Leaving a phone screen on drains its battery, but screen-on time alone is not established as a direct cause of battery damage. The display risk is different: on OLED phones, showing the same bright, high-contrast image for a prolonged time can cause temporary image persistence or, in more extreme cases, lasting burn-in. A manufacturer’s built-in Always On Display (AOD) is a separate, model-specific feature.
What “damage” means for the battery
Screen-on time uses power
An active display consumes energy, and both brightness and time on screen affect how quickly the battery drains. Apple identifies long onscreen activity and high brightness as contributors to battery use. On an iPhone, check Settings > Battery for onscreen activity and battery usage; labels and layout can vary by software version. Apple recommends reducing brightness and using auto-lock to limit unnecessary screen time. Apple’s battery-drain guidance
Using more power can mean charging sooner for your particular routine. That is not the same as proving that an illuminated screen directly damages battery chemistry.

Apple describes battery lifespan as affected by chemical age and factors including temperature history and charging pattern. It warns that using or charging an iPhone in very hot conditions can permanently reduce battery lifespan. The official guidance reviewed does not quantify a direct battery-ageing effect from screen-on time alone. Apple’s capacity figures are design targets under ideal conditions, not measurements of screen use: iPhone 14 and earlier are designed to retain 80% of original capacity after 500 complete charge cycles, while iPhone 15 models are designed to retain 80% after 1,000 cycles. Actual capacity depends on regular use and charging. Neither figure isolates the effect of leaving the display on. Apple’s battery-health guidance
When an always-on image can affect the screen
For OLED displays, the concern is not simply that the screen is lit; it is prolonged exposure to the same image, particularly when that image is high contrast and brightness is high. Apple says OLED displays may show slight visual changes with extended long-term use. It distinguishes temporary image persistence, which can disappear after a few minutes of normal use, from burn-in that may occur in more extreme prolonged-use cases. Google also warns that the same image remaining onscreen for a long time at high brightness can affect colors or cause burn-in. ASUS characterizes this as an extreme-use scenario and likewise advises against keeping the same image at maximum brightness for a long time. Google Pixel screen guidance · ASUS display guidance

There is no universal number of hours after which burn-in occurs in the cited manufacturer guidance. The risk depends on the panel, content, brightness, duration, and repeated use; ordinary screen use does not make burn-in inevitable.

How a built-in Always On Display differs
A phone maker’s AOD is not necessarily equivalent to leaving the entire screen active with a fixed image. Samsung states that its Galaxy AOD feature will not cause screen burn-in, while noting that turning AOD off can save battery power. That assurance is specific to Samsung’s Galaxy feature; it should not be extended to third-party apps or another manufacturer’s implementation. Samsung’s Galaxy Always On Display guidance
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How to reduce battery drain and display risk
- Let the screen turn off when you are not using it. Use auto-lock or a shorter sleep timer rather than leaving a full display active unnecessarily.
- Keep brightness at the default or lower it. Auto-brightness can help avoid prolonged high brightness.
- Avoid a static image at maximum brightness for a long time. This is the use pattern manufacturers identify as a concern for OLED persistence or burn-in.
- Limit excess heat. Google advises avoiding excess heat as part of Pixel screen protection; Apple separately warns that very hot use or charging can reduce battery lifespan.
- Use the phone’s built-in AOD as documented for your model. Do not assume a third-party app receives the same protections or guarantee.
Google recommends the default sleep timer or two minutes or less, default or lower brightness, and avoiding excess heat. Apple and ASUS also recommend auto-brightness and shorter screen-off timing. Exact settings and availability vary by phone and software. Google advises against installing apps that promise to reduce burn-in; such an app should not be treated as restoring worn pixels. If a residual image remains visible, the right service option depends on the device and its warranty terms; the cited guidance does not establish a universal repair or warranty outcome.

Which situation are you concerned about?
- Screen on for longer battery use: Expect faster battery drain, especially at high brightness. This is energy consumption, not by itself evidence of battery damage.
- Static content left on an OLED screen: Persistent high-contrast imagery at high brightness is the situation manufacturers flag for image persistence or burn-in risk.
- Samsung Galaxy AOD: Samsung’s assurance applies to its built-in feature, not every always-on implementation.
- Another phone or display type: Check that model’s manufacturer guidance. OLED-specific advice should not be applied indiscriminately to every display technology.
