Yes, Americans are reading for pleasure less often on an average day, while low-pressure group reading events are attracting attention in the Bay Area. Those facts can coexist: one measures daily reading, the other describes local gatherings, and national surveys that ask whether someone read any book in the previous year track a different behavior.

What the numbers say about reading for pleasure

A peer-reviewed analysis of American Time Use Survey data found that the share of Americans who read for pleasure on an average day fell from 28% in 2004 to 16% in 2023. The study covered 2003–2023, excluding 2020 from its trend figures. Its definition was broad: reading for personal interest included books, magazines, newspapers, audiobooks and reading on an e-reader. The study, published in iScience in 2025, measures daily participation, not whether a person read a book at any point during the year.

There is another detail behind the decline: among people who did read for pleasure, average reading time rose slightly, from 1 hour 23 minutes in 2003 to 1 hour 37 minutes in 2023, according to the study authors. That is an average for readers on the days and terms analyzed, not a figure for all Americans.

Why that does not contradict past-year book reading

A 2026 Pew Research Center report says the overall share of Americans who read a book in the past year has been relatively stable since 2011, and print remains the most commonly read book format. This does not cancel out the time-use finding. The measures differ in four important ways:

TableTopics - The Original Conversation Starter Cards - 135 Questions to Break the Ice & Build Connection with Friends, Acquaintances, & Coworkers - at Meetings, Parties, & at Home
  • Sample Questions: Would you rather age forward or backward from this point? What would you try if you had no fear? If you could push a button and eliminate all social media, would you push it?
  • What You Get: 135 sturdy cards with printed questions held in a stylish, clear cube container.
  • When to Use: Dinner parties, cocktail parties, everyday conversations, business events, team meetings, one-on-one or in large groups
  • Ideal For: Adults, friends, new acquaintances, parents, in-laws, hosts, and coworkers will all enjoy playing TableTopics Original.
  • Gifting: A thoughtful gift for hosts, birthdays, holidays, housewarmings, and corporate gifts.
  • Time window: the time-use study asks whether reading happened on an average day; Pew reports whether a respondent read a book during the prior year.
  • Activity: the time-use analysis covers reading for personal interest in many formats; the Pew finding concerns having read a book.
  • Method: the first analyzes time-use diary data; Pew reports survey responses.
  • Geography: both provide national context, while the club examples below are local reporting about the Bay Area.

Someone can read a book once or more in a year without reading for pleasure on a typical day. A lower share reading on any given day can therefore coexist with a relatively steady share reporting at least one book over a much longer period.

What a Silent Book Club gathering is like

Silent Book Club’s reported format is simple: bring a book of your choice, read quietly alongside other people, and talk if you want to. There is no shared assigned title and no need to prepare discussion points. Lyn Davidson, adult services manager at the San Francisco Public Library, described it to Axios this way: “There’s no set agenda, no assignment to all read the same book, no pressure to come up with clever ‘takes,’” in Axios’ August 18, 2025 report.

That is why the gatherings have been described as a “book club without homework” and an “introvert happy hour.” Those are appealing descriptions of a social format, not evidence that all introverts prefer it or that a measured local growth rate exists. The appeal is more specific: people can share a space and a quiet activity without being expected to perform socially or arrive with an interpretation ready.

Where Bay Area examples have been reported

Axios reported two San Francisco Public Library branch clubs, as well as gatherings at local cafes, bookstores and breweries. Its 2025 account named Lyn Davidson and Marina Sobolevskaya, an adult services librarian at the Richmond location, and said the Chinatown branch club began in 2021. These are examples from that reporting, not confirmation that any particular event still meets or has openings.

To find a current gathering, check the relevant library branch’s event calendar or the venue or organizer’s own listings before making plans. Ask whether registration is needed, whether the event is free, what to bring, and whether conversation is genuinely optional. The reported formats and locations vary, and a past article cannot establish current schedules or access details.

How far the “booming” claim goes

The available accounts support that Bay Area silent reading meetups have visible examples and that the format has spread well beyond one gathering. A 2026 feature by Next City Digest says Silent Book Club began in San Francisco in 2012; it reports more than 2,200 chapters in 70 countries. Those are figures reported by that feature as of August 27, 2026, not a live independently verified count. The feature also recounts founder Guinevere de la Mare’s memory of saying, “I wish we had a book club without homework,” followed by her friend Laura Gluhanich’s “Let’s do it.” Those are remembered lines in the feature’s account, rather than contemporaneous transcripts. Don't Overthink It Conversation Card Game by We’re Not Really Strangers
  • A BOLD NEW GAME FROM WE'RE NOT REALLY STRANGERS — with 150 ‘would you rather’ questions that you didn't know you needed to ask. Reveal sides of your friends, your partner, and yourself that you've never seen before.
  • THREE CATEGORIES - Use the spinner to let fate decide which deck you pull a card from. Land on LIFE for the big questions, LOVE for relationship dilemmas, or for the answers nobody saw coming. With each conversation starter card, the conversations are guaranteed to go places you didn't expect.
  • NO EASY ANSWERS - These questions might feel impossible to answer, and that is by design. Watching other players struggle to choose is half the fun, and the other half is learning more about them, whether you use it as a conversation card couple activity or with a whole group, based on their answers.
  • THE MOST IMPORTANT RULE - Don't overthink it. Your first instinct is the most honest one. This game works best when you stop second-guessing and start saying how you really feel for a fun party game or a relationship card game.
  • WHAT’S INSIDE - 150 unique ‘would you rather’ question cards divided into three categories, and 1 spinner.

Neither the national reading study nor these local stories establishes a specific Bay Area growth rate or proves that silent clubs are reversing the national daily-reading decline. The more grounded conclusion is that a flexible, low-pressure way to read together is finding an audience even as daily reading participation has fallen nationally.
