Amazon’s Project Kuiper is now Amazon Leo, the company’s low Earth orbit (LEO) satellite broadband network. The name changed on November 13, 2025. Amazon is building a system of satellites, ground stations and customer antennas to connect places that terrestrial networks do not reach well, but a network under deployment is not the same as a service that is open everywhere: broad availability, service locations and customer pricing are not established by the company’s published rollout information.
What is Amazon Project Kuiper?
Project Kuiper was the development name for Amazon’s satellite internet project. Amazon now calls the network Amazon Leo. Its aim is to deliver broadband through satellites in low Earth orbit, complementing terrestrial connections and extending connectivity to customers and organizations in locations where existing networks are limited. Amazon’s current overview describes a planned constellation of more than 3,000 satellites. Amazon’s Amazon Leo overview
That scale describes the intended system, not a completed network. Amazon’s June 2026 deployment update reported a smaller number of satellites in orbit; the difference matters when interpreting announcements about the planned constellation and the service available today.
How does Amazon Leo work?
The network is designed as a chain connecting a customer terminal to orbiting satellites, then to ground infrastructure and terrestrial networks. Amazon describes three main parts:
#1 Best Overall
- FULLY AUTOMATIC SATELLITE ANTENNA: The PL‑7000 DISH Playmaker uses automatic acquisition technology to locate DISH satellite positions without you having to manually aim it.
- RUGGED PORTABLE DESIGN: Compact and lightweight with a high‑strength military‑grade aluminum reflector and easy‑grip handle, the Playmaker offers enhanced durability and signal gain for outdoor use on RVs, campers, cabins, or tailgating.
- INCLUDED ACCESSORIES AND EASY INSTALLATION: Supplied with a 25‑foot RG‑6 coaxial cable and powered via the DISH Solo HD receiver through a single coax connection, this antenna is easy to install.
- DISH COMPATIBILITY: Designed exclusively for DISH network programming, the Playmaker integrates with Solo HD receivers and optional mounts such as the TR‑1518 tripod and RK‑4000 RV roof kit.
- TRUSTED U.S.-BASED DESIGN: Built on decades of Winegard technology expertise, delivering dependable performance, and U.S.-based servers for privacy and security, eliminating foreign monitoring concerns.
- Satellites in low Earth orbit: They relay customer traffic and are intended to communicate with one another using optical links.
- Gateway stations: Ground antennas connect the satellite network to terrestrial infrastructure. Amazon says these gateways link to AWS regions over dedicated fiber.
- Customer terminals: An antenna at the customer’s location sends and receives data over the satellite link.
From a gateway, traffic can continue to the public internet, AWS resources, private networks or other cloud providers. Amazon describes this design in its technical explanation of how Project Kuiper uses AWS. It is the company’s description of the architecture, not independent evidence of network performance.
When will Amazon Kuiper be available?
Amazon began full-scale satellite deployment in April 2025. Its June 5, 2026 update said initial service rollout was planned during 2026, but that announcement does not by itself establish that customers can sign up in a particular place. Amazon’s public materials cited here do not settle current country-by-country availability, residential plan terms, prices or general consumer ordering for terminals. Check Amazon Leo’s current customer-facing availability information for your location rather than treating a planned rollout as an open launch.
| Date or period | What Amazon reported |
|---|---|
| April 2025 | Full-scale deployment began. |
| June 5, 2026 | Amazon reported more than 330 satellites deployed across 12 missions since full-scale deployment began, and said it had secured more than 100 launches across five rocket types: Atlas V, Ariane 6, Falcon 9, Vulcan Centaur and New Glenn. The launch commitments are not all completed launches. |
| During 2026 | Amazon said an initial service rollout was planned. That statement is not a published schedule for general availability in every market. |
Amazon’s June 2026 update also described launches from Arianespace, Blue Origin, SpaceX and United Launch Alliance as part of deployment. The mix of launch providers supports a multi-rocket deployment plan; it should not be read as evidence that every contracted mission has flown. Amazon’s June 2026 deployment update

How fast is Amazon Leo internet?
Speeds published for Amazon Leo hardware are advertised capabilities, not independent measurements or a promise of what a household will experience. Amazon’s November 24, 2025 enterprise announcement lists three customer antenna tiers—Leo Nano, Leo Pro and Leo Ultra—and describes Ultra as an advanced phased-array terminal with maximum advertised speeds of up to 1 Gbps download and 400 Mbps upload. The announcement also describes Ultra as weather-resistant, with integrated hardware and no moving parts, and with enterprise networking features. Amazon’s Leo Ultra announcement
The cited announcement does not provide equivalent speed specifications for Nano and Pro, nor does it establish that every antenna can be ordered by consumers. It said select business customers could test production hardware and software through an enterprise preview. That is evidence of a limited business preview at the time of the announcement, not general consumer availability. Actual customer speeds and service terms require published, location-specific offers and measured results.
How is Amazon Leo different from Starlink?
A reliable provider comparison requires current, like-for-like evidence for the customer’s location: whether service is available, monthly and equipment charges, advertised and measured speeds, latency, data limits or prioritization, installation and portability, and the kind of support offered to consumers or enterprises. The Amazon announcements cited here do not establish comparable current terms for both networks, so they do not support a defensible claim that one is faster, cheaper or more widely available. Compare the providers’ current offers for the same location and use case before choosing.

What could Amazon Leo add for phones and mobile coverage?
Amazon and Globalstar announced a definitive agreement on April 14, 2026 under which Amazon would acquire Globalstar. Amazon also announced an agreement with Apple to support satellite services on supported iPhone and Apple Watch models. These announcements should be understood as agreements, not proof that an acquisition has closed or that every planned service is operating. Amazon’s and Globalstar’s April 2026 announcement
Separately, Amazon says its own next-generation direct-to-device system is planned to begin deployment in 2028. The company intends to work with mobile network operators to extend voice, text and data beyond terrestrial coverage. Those are future plans, not services to assume are available from Amazon Leo now. Amazon’s enterprise announcements also name business customers and partners, while its deployment update identifies aviation and mobility as intended service areas; these indicate areas of interest, not consumer booking or device offers.

In 2019, Amazon reported that the U.S. Federal Communications Commission had approved a 3,236-satellite Project Kuiper constellation for service in the United States. That is a historical account of a U.S. authorization; it does not establish current operational milestones or permissions in other countries. Amazon’s 2019 FCC announcement

Satellite broadband also depends on international spectrum coordination. In a March 2026 policy article, Amazon argued that existing equivalent power flux density (EPFD) rules constrain newer non-geostationary satellite systems. That is the company’s advocacy position, not a neutral finding by a regulator. The article cites a United Nations estimate that 2.6 billion people worldwide still lacked broadband access in 2026. What to verify before relying on Amazon Leo
- Service address: Confirm that Amazon Leo is accepting customers at the specific location, not merely planning a regional rollout.
- Customer type: Check whether an offer is for residential users, businesses, government customers or an invitation-only preview.
- Total cost and terms: Look for the monthly charge, equipment cost, installation requirements, data policies and any contract conditions in the actual offer.
- Performance expectations: Distinguish a manufacturer’s maximum specification from measured service results for customers under comparable conditions.
- Mobile features: Confirm whether a claimed phone or wearable capability is already supported and operational, or remains tied to a future deployment or announced agreement.
Amazon Leo is a substantial satellite broadband buildout in progress, with an announced multi-part network and a planned initial service rollout. Its eventual reach and usefulness for an individual customer depend on local availability and actual service terms—not on the size of the proposed constellation alone.
