The Radeon RX 6700 XT remains a 1440p-focused graphics card with 40 compute units, 12GB of GDDR6, and a 230W typical board power rating. Its launch-era testing showed strong traditional rasterized performance against the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070, but substantially weaker ray-tracing results in the limited games tested. Because those benchmarks and the $479 price date from March 2021, whether it is worth buying now depends on the exact used or remaining-new board, its warranty, and its current price.

RX 6700 XT specifications

AMD’s current product page lists these specifications for the reference design:

Specification RX 6700 XT
Architecture AMD Radeon RX 6000 series
Compute units 40
Game frequency Up to 2424 MHz
Memory 12GB GDDR6
Memory interface 192-bit
Infinity Cache 96MB
Maximum memory bandwidth Up to 384GB/s
Typical board power 230W
AMD-recommended minimum PSU 650W
Auxiliary power One 8-pin and one 6-pin connector
Reference-card length 267mm

These figures come from AMD’s RX 6700 XT specification page. Partner cards can use different coolers, factory clocks, dimensions, connector layouts, and power limits, so check the exact model rather than assuming every RX 6700 XT matches the reference card.

How good is the RX 6700 XT at 1440p?

AMD positioned the card for 1440p gaming, and Tom’s Hardware described 1440p as its sweet spot in testing published March 17, 2021. In that review’s 1080p ultra rasterization suite, which excluded games using DirectX Raytracing, the RX 6700 XT averaged 131 frames per second. That was about 7% faster than the RTX 3060 Ti and 1% slower than the RTX 3070. Tom’s Hardware also measured it as 26% faster than the RX 5700 XT in its comparison set.

#1 Best Overall
ASUS Dual Radeon RX 9060 XT 16GB GDDR6 Gaming Graphics Card
  • Axial-tech fans now feature a smaller fan hub that facilitates longer blades and a barrier ring that increases downward air pressure
  • 2.5-slot design allows for greater build compatibility while maintaining cooling performance
  • 0dB technology lets you enjoy light gaming in relative silence
  • Dual BIOS switch lets you toggle between Quiet and Performance BIOS profiles
  • Dual ball fan bearings last up to twice as long as sleeve bearing designs

Those are launch-review results, not current benchmarks. Game patches, drivers, newer engines, and changing test suites can alter relative performance. Treat the figures as historical positioning: the RX 6700 XT was broadly between the RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070 for conventional rendering in that review.

Can the RX 6700 XT run ray tracing?

Yes, but ray tracing is the card’s clear weakness relative to comparable Nvidia hardware in the published testing. In Watch Dogs Legion at ultra settings with DXR enabled, Tom’s Hardware recorded 35 fps for the RX 6700 XT versus 52 fps for the RTX 3060 Ti. The RTX 3060 Ti reached 70 fps with DLSS Quality enabled in that test.

This was one game and one review-era configuration, so it should not be generalized to every ray-traced title. It does establish that choosing the RX 6700 XT primarily for heavy ray-tracing workloads involves a significant performance trade-off. Check the specific games you play and whether their upscaling options meet your image-quality expectations.

RX 6700 XT versus RTX 3060 Ti and RTX 3070

Comparison Published result How to interpret it
Rasterized 1080p ultra average 131 fps for RX 6700 XT; approximately 7% ahead of RTX 3060 Ti and 1% behind RTX 3070 Tom’s Hardware’s 2021 suite, excluding DXR games
Watch Dogs Legion, ultra DXR 35 fps RX 6700 XT; 52 fps RTX 3060 Ti One game and setting from the 2021 review
Watch Dogs Legion, RTX 3060 Ti with DLSS Quality 70 fps Nvidia result reported by the same test; not an RX 6700 XT result
Generational comparison RX 6700 XT was 26% faster than RX 5700 XT Review-suite and review-era conditions apply

Why the exact board model matters

“RX 6700 XT” identifies the GPU, not a single physical card. Partner designs can differ in:

  • Length, thickness, and the number of expansion slots
  • Cooler capacity, fan behavior, and noise
  • Factory-overclocked frequencies and power limits
  • Power-connector placement and required cables
  • Warranty terms and remaining support

In Tom’s Hardware’s factory-overclocked comparison, the tested Sapphire card averaged 6% faster than the tested Gigabyte card. That is a result for those two samples and that test suite, not a universal ranking of every Sapphire or Gigabyte RX 6700 XT.

What power supply and case do you need?

Power supply

AMD recommends a minimum 650W power supply for the RX 6700 XT and specifies one 8-pin plus one 6-pin auxiliary connector for the reference specification. A reliable unit with the required native cables is preferable to adapters. Other components, overclocking, and a partner card’s higher power limit can change the practical requirement, so follow the board manufacturer’s specification when it differs.

Case clearance

AMD lists a 267mm reference-card length. Measure the usable clearance in your case, including front fans, drive cages, radiator hardware, and the space needed for power-cable bends. Partner cards may be considerably longer or thicker than 267mm.

Is the RX 6700 XT still worth buying?

There is no universal yes or no without a current listing. The documented $479 price was the official launch price reported in 2021, not a present-day street price. Current stock, seller quality, used condition, warranty coverage, and competing cards are not established by the launch review.

Use this checklist before purchasing:

  1. Record the exact manufacturer and model number.
  2. Confirm the card’s length, thickness, slot occupancy, clock, connectors, and stated PSU requirement.
  3. Compare the seller’s price with newer GPUs available in your region.
  4. For a used card, ask about operating history, repairs, mining use, temperatures, and proof that all fans and display outputs work.
  5. Verify return rights and warranty transferability.
  6. Match the decision to your games: rasterized 1440p favors the RX 6700 XT’s launch profile, while extensive ray tracing favors cards with stronger DXR performance and suitable upscaling support.

Launch context

AMD announced the product on March 3, 2021, describing it as delivering “Exceptional 1440p PC Gaming Experiences.” That is manufacturer positioning rather than an independent test conclusion. Tom’s Hardware’s March 17, 2021 verdict called its performance good and its official price reasonable, while noting launch-demand concerns. Both statements describe the launch market and should not be read as current pricing or availability guidance. See AMD’s launch announcement for the original positioning.
