Use YouTube Studio to check when your viewers are active, then compare live and on-demand results for your own audience before deciding whether continuous streaming is worthwhile.
YouTube says publish time is not known to affect a regular video’s long-term performance, though timing may help early viewership for Live and Premiere. Commute relevance depends on your viewers’ activity, time zones, devices, and your channel’s own results—not on a universal 6–9 a.m. or 4–7 p.m. rule.
What YouTube’s guidance says about timing
YouTube Help says, “Publish time is not known to impact a video’s long-term performance.” It also says publishing when your audience is most active can benefit early viewership for Live and Premiere, but is not known to affect a video’s long-term viewership.
That distinction matters: a live stream may be useful when you want to reach viewers who are active at a particular time, but the guidance does not establish that an always-on stream beats scheduled uploads over time or specifically during commutes.

Check when your viewers are active
In YouTube Studio, open Analytics and review the Audience tab’s “When your viewers are on YouTube” report. YouTube describes this as activity across YouTube during the last 28 days and says it can help with planning a live stream or Premiere. It shows when your channel’s viewers were online; it does not tell you whether they were commuting or prefer live content.
- Open YouTube Studio and select Analytics for your channel.
- Go to the Audience tab and find “When your viewers are on YouTube.”
- Review the activity pattern in the time zones and geographies relevant to your channel.
- Use it as a planning clue for a live stream or Premiere, not as proof that a 24/7 stream will perform better.
Compare live streams with scheduled uploads
Use YouTube Analytics to compare similar content and periods. YouTube documents metrics for live and on-demand videos, including watch time and audience retention; live-stream reporting also includes average and peak concurrent viewers. Traffic sources and devices can help you understand how viewers found and watched content.

| What to compare | What it can help you assess |
|---|---|
| Early viewership and live concurrency | Whether viewers join while a stream is live, including average and peak concurrent viewers. |
| Watch time and audience retention | How much content viewers watch and how viewing changes over time. |
| Traffic sources and devices | How viewers discover content and which devices they use. |
| Geography and relevant time zones | Whether activity aligns with the audience and regions you are trying to reach. |
Compare like with like where possible, and distinguish early response from longer-term performance. Your own results can inform a publishing choice; the public sources do not establish a universal commute-window threshold or prove that continuous live programming causes better results.
Should you livestream during commute hours or schedule uploads?
Choose based on your channel’s audience patterns and goals. A scheduled upload may suit content viewers can watch at any time; a live stream or Premiere may be worth testing when your audience is active and you want to reach them in the moment. The “When your viewers are on YouTube” report can help with timing, but it does not identify commuters.
