AMD’s Computex 2022 keynote showed a pre-production Ryzen 7000 processor running at 5.5 GHz during AAA gameplay and claimed it was more than 30% faster than Intel’s Core i9-12900K in a Blender rendering demonstration. That was a narrow, AMD-reported result—not proof that Ryzen 7000 broadly “smoked” Alder Lake across games, apps, or retail PCs.

What AMD announced at Computex 2022

On May 23, 2022, AMD Chair and CEO Lisa Su previewed Ryzen 7000 desktop processors, built on the Zen 4 architecture. AMD said the processors were expected in fall 2022 and projected more than 15% higher single-thread performance than the prior generation. That figure was a company projection made before launch, not an independent benchmark. AMD’s Computex announcement framed the product as a next step for gaming and creator PCs.

Su described AMD’s positioning this way: “With our upcoming AMD Ryzen 7000 Series desktop processors, we will bring even more leadership to the desktop market with our next-generation 5nm ‘Zen 4’ architecture and provide an unparalleled, high-performance computing experience for gamers and creators.” That is AMD’s stated ambition, rather than an independent assessment.

What the “smokes Alder Lake” comparison actually showed

AMD highlighted two separate demonstrations using a pre-production Ryzen 7000 processor. In one, the chip reached 5.5 GHz during AAA gameplay. In another, AMD said it was more than 30% faster than an Intel Core i9-12900K in Blender multithreaded rendering. The 30% figure applies to that rendering workload as presented by AMD; it is not a general performance margin over Intel’s Alder Lake processors.

Keynote claim What it establishes What it does not establish
5.5 GHz during AAA gameplay on a pre-production sample (AMD, 2022) A clock speed AMD demonstrated in a gameplay scenario. Average gaming performance, sustained all-core clocks, or results on a retail processor.
More than 30% faster than Core i9-12900K in Blender multithreaded rendering (AMD, 2022) AMD’s result in one named rendering application and workload. A broad win across applications, games, or systems tested under a full independent benchmark suite.
More than 15% projected single-thread uplift over the prior generation (AMD, 2022) AMD’s pre-launch performance projection. An independently measured or guaranteed uplift for every task or model.

The Computex material did not provide a broad, like-for-like gaming benchmark suite against Alder Lake. The figures should therefore be read as announcement-stage vendor claims, not as a comprehensive Ryzen 7000-versus-Alder Lake verdict.

Zen 4, graphics, and the AM5 platform

AMD said Ryzen 7000 would use a new 5 nm Zen 4 architecture and a 6 nm I/O die with integrated RDNA 2-based graphics. The platform brought DDR5 memory and PCI Express 5.0 support through Socket AM5. In its Computex release, AMD described AM5 as a 1718-pin LGA socket with dual-channel DDR5 and support for up to 24 PCIe 5.0 lanes.

AMD Ryzen 5 7600X 6-Core, 12-Thread Unlocked Desktop Processor
  • The Socket AM5 socket allows processor to be placed on the PCB without soldering
  • Ryzen 5 product line processor for your convenience and optimal usage
  • 5 nm process technology for reliable performance with maximum productivity
  • Hexa-core (6 Core) processor core helps processor process data in a dependable and timely manner with maximum productivity
  • 6 MB L2 plus 32 MB L3 cache memory provides excellent hit rate in short access time enabling improved system performance

These platform details explain why the announcement was more than a processor-speed preview: Ryzen 7000 was tied to a new socket and newer memory and I/O standards. The announcement alone does not establish the performance or value of any particular motherboard or complete system.

How the preview relates to the retail launch

Computex was a preview, not the retail launch. AMD announced the Ryzen 7000 desktop family on August 29, 2022, naming the Ryzen 9 7950X among the processors and providing launch-era product details. The launch announcement is distinct from the May keynote demonstration, and it does not turn that single Blender comparison into a general benchmark result. AMD’s August 2022 launch announcement covers the later product introduction.
