Ampache is a self-hosted web application for browsing and streaming a media collection you already maintain. It can deliver music and video through its web player and supported client protocols, but it is a library presentation and streaming layer—not a tool that organizes your files for you. To stream your own music library remotely, you must install and configure Ampache on a server and make it reachable to compatible devices.
What Ampache does—and what it does not
The Ampache project describes its software as a web-based audio/video streaming application and file manager for accessing music and videos from internet-connected devices. In practice, it presents a collection whose metadata it reads from embedded tags or filenames; it is not a media organizer. The project’s repository explains that distinction at github.com/ampache.
Ampache can stream music to a browser or player and can transcode media on the fly when configured. It does not supply codecs itself. The official wiki describes streaming and transcoding at ampache.org/docs/. Remote access is not automatic or guaranteed: the server, network, configuration, and client all need to support the connection you intend to use.
Ways to listen and browse
You can use Ampache’s web interface and HTML5 player, or connect a compatible application through one of the supported routes. The official download guide lists native Ampache API clients, Subsonic clients, web clients, UPnP/DLNA and DAAP, as well as generated HTTP playlists for compatible players: Ampache download guide.

The project homepage also describes video in the same catalog, live radio streams, scheduled podcast synchronization, collections, and Localplay for controlling a player. It lists native API, Subsonic/OpenSubsonic, DAAP, and UPnP/DLNA access, and an opt-in Jellyfin-compatible backend. These integrations can depend on the Ampache branch and client; the repository specifically identifies the Jellyfin-compatible API with Ampache 8 development, so check compatibility rather than assuming every installation has it. Choose a release before choosing an installation method
As of the project documentation accessed October 4, 2026, Ampache identifies release7 as its stable branch and Ampache8 as in-progress development. The project warns that the development branch may be unstable; Ampache8 requires PHP 8.5 or later. The installation guide identifies develop with Ampache8 and release7 with the Ampache7 line for users who cannot yet move to PHP 8.5. Branch status and requirements can change, so consult the current installation guide before deploying.

Ampache8 is not a drop-in upgrade from Ampache7: the download guide notes its PHP 8.5 requirement, database changes, and changed configuration defaults. Back up your database and follow the project’s upgrade instructions before changing branches. The guide also distinguishes Docker image tags: a version-pinned tag is for a pinned release, latest tracks the current stable branch, and develop provides newer features that may occasionally break. Server and configuration requirements
The official installer documentation lists Apache, lighttpd, nginx, and IIS as web servers that have been used, while noting Apache receives the most testing. Requirements vary by branch; use the official installation page for the current PHP version and required modules rather than relying on an old checklist.

URL rewriting is an important setup requirement. The installation guide warns that streaming, the Subsonic API, and the REST API stop working without it, commonly producing 404 errors. If the web interface loads but streams or API endpoints return 404, check the rewrite configuration and virtual-host rules first. - Consider it if you already maintain a tagged or otherwise organized media collection and want a self-hosted interface for browsing and streaming it.
- Check the client path first if you depend on a particular phone app, media player, or protocol; confirm that the chosen Ampache branch and client support it.
- Plan for server administration if you are not already comfortable maintaining a web application, its PHP runtime, database, network access, and configuration.
- Do not treat extra storage as an Ampache requirement. A NAS hard drive is only a possible optional purchase if your library needs more capacity; the software itself does not require one.
The project homepage identifies Ampache as free and open source under the AGPLv3 license and dates its origins to 2001. That is project history, not a promise of hosted service or universal device access. See ampache.org.
