Amazon S3 storage and downloading data are billed separately: keeping objects in S3 costs one set of charges, while sending data out of AWS can add another. The amount depends on the service, destination, Region, and volume—not on a universal per-gigabyte rate. To understand a bill, identify the transfer category first, then separate it from S3 requests, retrieval, and storage costs.

Why downloading data from S3 can cost extra

AWS treats compute, storage, and outbound data transfer as distinct cost drivers. Storing an object does not include the cost of delivering it to a user or another destination. AWS may aggregate outbound transfer charges across services under a data-transfer-out billing category, so a charge associated with an S3 workflow may not appear as a simple per-bucket download fee. AWS’s pricing principles explain the separate cost drivers.

“Egress” is commonly used to mean data leaving a cloud environment, but AWS transfer pricing distinguishes where the data goes. Its categories include transfer to the public internet, between Availability Zones, and between Regions. Specialized services such as CloudFront and Direct Connect have their own transfer charges. Inbound internet transfer and some transfers between AWS services in the same Region are generally not charged, subject to exceptions. See the AWS Global Network FAQs for the current categories and terms.

What can appear alongside S3 egress

A download workflow can generate costs beyond outbound transfer. Check the line items and usage details rather than assuming every charge is an egress fee.

Seagate 2TB Portable Hard Drive | USB 3.0 (STGX2000400)
  • Easily store and access 2TB to content on the go with the Seagate Portable Drive, a USB external hard drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition no software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.
  • Storage: charges for retaining objects in S3.
  • Requests: charges for S3 operations such as GET requests. A large export made up of many small files can involve substantial request activity.
  • Retrieval or lifecycle charges: charges that may apply depending on the storage class and how objects are accessed or moved.
  • Transfer: charges for sending data to the internet, across Regions, or between Availability Zones, as applicable.
  • CDN delivery: when CloudFront serves users, edge-to-viewer transfer and HTTP/HTTPS requests can be billed separately.

AWS describes using S3 server access logs and Athena to classify requests associated with transfer costs. Its S3 transfer-cost analysis guide explains that approach and helps distinguish transfer-related requests from other S3 activity.

What the free transfer allowances cover

AWS’s Global Network FAQ states that 100 GB per month of data transfer out to the internet is free across AWS services and Regions, aggregated globally. China and GovCloud are excluded from that allowance. It is not 100 GB for every bucket, account Region, or service. AWS also states that CloudFront has a separate 1 TB monthly free data-transfer-out allowance. These are distinct allowances; check the current FAQ and your account’s applicable terms before estimating a bill.

Seagate Portable 5TB External Hard Drive HDD – USB 3.0 for PC, Mac, PS4, & Xbox - 1-Year Rescue Service (STGX5000400), Black
  • Easily store and access 5TB of content on the go with the Seagate portable drive, a USB external hard Drive
  • Designed to work with Windows or Mac computers, this external hard drive makes backup a snap just drag and drop
  • To get set up, connect the portable hard drive to a computer for automatic recognition software required
  • This USB drive provides plug and play simplicity with the included 18 inch USB 3.0 cable
  • The available storage capacity may vary.

The AWS FAQ also says transfer from AWS services such as S3 to CloudFront is free. That covers the origin-to-CloudFront leg, not all delivery: CloudFront separately charges for data transferred from edge locations to viewers and for HTTP/HTTPS requests. Pricing depends on geography, usage, and selected features. A CDN can make sense for recurring delivery of cacheable content, but it is not a blanket no-cost route for exporting data. See the CloudFront documentation and current AWS pricing for the details relevant to your setup.

How to find the source of a charge

  1. Open Billing and Cost Management. Use Cost Explorer to inspect the charge by time period, service, Region, and available usage or billing dimensions. Look for the transfer category and direction rather than treating the total as an S3 storage charge.
  2. Map the actual data flow. Record the source service and Region, destination, and approximate volume. Distinguish internet delivery from cross-Region or Availability Zone transfer; specialized services may use their own pricing.
  3. Estimate using your own inputs. Enter the relevant services, Regions, destinations, and volumes in the AWS pricing calculator. The applicable rate depends on those details and current pricing, so a generic per-GB figure can mislead.
  4. Attribute S3 activity when needed. If the bill does not make clear which requests contributed, follow AWS’s server-access-log and Athena method to classify S3 requests associated with transfer costs.
  5. Keep unlike charges separate. Compare transfer with GET/request charges, storage-class retrieval, storage, CloudFront viewer delivery, and any migration-device or shipping costs.

Options for recurring delivery or a move off AWS

Use CloudFront for recurring public delivery

For content regularly served to users, evaluate CloudFront using the audience’s geography, cache behavior, request volume, and transfer volume. AWS reports that Arc XP reduced data-transfer costs by $500,000 per year using CloudFront and Lambda@Edge in a customer story published in 2023. That is a result for one customer, not a typical saving or a forecast for another workload. Read the Arc XP case study.

Ask about AWS’s move-off-AWS process

AWS describes an eligibility-based process for customers moving off AWS to request free data transfer out. Its announcement and FAQ set conditions, including a completion window, and say that specified specialized transfer services are not necessarily covered. Contact AWS Support—and your account team where relevant—to verify current eligibility and terms before planning a large export. Do not assume that all associated service, request, or migration costs will be waived. AWS’s announcement explains the process.

Compare a physical transfer for a large migration

For a large one-time export, a physical transfer device may be worth comparing with network transfer. Include data-transfer, S3 request and storage, device, and shipping costs, along with operational constraints. A dataset containing millions of small files can make request charges relevant even when the overall data volume is large. AWS lists these considerations on its Snowball pricing page. The available information does not establish a universal break-even volume, so calculate both paths for the specific dataset and schedule.
