Ampere began sampling AmpereOne with customers on May 27, 2022. It was the company’s first server processor built around Ampere-designed cores rather than Arm-licensed cores, with support for DDR5 memory and PCIe 5.0. Later announcements expanded the family’s roadmap from undisclosed sampling silicon to 256-core designs, a future Aurora concept with up to 512 cores, and current AmpereOne and AmpereOne M platforms for cloud and enterprise systems.
What Ampere announced in May 2022
Data Center Knowledge reported on May 27, 2022, that Ampere Computing had started sampling AmpereOne with customers. Sampling means selected customers were evaluating pre-release processors; it was not the same as broad commercial availability.
The announcement identified two important interfaces: DDR5 system memory and PCIe 5.0 expansion. Ampere did not disclose the processor’s core count at that stage and said it would provide more technical information later in 2022.
AmpereOne followed the 80-core Ampere Altra and 128-core Ampere Altra Max. Those earlier processors used Arm-licensed cores, while AmpereOne introduced cores designed by Ampere itself.

Why Ampere moved to its own cores
Ampere said in-house cores would let it tailor the processor to hyperscale cloud requirements. Chief product officer Jeff Wittich described the goal as more predictable performance, greater scalability and better power efficiency, particularly when a service needs a large number of cores.
CEO Renee James said customers were already reporting positive initial feedback and performance during the sampling phase. Those statements are Ampere’s positioning, not an independently controlled comparison with Intel Xeon or AMD EPYC.

Aurora and the 512-core concept
Ampere’s July 31, 2024 Aurora announcement outlined a future AmpereOne product with as many as 512 Ampere cores and integrated AI acceleration. Ampere presented Aurora as a forward-looking product and did not give a confirmed retail launch date in that announcement.
AmpereOne and AmpereOne M today
Ampere’s current processor page lists AmpereOne processors in the 96–192-core range. It also lists AmpereOne M, a family aimed at dense AI environments such as multimodal and agentic large-language-model services. AmpereOne M should therefore be understood as a platform family for specialized deployments, not simply a higher core-count name for every AmpereOne chip.

Where AmpereOne fits in the server ecosystem
The 2022 customer list included Oracle Cloud, Equinix Metal, Tencent Cloud and Baidu. Supermicro and Wiwynn were identified as OEM and ODM companies incorporating Ampere processors into servers. Microsoft Azure had announced a public preview of virtual machines using Ampere Altra, which is an earlier Ampere generation and should not be described as an AmpereOne offering.
In May 2025, Ampere launched its Systems Builders program and expanded AmpereOne M platforms. Ampere said Jabil’s DC-MHS host-processing module based on AmpereOne M was expected to sample by the third quarter of 2025, while ASRock Rack had developed a 12-channel AmpereOne M platform. The cited announcement does not establish whether those sampling plans became generally orderable products.

Ampere’s announcements establish interfaces, roadmap core counts and the company’s cloud-focused design goals, but they do not provide a controlled cross-vendor benchmark. A responsible comparison should use the exact server SKU, workload and software stack rather than declaring a universal winner.
| Comparison area | What Ampere material establishes | What a buyer must verify against Intel Xeon, AMD EPYC or another Arm system |
|---|---|---|
| Instruction-set and software compatibility | AmpereOne uses Ampere-designed processor cores in an Arm server platform. | Check operating-system images, container architecture, language runtimes, databases, proprietary agents and any x86-only binaries. |
| Core capacity | Current AmpereOne listings show 96–192 cores; a 2024 roadmap described 256 cores, and Aurora was described at up to 512. | Compare usable cores, per-core performance, simultaneous workload behavior and the exact competing SKU. |
| Memory | The initial AmpereOne announcement specified DDR5; a later 256-core roadmap platform specified 12 channels. | Verify supported memory speed, capacity per socket, populated-channel guidance and vendor-specific bandwidth limits. |
| Expansion and accelerators | PCIe 5.0 was announced for the sampling generation; later plans included integrated AI acceleration and Qualcomm Cloud AI 100 combinations. | Check the exact PCIe lane layout, accelerator support, topology and whether the required cards are offered by the server vendor. |
| Performance per watt | Ampere identified power efficiency and predictable scalability as design targets. | Require comparable measurements for your workload, including throughput, latency, memory bandwidth, power limits and cooling conditions. |
| Cloud access | Ampere named several cloud customers, while Azure’s cited preview concerned Ampere Altra. | Confirm the provider, region, instance generation, architecture label, pricing, quotas and availability for the specific AmpereOne platform. |
| Total cost of ownership | No complete cross-vendor cost model was supplied. | Include software licensing, migration work, engineering time, host power, accelerators, support and utilization—not just processor price. |
Is AmpereOne available through cloud providers?
Ampere processors are distributed through cloud, OEM, ODM and systems-builder channels, and the company has named Oracle Cloud, Equinix Metal, Tencent Cloud and Baidu among its customers. That customer list demonstrates ecosystem participation, not a promise that every provider offers every AmpereOne model in every region.
Before selecting an instance, confirm that the listing is AmpereOne or AmpereOne M rather than an older Ampere Altra generation. Check the architecture, vCPU-to-core mapping, memory ratio, local and network storage, accelerator options, region, billing model and migration support.
Quick Recap
What the 2022 sampling milestone means for buyers
- It marked a design transition: Ampere moved from Arm-licensed cores in Altra products to Ampere-designed cores in AmpereOne.
- It was an evaluation stage: customer sampling preceded broad release, so the May 2022 announcement was not a retail availability announcement.
- The interface direction was clear: DDR5 and PCIe 5.0 were disclosed from the outset.
- The roadmap remained fluid: later 256-core and 512-core figures refer to distinct future or roadmap designs, while the current family page lists 96–192 cores.
- Workload fit matters: cloud-native, highly parallel services may benefit from many cores, but software compatibility, memory behavior and measured power must be validated on the intended SKU.
