The rumored September 2024 launch for AMD’s Ryzen 9000 processors with 3D V-Cache was never an official date. AMD announced the Ryzen 7 9800X3D on October 31, 2024, followed by the Ryzen 9 9900X3D and 9950X3D on January 6, 2025. AMD later added the Ryzen 7 9850X3D in January 2026. The original headline’s broader suggestion—that Ryzen 9000 X3D chips would arrive before CES 2025—was directionally right, but its specific September timing was only a rumor.
What the September 2024 rumor actually claimed
HotHardware reported on June 10, 2024 that Ryzen 9000 Zen 5 CPUs with 3D V-Cache might launch as early as September. The report attributed that timing to a Club386 source who had spoken with someone at Computex. It also cautioned that AMD had not confirmed the date. In other words, September was a reported launch plan, not an AMD commitment.

AMD’s June 2024 Ryzen 9000 announcement established the desktop family and its Zen 5 architecture, but it did not confirm a September X3D release. AMD described Ryzen 9000 as an AM5 platform family and said X870 and X870E motherboards were designed to support it. See AMD’s announcement at AMD’s June 3, 2024 release and the contemporaneous HotHardware report.
When Ryzen 9000 X3D processors arrived
| Model or event | Announcement date | Availability information |
|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 7 9800X3D | October 31, 2024 | Announced by AMD; the release covered the product launch rather than establishing the September rumor. |
| Ryzen 9 9900X3D and Ryzen 9 9950X3D | January 6, 2025 | AMD’s CES announcement forecast availability in the first quarter of 2025. |
| Ryzen 7 9850X3D | January 5, 2026 | Introduced as a later Ryzen 9000 X3D lineup update. |
The 9800X3D announcement is documented in AMD’s October 31, 2024 release. The two Ryzen 9 models and their Q1 2025 availability guidance appear in AMD’s January 6, 2025 CES release. An announcement date is not necessarily the same as the date a processor was on store shelves.

What changed in Ryzen 9000 3D V-Cache
For the Ryzen 7 9800X3D, AMD said its 64 MB of 3D V-Cache was placed below the core complex die (CCD), rather than above it. AMD’s stated rationale was to put the Zen 5 cores closer to the cooling solution. This second-generation arrangement is the key architectural change highlighted for the 9800X3D; it does not by itself establish a particular real-world performance level.
AMD describes the underlying technology on its 3D V-Cache technology page. The company’s October announcement also quoted senior vice president Jack Huynh saying AMD was continuing to push desktop performance and innovation for gamers and creators; that is AMD’s promotional statement, not an independent review.

Performance claims: what AMD said
AMD’s June 2024 Ryzen 9000 announcement claimed an average 16% IPC improvement over the prior Ryzen generation for the desktop family. That figure was not specific to X3D processors.

- AMD Ryzen 7 9850X3D Desktop Processor
For the 9800X3D, AMD claimed up to 8% average gaming performance improvement over the previous generation and up to 20% higher performance than its stated competition. AMD also showed a 31% higher 1% low frame rate in The Last of Us Part I while noting similar average frame rates. These are AMD test results and comparisons; they are not independent benchmark findings. AMD’s later January 2026 9850X3D announcement claimed up to 27% better gaming performance than Intel Core Ultra 9 285K, a later comparison that does not validate the 2024 launch rumor.
AM5 motherboard and BIOS considerations
Ryzen 9000 is an AM5 desktop family. AMD identified X870 and X870E boards as designed to support the processors, but compatibility is not guaranteed solely by the socket name.

- Cooler not included, liquid cooler recommended
- Check the exact motherboard model on its manufacturer support page.
- Confirm that the required BIOS version supports the specific Ryzen 9000 X3D processor.
- Verify memory support, cooling capacity and power-delivery requirements for the chosen model, especially the 170 W 9950X3D.
- Update the BIOS using the board maker’s documented procedure before replacing a working CPU when the current firmware is too old.
Board support can vary by model and firmware revision, so consult the motherboard manufacturer rather than relying only on AM5 branding.

Only in a limited sense. The September 2024 date did not become an official AMD launch commitment and was not the actual 9800X3D announcement date. AMD announced that processor on October 31, 2024, before CES 2025, then announced the 9900X3D and 9950X3D in January 2025. The rumor’s general expectation of a pre-CES X3D reveal held up; its specific September schedule did not.
