AMD Ross is a downloadable agentic AI assistant for embedded development, announced September 30, 2026, and described by AMD as available now. It connects natural-language interaction with supported AMD tools, documentation, reusable engineering workflows and design examples. Ross is software, not a hardware product; an FPGA board is not required to use it.

What AMD Ross is—and what it does

AMD positions Ross as an assistant for work across embedded hardware design and debug, software and algorithms, edge AI, system design and deployment. Its launch announcement says Ross can search supported documentation, interact with supported tools, run commands, explain errors and guide workflows. The supported development flow named at launch includes Vivado Design Suite, ChipScope, Power Design Manager, Vitis, Vitis HLS, Vitis AI, ROCm AI and Ryzen AI software. The specific features available depend on the tool and setup.

Ross is built from four parts, according to AMD:

  • MCP servers connect agents to supported AMD tools and tool sessions.
  • AMD Knowledge Base searches supported public AMD documentation using retrieval-augmented generation. AMD describes both cloud and local deployment options for supported setups.
  • Expert-authored agent skills package repeatable engineering workflows.
  • Ready-to-run design examples demonstrate those skills.

This combination distinguishes Ross from a general coding assistant: it is intended to bring AMD tool connections and engineering-specific knowledge and workflows into an agentic experience. AMD says this can accelerate typical development cycles, but its launch materials do not provide an independent benchmark or measured productivity result. A customer testimonial on AMD’s product page reports help with troubleshooting and debugging; that is a customer statement, not a controlled performance evaluation.

Availability and supported software

AMD says Ross is available now and plans monthly additions to embedded tools and workflow capabilities. Its product FAQ says Ross’s release cadence is independent of the usual Vivado and Vitis tool releases. Support details can change, so consult AMD’s current Ross product page and downloads page before choosing a setup.

At the time of the October 2, 2026 downloads-page snapshot, AMD listed Vivado support for all versions and Vitis HLS support for 2025.2 and later. The download listing showed the Vivado AI VS Code extension and Vivado MCP servers at version 2026.9.1, with September 29, 2026 update dates. The local knowledge-base packages were dated September 18 and also showed September 29 updates. These are dated listing details, not permanent compatibility guarantees.

What you need to use Ross

AMD’s stated prerequisites are applicable AMD tool downloads, installation and licenses; a compatible IDE or CLI; and access to a preferred language model. AMD says no additional Ross license is required beyond any licenses required for the AMD tools you use.

The product page names clients including VS Code, Cursor, Devin, Claude Code, GitHub Copilot CLI and Codex CLI. A client must be compatible with Ross’s MCP servers, so the list should not be read as a promise that every feature works identically in every client. Users provide the language model; the listed clients and model availability may change.

Deployment and workflow choices

Simplified VS Code setup

AMD describes a simplified setup using its VS Code extension, Vivado MCP and the RAG-enabled AMD Knowledge Base. Follow the current AMD setup documentation for exact installation and configuration steps; the launch information does not establish a single UI path that applies to all versions and environments.

  • 4.2 GHz Max Boost, unlocked for overclocking, 19 MB cache, DDR4-3200 support
  • For the advanced Socket AM4 platform

Local or air-gapped deployment

For air-gapped use, AMD says to deploy the knowledge database with an embedding model and MCP server, then use an answer-generation model suited to the system’s hardware and network policy. This is a deployment choice for environments with particular data or connectivity requirements, not a claim that every Ross component is automatically local in every configuration.

HLS skills without an MCP server

AMD says HLS skills can work directly with source code and project files through command-line tools such as v++ and vitis-run, without an MCP server. This is a useful distinction when evaluating workflows: some use MCP connections, while this stated HLS path works through command-line access.

FPGA hardware is optional

Readers doing FPGA development may separately need suitable hardware for their own design and debug work, but Ross itself is downloadable software and AMD’s launch materials do not identify an FPGA board as a prerequisite or establish a particular board as compatible. Verify hardware and tool-version compatibility for the project rather than buying a board on the assumption that Ross requires one.

Review AI output and protect sensitive data

AMD cautions that AI workflows are nondeterministic: results can vary across runs, models and prompt wording. Its launch page says Ross operates within configured user permissions and supported tool environments, while leaving users responsible for reviewing recommendations and proposed actions before relying on or implementing them.

AMD also advises against submitting confidential, personal or regulated data unless its use is authorized for the specific model, tool and deployment configuration. That warning matters especially when deciding between a cloud knowledge-base arrangement and a local or air-gapped setup; check the applicable organization and model policies before connecting project materials.

AMD’s claims and the evidence available

In its September 30, 2026 announcement, AMD describes Ross as a way to bring tools, knowledge and authored workflows together across increasingly complex embedded development tasks. The announcement’s claims about accelerating typical cycles are AMD’s own product description. AMD’s reviewed launch, product and download pages do not report an independently measured numerical performance result for Ross, so there is no substantiated percentage or time saving to apply to a user’s project.

AMD’s product page also links the documentation, skills, design examples and release notes repository at GitHub. Use AMD’s current product and download materials to confirm what is supported for a particular tool version, client and deployment before configuring a workflow.
