In HostingSift’s September 21, 2026 snapshot, Intel-labelled dedicated-server plans had a lower median monthly price per physical core than AMD-labelled plans: $9.68 versus $13.06. That is a result for a specific set of listed plans—not proof that Intel is always cheaper or that its CPUs are better value. The Intel processors in the sample were older on median, and the price relationship changed when plans were grouped by launch era.

For a useful buying decision, compare exact CPU models and full plan terms, then judge performance against your workload. Price per core is a starting point, not a substitute for either step.

What the 2026 price comparison includes

HostingSift says it captured the snapshot at 01:33 UTC on September 21, 2026. Its database contained 215 active dedicated-server plans with a listed price across 21 providers; 167 were orderable at the time. Of those orderable plans, 109 named an identifiable processor and core count across 12 hosts.

The AMD-versus-Intel medians use 106 plans: three GPU-equipped configurations were left out because the GPU set the price. Another 58 orderable plans published a core count but not a CPU model; they could be ranked by price per core but could not be assigned to a vendor or launch era. The counts therefore describe different subsets, not contradictory totals.

HostingSift’s method counts physical cores, not threads, using the plan’s stated core count where available and processor specifications when a host published only a CPU model. It converted euro prices to dollars at a flat 1.15 for dollar comparisons while retaining the invoice prices in euros. These figures are a dated snapshot using that exchange-rate assumption, not live quotes.

How price per physical core changes by launch era

Grouping the plans by processor launch period changes the comparison. HostingSift reports the following median monthly prices per physical core:

Processor launch era Plans Median monthly price per physical core
2011–2016 7 $9.99
2017–2019 33 $9.10
2020–2022 29 $12.79
2023–2025 37 $14.23

In this sample, the 2023–2025 group’s median per-core price was 56% higher than the 2017–2019 group’s. That is a hosting-price difference between listed plans, not a performance comparison: the table does not establish that each core is equivalent in speed, features, or value for a particular job.

The brand result also varies within eras

Among 2017–2019 plans, the median was $9.01 per Intel core and $9.55 per AMD core per month. For 2023–2025 plans, Intel’s seven plans had a $16.87 median, compared with $13.72 for AMD’s 30. The overall Intel median is lower, but the processor-age mix and the different number and mix of plans mean that a single brand-wide figure cannot answer which current server is the better buy.

Why the median does not establish a CPU winner

The raw comparison is between hosting offers, not CPUs tested under controlled, matched conditions. The median Intel chip in the on-sale sample launched in 2019, while the median AMD chip launched in 2022. A lower per-core price may reflect an older processor, different server configuration, billing terms, or included service—not an intrinsic advantage of one CPU maker.

Nor does the core count alone predict results. Applications differ in how well they use parallel cores, memory capacity and bandwidth, storage, or network throughput. For CPU-heavy work, look for benchmark evidence that matches the software and workload you intend to run. HostingSift also cites an academic study accepted for IEEE Southeastcon 2025 that compared selected SPEC ACCEL OpenMP workloads on virtualized AMD, Intel, and ARM instances across four cloud providers and two pricing arrangements. Its abstract reports that runtime and cost varied by provider and CPU family; it is relevant as an example of workload-specific variation, but it is not a benchmark of the dedicated bare-metal plans compared here.

Vendor benchmarks need the same care. AMD’s official EPYC comparison page presents vendor-published SPECrate2017_int_base results for named two-socket configurations, including a 192-core EPYC 9965 and a 128-core Xeon 6980P. Those are results published by AMD for the stated systems and test; they should not be read as an independent, universal ranking of all AMD and Intel dedicated servers.

Same-host examples show why configuration matters

HostingSift’s within-provider examples do not point to one consistent brand premium. Hetzner’s listed 48-core Intel plan costs more than its AMD counterpart; Namecheap’s listed 32-core AMD plan costs modestly more than its Intel counterpart; and two OVHcloud pairs have equal listed prices. These are examples from provider listings, not controlled comparisons in which every service detail is held constant. The cited Vultr eight-core AMD and Intel plans, for instance, differ in RAM.

Chassis can matter too. In HostingSift’s Hetzner example, the listed AX162 with a Hetzner chassis costs €614, while the Dell-chassis DX182 costs €724; the source says CPU, core count, and RAM otherwise match in the listings. This is a provider-specific price comparison, not evidence that one chassis will always cost more.

Compare the complete offer, not just the CPU

Before choosing between two servers, record the details that determine both the service you receive and the amount you will pay:

  • CPU: exact processor model, launch generation, physical cores, and whether the listing’s core count has been verified against the model.
  • Memory: RAM capacity and, where stated, configuration or speed relevant to the workload.
  • Storage: drive type, capacity, and redundancy. A storage-focused server may have a core-normalized price that obscures what much of its cost buys.
  • Network and location: bandwidth or traffic terms, connectivity, and datacenter region.
  • Hardware beyond the CPU: chassis, included GPU or other accelerator, and other configuration differences.
  • Service and billing: setup fee, monthly renewal price, hourly or monthly billing, committed term, management, and support.

Then calculate the effective cost over the period you expect to use the server. A one-time setup charge can materially change a short project: HostingSift notes that a fee of roughly half a month’s service adds about 17% to the cost of a three-month project, relative to three months of service alone. Its provider medians also mix monthly, hourly, managed, and committed-term offers, so a term-based rate is not directly comparable to a month-to-month price.

Check listing details before relying on a comparison

Published listings are not always internally consistent. HostingSift says older Hetzner price history was unusable because its scraper alternated between a current configuration price and a base catalogue price; it manually checked current values against Hetzner.com. It also flags an Ultahost ULTA-X11 listing advertising a “64-Core AMD EPYC 9454,” although that processor has 48 cores. For its comparison, HostingSift used the host’s advertised number. Treat such discrepancies as a reason to verify the live configuration with the provider before ordering.

For a fair shortlist, match the provider, billing commitment, management level, datacenter region, and as much of the hardware configuration as possible. Compare the actual renewal and one-time costs over your intended term, and use workload-relevant benchmarks for performance questions. A per-core figure is most informative when the plans are otherwise close and their CPU counts and prices are clear.
