The $4.4 billion figure refers to Amazon Web Services’ planned investment in its Hyderabad cloud region through 2030—not a single data-center contract or Amazon’s total investment in India. AWS said the spending would support construction and operation of the region and purchases from regional businesses.
What does the $4.4 billion plan cover?
AWS announced the plan on November 22, 2022, for its Asia Pacific (Hyderabad) Region. The company described it as more than $4.4 billion, or approximately INR 36,300 crore, through 2030. It includes capital spending on data-center construction, operating expenses for utilities and facilities, and purchases of goods and services from regional businesses. AWS’s announcement presents this as a planned regional investment, not money already spent or the cost of one building.
What is the Hyderabad AWS Region?
An AWS Region is a geographic area containing cloud infrastructure organized into Availability Zones. AWS said the Hyderabad Region has three Availability Zones. It joined AWS’s Mumbai Region, which opened in June 2016. The two-region footprint gives customers options for storing data in India, as well as lower latency and resilience, according to AWS. The investment figure is associated with the region as a whole rather than a named facility. AWS explains its Regions and Availability Zones.
What economic effects did AWS project?
AWS estimated that the Hyderabad investment would support more than 48,000 full-time jobs annually at external businesses over the investment period. It also projected that construction and operation of the region would contribute approximately $7.6 billion (approximately INR 63,600 crore) to India’s GDP by 2030. These are AWS projections, not observed job totals or independently verified outcomes. The company’s announcement attributes the estimates to its investment plan.

Is $4.4 billion Amazon’s total India investment?
No. The $4.4 billion commitment is tied to the Hyderabad AWS Region. Subsequent announcements describe broader plans with different scopes, so the amounts should not be treated as additive totals without accounting for overlap.
| Announcement | Scope and horizon | Stated amount |
|---|---|---|
| AWS, November 2022 | Hyderabad Region through 2030 | More than $4.4 billion planned |
| AWS, 2023 | Cloud infrastructure across India by 2030 | $12.7 billion planned; AWS said this would bring its total India investment to $16.4 billion by 2030 |
| Amazon, 2026 | Additional investment in AI and cloud infrastructure in India, with expansion stated for Mumbai and Hyderabad | $13 billion announced |
The 2023 India-wide figure and the 2026 Amazon announcement have wider scopes than the Hyderabad-specific 2022 commitment. The 2026 announcement was described as building on Amazon’s company-wide $35 billion plan announced in 2025. Why AWS says the investment matters
The infrastructure is intended to serve customers seeking cloud capacity in India. AWS says having Regions in Hyderabad and Mumbai gives customers choices for local data storage, lower latency, and resilience. In a May 18, 2023 announcement, Puneet Chandok, president of commercial business, AWS India and South Asia, said: “Since 2016, AWS has invested billions of dollars into cloud infrastructure in India to support the tremendous growth we have witnessed in the use of cloud for digital transformation.” This is the company’s rationale for its broader India infrastructure presence, rather than a statement that the Hyderabad allocation alone accounts for all of that investment.
