Neither name identifies one fixed design or specification. To understand a Ryzen processor, start with its exact model and generation, then check its architecture, core and thread count, socket, memory support, graphics, and power rating.
Ryzen and Zen are different kinds of names
Ryzen is AMD’s processor brand and product family. It covers more than desktop CPUs, so facts about Ryzen desktop models do not automatically apply to Ryzen laptop, workstation, embedded, or server products.
Zen names the CPU architecture used in Ryzen desktop generations. AMD describes Zen as a hybrid, multi-chip design: it separates core and I/O development and uses chiplets as building blocks. Each chiplet houses Zen-based cores, and AMD says multiple chiplets can be combined in a package for higher-performance models. AMD also describes simultaneous multithreading, cache, and prediction features as parts of the core design.
The distinction matters because a Ryzen series number is not a complete technical specification. Models within a broad product family can differ in architecture, chip configuration, graphics, memory support, and power. For specifications or compatibility, identify the full model number rather than relying on the Ryzen name alone.

Ryzen desktop generations mapped to Zen
The following is AMD’s desktop-generation overview. Process figures are family-level summaries, not a substitute for the process details of an individual SKU. AMD’s approximate IPC figures are its published generation-over-generation comparisons; the current overview does not state a common test method across generations or a publication year for these figures.
| Ryzen desktop series | Zen architecture | CPU process technology listed by AMD | AMD-published IPC change over prior generation |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1000 | Zen | 14 nm | Not listed by AMD for a prior desktop generation |
| 3000 | Zen 2 | 7 nm | Approximately 15% |
| 5000 | Zen 3 | 7 nm | Approximately 19% |
| 7000/8000 | Zen 4 | 5 nm/4 nm | Approximately 13% |
| 9000 | Zen 5 | 4 nm | Approximately 16% |
IPC means instructions per clock: a measure of work completed per clock cycle, not a direct promise of a matching percentage increase in application speed. Actual performance depends on the processor model, clock behavior, workload, system configuration, and how a comparison is measured. Treat the figures above as AMD’s architecture-level claims, not independent benchmark results.

What AMD says changed in later Zen architectures
Zen 3
AMD describes Zen 3’s unified complex design as intended to reduce latency between cores and between a core and cache. This is an architecture-level description; the exact cache configuration depends on the processor model.
Zen 4
AMD says Zen 4 redesigned the front end, execution engine, and load/store hierarchy, and doubled L2 cache per core relative to its predecessor. Those are descriptions of the architecture, not a guarantee that every Ryzen 7000 or 8000 processor has the same core count, graphics, or other specifications.

Zen 5
AMD identifies improved branch-prediction accuracy and latency, wider pipelines and vectors, and a deeper design window intended to support more parallelism as Zen 5 changes. AMD attributes its generation-level IPC claim to these changes; the result for a particular application still depends on the exact CPU and workload.
How individual Ryzen models can differ
Two AM5 desktop processors can share an architecture and default TDP while having different core counts or graphics. These AMD-listed examples illustrate why model-level specifications matter:

| Specification | Ryzen 5 7600 | Ryzen 7 8700G |
|---|---|---|
| Architecture | Zen 4 | Zen 4 |
| Cores/threads | 6/12 | 8/16 |
| Socket | AM5 | AM5 |
| Default TDP | 65 W | 65 W |
| Integrated graphics stated on AMD’s product page | Not stated here | Radeon 780M |
| Other model-specific detail | Boost clock up to 5.1 GHz; DDR5 EXPO support | CPU core process listed as TSMC 4 nm FinFET |
Each entry applies to the named SKU, not all Ryzen 5 or Ryzen 7 processors. The 8700G is an example of a Ryzen desktop processor with Radeon 780M integrated graphics; it does not establish that other Ryzen desktop CPUs have equivalent graphics. Likewise, the 7600’s AM5 socket and DDR5 support should not be generalized to older or unrelated Ryzen models.

Some Ryzen X3D models use AMD 3D V-Cache. AMD advertises up to 208 MB of on-chip memory for Ryzen 9000X3D processors; that is a ceiling for the named product family, not a specification for every Ryzen CPU or every 9000-series model. Check the exact SKU for its cache and memory specifications.

How to compare Ryzen processors accurately
For a technical comparison, make sure the candidate processors and the test or build context are explicit. A useful comparison includes:
- Exact model and generation: Record the full SKU and its Zen architecture rather than comparing only Ryzen 5, 7, or 9 labels.
- Core configuration: Compare core and thread counts alongside base and boost clocks; neither count nor clock alone establishes performance in every workload.
- Cache and X3D status: Check the model’s stated cache configuration and whether it is an X3D processor.
- Graphics: Verify whether the exact CPU has integrated graphics and which graphics model is specified.
- Platform: Confirm socket, motherboard chipset, and BIOS support for the particular CPU. A shared socket by itself does not establish compatibility with every board.
- Memory: Check supported memory type and configuration for the exact CPU and motherboard. Do not infer memory compatibility from another Ryzen model.
- Power and cooling: Compare the model’s power specifications and confirm that the planned cooler fits and is suitable for the build.
- Benchmark conditions: Compare results only when the workload, hardware, software, and test method are clear. AMD’s performance figures are vendor claims; its desktop page identifies some comparisons as AMD performance-lab tests with specified systems and games, not universal results.
Which Ryzen processor should you choose?
Choose by workload and platform requirements, not by the Ryzen label alone. First decide whether the system needs integrated graphics, then identify the core, memory, socket, and power requirements for the workload. Compare exact SKUs using model-specific specifications and benchmarks that disclose their test conditions. Before buying or reusing parts, verify the motherboard’s BIOS support, memory configuration, and cooler fit for the exact processor and board combination.
