movement and transformation
ETL means extract, transform, load: data is taken from source systems, transformed into a target-compatible form, then loaded into a warehouse or other destination. This is useful when data needs controlled preparation before it enters the target.
ELT means extract, load, transform: data is extracted and loaded first, then transformed within the destination, often a cloud warehouse or lakehouse. It can suit organizations whose target platform can handle the transformation workload at scale. It also means teams need to manage what raw data is retained and how access to it is governed.

Streaming and change-data capture: fresher updates
Streaming moves data continuously, while change-data capture (CDC) identifies new or changed records in a source and propagates those changes. They can reduce the delay associated with scheduled batch loads when an application needs more current information. “Near real time” is not a guarantee of instantaneous delivery: actual freshness depends on the source, processing path, and destination.
Virtualization: access without another physical copy
Data virtualization lets a system query or use data in its original location instead of first creating another physical copy. It can be useful when copying is costly or undesirable. The trade-off is that access may depend on the source systems being available and able to handle queries; performance and data freshness can vary with those systems and the access layer.

Workflow and serverless integration: coordinate actions
Workflow integration coordinates actions across applications—for example, triggering a downstream task when an event occurs in another system. Serverless integration can run processing without requiring a team to manage all of the underlying infrastructure. These approaches can complement APIs, connectors, and data-movement patterns; they still require monitoring, permissions, error handling, and a plan for failed or repeated work.
How do the main approaches compare?
| Approach | What it does | Useful when | Key trade-off to assess |
|---|---|---|---|
| API or connector | Provides an interface for requesting data, actions, or exchange between systems. | Applications need to communicate through supported interfaces. | Coverage, authentication, permissions, rate or usage limits, and maintenance vary by system and connector. |
| ETL | Extracts data, transforms it, then loads it into a target. | Data needs preparation before loading into a warehouse or other destination. | Transformation and load processes must be maintained as source formats or requirements change. |
| ELT | Extracts and loads data before transforming it in the destination. | The destination platform can perform the required transformations at scale. | Raw-data retention, access, and transformation governance need to be managed. |
| Streaming or CDC | Moves events continuously or propagates detected record changes. | Consumers need updates more frequently than a scheduled batch provides. | Freshness depends on the whole path; retries, ordering, duplicates, and recovery need attention. |
| Virtualization | Provides access to data in its original location without requiring another physical copy. | Copying data is undesirable or the use case calls for access across existing sources. | Queries depend on source availability and capacity, and performance can vary. |
| Workflow or serverless integration | Coordinates actions and processing across systems, with serverless options reducing infrastructure management. | Events in one system should trigger tasks in others or processing should scale without managing all infrastructure directly. | Workflow failures, permissions, observability, and replay still require design and ownership. |
How should you choose a data-connectivity solution?
Start with the data and the outcome, not a product category. An integration platform may combine connectors, adapters, workflow orchestration, and scaling, but choosing a managed suite also creates vendor, cost, and governance decisions. Compare candidate approaches against the same requirements.

- Inventory sources and owners. List the databases, SaaS applications, files, devices, and destinations involved; record their owners, data formats, and who is allowed to approve access.
- Set freshness and volume requirements. Decide whether scheduled loads are sufficient or whether new and changed records must arrive continuously. Estimate data volume and growth so the chosen path can be evaluated for scale.
- Match the pattern to the use case. Consider APIs or connectors for application-to-application exchange; ETL for controlled warehouse loading; ELT when the destination can transform data at scale; streaming or CDC when freshness matters; and virtualization when avoiding copies is important.
- Check security and governance. Verify encryption, authentication, authorization, and least-privilege access across the connection. Establish who can access data, how it is handled, and how lineage—the record of where data came from and how it changed—will be documented.
- Plan for operations and failure. Decide how to detect failed transfers and data-quality problems, who receives alerts, and how a process can recover. Test retries, replay, and recovery paths before relying on the integration.
- Assess maintenance and portability. Compare connector coverage, custom-code requirements, reliability, observability, deployment options, and the effort to adapt when a source changes. Prefer standards and export options when reducing vendor lock-in is important.
What changes when connecting on-premises and cloud data?
A hybrid connection joins systems that run in an organization’s own environment with cloud applications or data platforms. The design must account for where data is stored and processed, how each side authenticates, what network routes are permitted, and which team operates each part of the connection.
Quick Recap
- Map the path. Identify source, destination, intermediate services, and the direction of data flow. Confirm that required routes and endpoints are available to the systems that must communicate.
- Control access across environments. Use authentication and authorization that limit access to the required systems and data. Check encryption for data moving between environments and controls for data at rest where it is stored.
- Choose where processing belongs. ETL may prepare data before loading; ELT may load data for transformation in the cloud destination. The choice affects what crosses the boundary and where transformations and access controls are applied.
- Monitor both sides. A transfer can fail because of a source, network, connector, workflow, or destination issue. Monitoring should help operators locate the failing segment and recover or replay work without silently losing changes.
What are the common failure points?
- A connection is mistaken for a complete integration. A successful transfer does not establish that fields have consistent meanings, data is valid, or access is appropriately governed.
- A connector is assumed to cover every need. Confirm supported objects, fields, and operations, and account for changes to the source application or its API.
- Freshness is promised without measuring the full path. Continuous movement can still encounter processing delays, outages, or a destination that updates less frequently.
- Failures have no recovery path. Monitoring alerts are not enough by themselves; define how to retry or replay work and how to handle duplicates or partial results.
- Data movement is not governed. Document ownership, permissions, transformations, lineage, and retention expectations—especially when raw data is loaded before transformation.
