If your AMD graphics driver seems to disable itself after a Windows 11 update, first check whether Windows changed the installed driver version, blocked the driver from loading, or the AMD installer was interrupted. Those are different problems with different fixes. AMD specifically documents Windows reverting a driver after installation as Error 205; Microsoft separately documents a Windows policy that can block some drivers from loading.
First identify what Windows or the AMD installer is reporting
“Disables itself” describes a symptom, not a confirmed cause. Before changing settings, note your AMD GPU model, Windows 11 version and build, installed driver version, and the exact Device Manager status or AMD installer error. Then match what you see to the cases below.
- The driver version changed after AMD Software installed: This may match AMD Error 205, which describes Windows reverting the graphics driver after a successful AMD Software Package installation.
- Windows says the driver is blocked or the device will not load it: A Windows Driver Policy block is one possibility. Check Code Integrity events before concluding that this policy is responsible.
- The AMD installer will not proceed while Windows Update is running: This may be AMD Error 202, an installation timing conflict rather than a post-install rollback.
Fix an AMD driver rollback (Error 205)
AMD says: “Windows® operating system may have reverted the driver version for your AMD Graphics device, after the AMD Software Package was successfully installed.” That describes a possible rollback after installation; it does not establish that every report of a disabled driver has this cause. For cases that match Error 205, AMD recommends temporarily changing Windows Device Installation Settings, then reinstalling the AMD package.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches- Search for
sysdm.cplfrom the Windows taskbar and open System Properties. - Select Hardware > Device Installation Settings.
- Choose NO, save the change, and restart the PC.
- Reinstall the AMD Software Package for your exact graphics product.
AMD presents this as troubleshooting for Error 205, not as a universal permanent Windows setting. After troubleshooting, review the setting and decide whether to restore its previous value.

Get a compatible AMD driver package
Use AMD’s official driver support page to find the package for your product, or use AMD Auto-Detect if your device and Windows version are supported. AMD says Auto-Detect checks supported Radeon graphics and Ryzen chipset devices and Windows versions, then presents packages for the detected device. AMD’s article, last updated June 2, 2025, lists Windows 11 version 21H2 and later; compatibility still depends on the product and driver release.
AMD offers Recommended and Optional driver packages. Choose from the releases AMD presents for your detected product rather than assuming a package for a different GPU or Windows release will be compatible. On an OEM laptop, also check the PC maker’s support page: it may provide a product-specific driver.

When to use the installer’s clean-install option
If reinstalling the correct package normally does not help, AMD’s installation guide describes a Clean Install option. It attempts to remove detected AMD driver and software versions before installing the selected components, then restarts the system. Save open work before proceeding.

AMD also offers a Factory Reset option in the Auto-Detect workflow. AMD says it removes previous package versions and temporarily pauses Windows Updates during installation; you will not be able to roll back to the previous driver. Consider that tradeoff before choosing it rather than starting with the more disruptive reset.

Check for a Windows driver block
A rollback is different from a driver that Windows refuses to load. Microsoft explains that Windows Driver Policy can move from evaluation, when policy violations are logged but allowed, to enforcement, when drivers that fail policy requirements can be blocked. In the enforcement context, Microsoft notes: “This can cause drivers that were working previously to stop loading.” That possibility should be investigated, not assumed.
- Check the Code Integrity operational log for events identifying the affected driver and policy. Use the event details to determine whether a policy block is actually being reported.
- Check Windows Update for a compatible driver under Optional updates > Driver updates.
- If Windows Update does not offer a suitable version, check AMD’s official support page or the PC maker’s support page for a compatible, WHCP-certified signed driver.
Microsoft warns that disabling Windows Driver Policy reduces device security and recommends obtaining a WHCP-certified driver instead. Do not turn off the policy as a routine fix.

If the installer reports AMD Error 202
Error 202 is about an update currently in progress, not a driver version reverting after installation. AMD advises waiting for Windows Update to finish, restarting if needed, and then retrying the AMD Software installation. Avoid treating this installer timing conflict as evidence of a blocked driver.
If the driver still will not install or load
Keep the exact error message and installation log, along with the GPU model, Windows build, and driver version. Contact AMD support or the PC maker for help, particularly on an OEM laptop with product-specific drivers. AMD and Microsoft’s guidance does not establish one recovery path that applies to every OEM system or Windows build.
