Amazon expects to spend $220 billion on company-wide capital investment in 2026, more than Alphabet’s reported $195–205 billion range and Microsoft’s roughly $190 billion expectation. But those figures are not comparable AI-only budgets: Amazon’s total covers more than AWS and AI, and the companies report different scopes and accounting details.
How the 2026 spending plans compare
The latest cited expectations put Amazon ahead in total planned dollars. The figures are company-level or company-guidance totals, not standardized measures of spending on AI infrastructure.
| Company | 2026 capex expectation | Scope and qualification |
|---|---|---|
| Amazon | $220 billion | Company-wide expectation after its Q2 results, reported July 30, 2026. The Associated Press described technology spending as mostly AI-related, alongside investment in robots, semiconductors, and satellites; this is not an AWS-only total. Associated Press |
| Alphabet / Google | $195–205 billion | Full-year 2026 outlook reported after Q2 results, raised from $180–190 billion. Associated Press |
| Microsoft | About $190 billion | Calendar-year expectation described on the April 29, 2026 Q3 FY2026 call; it included about $25 billion of higher component costs. Microsoft said in July that the expectation remained unchanged in substance after an accounting change. Microsoft Q3 FY2026 call and Microsoft Q4 results |
These are management expectations and reported outlooks, not final audited totals for 2026. Amazon’s $220 billion figure is the clearest basis for saying Amazon plans to outspend the other two in broad capital spending, but it does not establish that AWS itself will spend more on AI infrastructure than Microsoft or Google.
How much is AWS spending on AI infrastructure?
The cited sources do not provide a standalone dollar total for AWS’s 2026 capex or a directly comparable AWS-only AI infrastructure budget. Amazon CEO Andy Jassy’s 2025 shareholder letter refers specifically to AWS capex, saying: “Of the AWS capex we expect to spend in 2026, much of which will be monetized in 2027-2028, we already have customer commitments for a substantial portion of it.” That is management’s forward-looking statement about AWS investment and expected customer commitments, not a published AWS dollar figure. Create routines to automatically turn on lights when you walk into a room, or start a fan if the inside temperature goes above your comfort zone.
- Do more with device pairing – Fill your home with music using compatible Echo devices in different rooms, or create a home theatre system with Fire TV.
- Say goodbye to drop-offs and buffering - With eero Built-in, Echo Dot doubles as a mesh wifi extender, adding up to 1,000 sq. ft. of wifi coverage to your existing eero network.
Amazon said AWS sales in Q2 2026 were $42.2 billion, up 37% year over year, and that its AI business had passed a $25 billion annual revenue run rate. These company-reported figures indicate substantial cloud and AI activity, but they are revenue measures—not capex disclosures or proof that the investment will earn an attractive return. What infrastructure is AWS adding?
AWS and NVIDIA announced plans to deploy two million additional NVIDIA GPUs across AWS’s global infrastructure during 2027–2028. This is a planned unit deployment, not a dollar amount for AWS capex, and the announcement does not make Amazon’s company-wide 2026 total an AWS-only figure. AWS and NVIDIA announcement

AWS CEO Matt Garman said customers want freedom to choose AI tools and confidence that they work together. The deployment plan is consistent with AWS building capacity for that demand, but the announcement alone does not quantify expected revenue or returns from the GPUs.

- Different scope: Amazon’s $220 billion is total company capex, while the story is often framed as AWS or AI spending. The reported Amazon figure also includes non-AI categories.
- Different periods and presentation: Microsoft’s figure is a calendar-year expectation, while company outlooks can be reported in different fiscal and accounting contexts. Microsoft also included an estimated component-price effect of about $25 billion.
- Not AI-only totals: The cited figures do not provide a standardized AI-capex breakdown across Amazon, Alphabet, and Microsoft. Their rank by total planned capex cannot be treated as a rank by AI infrastructure spending.
Demand is growing at more than one provider. Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai said Google Cloud revenue grew 82% year over year in Q2 2026, driven by demand for AI infrastructure and AI solutions. That is a company-reported growth figure, not a measure directly comparable to AWS’s quarterly sales or Amazon’s investment total. Alphabet Q2 2026 results

Will the spending pay off?
The payoff remains uncertain. Jassy says much of AWS’s expected 2026 capex will be monetized in 2027–2028 and that a substantial portion already has customer commitments. Those commitments offer management’s rationale for building ahead of demand; they do not establish realized profit or return on invested capital.
Amazon reported trailing-12-month free cash flow of negative $7.6 billion through June 30, 2026, saying the reduction was driven primarily by higher purchases of property and equipment that primarily reflected AI investment. That shows the near-term cash-flow cost of elevated spending, not whether the infrastructure will ultimately generate returns. Amazon Q2 2026 results
