AMD’s first Ryzen 7000 desktop CPUs launched on September 27, 2022, with Zen 4 cores, the new AM5 platform and integrated graphics based on RDNA 2—not RDNA 3. The launch lineup had four processors, ranging from a 6-core Ryzen 5 7600X to a 16-core Ryzen 9 7950X.
Which Ryzen 7000 processors launched first?
AMD announced the Ryzen 7000 Series desktop lineup on August 29, 2022, and said retail availability would begin September 27, 2022. The initial range comprised two Ryzen 9 models, one Ryzen 7 and one Ryzen 5.
| Launch model | Cores / threads | Base / max boost clock | Total cache | Rated TDP | Launch SEP (USD) |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Ryzen 9 7950X | 16 / 32 | 4.5 / up to 5.7 GHz | 80 MB | 170 W | $699 |
| Ryzen 9 7900X | 12 / 24 | 4.7 / up to 5.6 GHz | 76 MB | 170 W | $549 |
| Ryzen 7 7700X | 8 / 16 | 4.5 / up to 5.4 GHz | 40 MB | 105 W | $399 |
| Ryzen 5 7600X | 6 / 12 | 4.7 / up to 5.3 GHz | 38 MB | 105 W | $299 |
These specifications and prices are AMD’s launch figures. SEP means suggested e-tail price; the dollar amounts are historical launch prices, not current prices or a guarantee of what a processor costs today.
What changed with Zen 4 and AM5?
The launch processors used Zen 4 CPU cores on an optimized TSMC 5 nm process, paired with a new 6 nm I/O die. Ryzen 7000 also marked a platform change: these launch CPUs use Socket AM5 rather than the preceding desktop platform.

#1 Best Overall
- This dominant gaming processor can deliver fast 100+ FPS performance in the world's most popular games
- 8 Cores and 16 processing threads, based on AMD "Zen 4" architecture
- 5.4 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 80 MB cache, DDR5-5200 support
- For the state-of-the-art Socket AM5 platform, can support PCIe 5.0 on select 600 Series motherboards
- Cooler not included
- Motherboard: An AM5-compatible motherboard is required.
- Memory: AM5 introduced dual-channel DDR5 memory; the launch platform does not use DDR4.
- Expansion: AMD specified up to 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes for the platform.
At launch, AMD said it planned to support AM5 through 2025 and beyond. That was the company’s forward-looking commitment in 2022, not a guarantee about every later processor or motherboard feature.
How fast are the launch CPUs?
The boost figures in the table are advertised maximum boost clocks, not a promise that a processor will hold that frequency across every core or workload. Among the four models, the 7950X had the highest advertised maximum at up to 5.7 GHz; the 7600X had the highest listed base clock at 4.7 GHz, tied with the 7900X.

- The Socket AM5 socket allows processor to be placed on the PCB without soldering
- Ryzen 5 product line processor for your convenience and optimal usage
- 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
- Hexa-core (6 Core) processor core helps processor process data in a dependable and timely manner with maximum productivity
- 6 MB L2 plus 32 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance
Clock speed alone does not establish which CPU is fastest for a particular task. Core and thread counts, cache, the workload, and system configuration all matter. AMD also published comparative performance claims for the 7950X, but those should be read as vendor test results rather than independent review findings:
| AMD-reported result | Comparison and qualification |
|---|---|
| Up to 29% higher single-core performance | Ryzen 9 7950X versus Ryzen 9 5950X |
| Up to 45% more POV-Ray content-creator compute | Ryzen 9 7950X versus Ryzen 9 5950X |
| Up to 15% faster gaming | Ryzen 9 7950X versus Ryzen 9 5950X in selected titles |
| Up to 27% better performance per watt | AMD’s named competing system; the comparison is not a general result for every system |
AMD attributed these figures to its Performance Labs. The release gave August 15, 2022 as the test date and described the results as “up to” values; they are not independent benchmark results or guarantees for every application.

Which launch Ryzen 7000 CPU fits which workload?
The specifications support a useful first-pass distinction: higher core counts give more threads for workloads that can use them, while the lower-core models offer a less expensive entry into the same launch platform. That is a selection framework, not a claim that one model wins every gaming or creator benchmark.
- Ryzen 9 7950X: The 16-core, 32-thread option for heavily parallel work where the application can use many cores, as well as users who want the top core count in this initial lineup.
- Ryzen 9 7900X: A 12-core, 24-thread choice for substantial multithreaded work without moving to the 7950X’s 16 cores.
- Ryzen 7 7700X: An 8-core, 16-thread middle option for a gaming-focused or mixed-use build that does not need the Ryzen 9 models’ core counts.
- Ryzen 5 7600X: The least expensive launch model and a 6-core, 12-thread option for a budget-conscious gaming build or general desktop use.
Choose by the applications you run and the total build budget, including the AM5 motherboard and DDR5 memory—not by treating launch SEP or maximum boost clock as a current buying recommendation.

Was the Ryzen 7000 graphics surprise RDNA 3?
No. AMD’s launch material identifies the integrated graphics introduced with these Ryzen desktop processors as AMD RDNA 2. It was the first time AMD brought integrated graphics to a Ryzen desktop processor, according to the company’s partner overview. The launch evidence does not support describing the integrated graphics as RDNA 3.
That distinction corrects the “RDNA 3 surprise” premise: the notable launch change was integrated RDNA 2 graphics, not a debut of RDNA 3. The information here establishes the graphics architecture, but does not specify graphics performance or support a claim that the integrated graphics can replace a discrete GPU for demanding gaming.
