You can stream from an Amazon EC2 Linux instance to YouTube by running an encoder in a Docker container and supplying the server URL and stream key from YouTube Studio. This guide uses the AWS-documented Docker installation path for Amazon Linux 2023. The exact container image, run command, and EC2 size depend on the encoder and workload; there is no universal image or instance choice established here.
Before you start
Check that your YouTube channel can stream
YouTube says a channel must be verified and must not have had a live-streaming restriction in the previous 90 days. The stated minimum age for live streaming is 16. First-time activation may take up to 24 hours, so enable live streaming before the day you plan to broadcast. See YouTube’s live-streaming eligibility guidance.
Choose an encoder and EC2 workload
This walkthrough installs Docker on Amazon Linux 2023; it does not prescribe a particular encoder image or container command. Select a maintained image compatible with your EC2 processor architecture, codec, resolution, frame rate, and persistence requirements. Confirm how it accepts the stream URL and key, and how it handles restarts. CPU or GPU needs and EC2 cost depend on those choices, runtime, and AWS region; the available documentation does not establish a generally correct instance size or price.
Create a YouTube stream and get its connection details

Open YouTube Studio and go to the Live Control Room. Create a stream or schedule one for later.

Copy the server URL and stream key shown for that specific stream. Enter both in your encoder’s settings; do not substitute details from a different scheduled stream.

Prefer the RTMPS server URL if your encoder supports it. YouTube describes RTMPS as RTMP over TLS/SSL. The regular RTMP address is not the encrypted RTMPS endpoint; copy the URL shown in Live Control Room and verify that it uses
rtmps. See YouTube’s RTMPS guidance.
Treat the stream key like a password: do not commit it to a source repository, bake it into a publicly accessible image, or expose it in logs or screenshots. Use the selected encoder’s supported secret or environment-variable mechanism, and restrict access to whoever needs to operate the stream. If the key is exposed, reset it in Live Control Room and update the encoder.

Launch EC2 and install Docker
Use the Amazon Linux 2023 host path
Launch an Amazon Linux 2023 EC2 instance appropriate to the encoder you selected, then connect to it with your normal administrative access. AWS documents these commands for installing and starting Docker on Amazon Linux 2023:
sudo yum update -y
sudo yum install docker
sudo service docker start
sudo usermod -a -G docker ec2-userAfter adding ec2-user to the Docker group, log out and reconnect so the new group membership takes effect. Check that the Docker client can reach the daemon:
docker infoIf Docker reports that the daemon is unreachable, check that the service started. AWS notes that a reboot may be needed if the daemon remains inaccessible. Consult the current AWS Docker installation instructions before deployment because operating-system and package steps can change.

Run a suitable encoder container
Choose the container image and command from the encoder’s own maintained documentation. Check that the image supports your instance architecture and that its required encoder, codec, and runtime dependencies are present. Configure the encoder to read the stream URL and key securely, and make sure any configuration or media files it needs persist across container replacement or host restart.
The AWS host-installation steps above do not identify or validate an encoder image. Do not assume that an arbitrary Docker image can encode your chosen resolution and frame rate, or that a generic container command will work. Test the selected image and its exact settings before relying on it for a scheduled broadcast.

Use outbound connectivity to YouTube
In this setup, the encoder on EC2 initiates an outbound connection to YouTube’s ingest endpoint. Do not open a public inbound RTMP port just because the protocol is called RTMP. Keep administrative access such as SSH limited to trusted source addresses, and ensure the instance can reach the selected YouTube ingest URL and port. The sources cited here do not define a complete EC2 security-group or VPC egress rule set, so confirm the required network policy for your selected endpoint and environment rather than copying an unverified rule.

Set resolution, frame rate, bitrate, and keyframes
YouTube says to specify resolution, frame rate, and bitrate in the encoder. Its recommended bitrate depends on the selected resolution and codec, so use the current YouTube encoder settings guidance for your exact format instead of applying one bitrate to every stream. YouTube recommends a two-second keyframe interval and says not to exceed four seconds.
The EC2 host needs enough sustained outbound bandwidth for the encoder’s combined stream bitrate. YouTube advises keeping that total within available upload bandwidth with a 20% margin. This means measuring or validating the instance’s outbound capacity under realistic conditions—not relying on the viewer’s download speed or a brief best-case result.

For a scheduled stream, wait for the incoming feed to appear in Live Control Room preview. Check the video, audio, and stream-health indicators before starting the live event there. For an immediate stream, follow YouTube’s encoder workflow after entering the URL and key.

Run an end-to-end test with representative movement and audio. Confirm the watch page works, inspect preview and stream health, and watch for stalls or degraded quality.

During the event, monitor audio and video and leave time to correct problems before the intended start. YouTube recommends preparing the encoder well ahead of the broadcast and checking the preview before going live.

To end the broadcast, stop the feed from the encoder. YouTube says streams under 12 hours are automatically archived.

Troubleshoot common problems
