Alt+Tab is working normally when it switches between open applications on the desktop you are currently using. If it does not, start by confirming the key sequence, then check which windows the switcher is set to include. Microsoft’s documentation explains how the shortcut and its settings behave, but it does not identify one universal cause or repair for a shortcut that stops responding. The steps below separate expected behavior from a possible fault so you know which fix, if any, applies to your situation.
Confirm the key sequence first
Microsoft’s How to Multitask in Windows guide, which applies to Windows 10 and Windows 11, describes the shortcut this way: “The Alt + Tab keyboard shortcut allows you to quickly switch between open applications in the current desktop.” Use it in this order:
- Press and hold Alt.
- Tap Tab once. The switcher appears with your open windows.
- While still holding Alt, tap Tab again to move through the list.
- Release Alt to switch to the highlighted window.
Releasing Tab too early or letting go of Alt before the switcher appears is a common reason the shortcut seems to do nothing. Try once more with a slower, deliberate press before moving on.

Use a built-in alternative while you troubleshoot
If you need to keep working, these routes also switch between windows and provide a useful comparison:
#1 Best Overall
- KEYBOARD: The keyboard works for Windows with hot keys that enable easy access to Media, My Computer, Mute, Volume up/down, and Calculator
- EASY SETUP: Experience simple installation with the USB wired connection
- VERSATILE COMPATIBILITY: This keyboard is designed to work with multiple Windows versions, including Vista, 7, 8, 10 offering broad compatibility across devices.
- SLEEK DESIGN: The elegant black color of the wired keyboard complements your tech and decor, adding a stylish and cohesive look to any setup without sacrificing function.
- FULL-SIZED CONVENIENCE: The standard QWERTY layout of this keyboard set offers a familiar typing experience, ideal for both professional tasks and personal use.
- Windows+Tab opens Task View. Microsoft’s keyboard shortcuts reference lists it as “Windows key + Tab | Open Task View.”
- Task View button on the taskbar opens the same view. The taskbar options are described in Customize the taskbar in Windows.
- Ctrl+Alt+Tab displays thumbnails of open apps. Arrow keys move the selection through them.
If Windows+Tab or the taskbar button works while Alt+Tab does not, the window-switching feature is running and the problem is specific to the Alt+Tab shortcut.
Check what the switcher is set to show
Unexpected contents are usually a settings question, not a failure. Two settings change what Alt+Tab lists:
Rank #2

- Type in Comfort: The design of this keyboard creates a comfortable typing experience thanks to the low-profile, quiet keys and standard layout with full-size F-keys, number pad, and arrow keys
- Durable and Resilient: This full-size wireless keyboard features a spill-resistant design (2), durable keys and sturdy tilt legs with adjustable height
- Long Battery Life: MK270 combo features a 36-month keyboard and 12-month mouse battery life (3), along with on/off switches allowing you to go months without the hassle of changing batteries
- Easy to Use: This wireless keyboard and mouse combo features 8 multimedia hotkeys for instant access to the Internet, email, play/pause, and volume so you can easily check out your favorite sites
- Open Settings > System > Multitasking.
- Review Show tabs from apps when snapping or pressing Alt+Tab. Microsoft documents options that exclude browser tabs or include recent Microsoft Edge tabs in the switcher. The choice you make here decides whether tabs appear as separate entries.
- Review the virtual desktop visibility option. It determines whether Alt+Tab shows windows from the current desktop only or from all desktops. The exact label and placement can differ between Windows versions, so match the wording you see on your screen to the descriptions below.
The two settings combine as follows:
| Virtual desktop setting | Browser tab setting | What the switcher should show |
|---|---|---|
| Current desktop only | Applications only (browser tabs excluded) | Application windows open on the current desktop, with no Edge tabs as separate entries |
| Current desktop only | Include recent Edge tabs | Application windows on the current desktop, plus recent Edge tabs from that desktop |
| All desktops | Applications only (browser tabs excluded) | Application windows from every virtual desktop, with no Edge tabs as separate entries |
| All desktops | Include recent Edge tabs | Application windows from every virtual desktop, plus recent Edge tabs |
If the list matches the row you selected, the shortcut is behaving as configured. If you want a different list, change the setting and test again. These combinations describe how the options are named and intended to work; Microsoft’s page does not give a test of every Windows build.
Tell unexpected behavior apart from a real failure
Use the symptom to decide which path to follow:
| What you see | Most likely category | First check |
|---|---|---|
| The switcher lists Edge tabs or windows from other desktops | Configuration | Settings > System > Multitasking, as described above |
| The switcher appears but skips a window you expect | Configuration or app-specific behavior | The virtual desktop setting, then whether the window is on another desktop |
| Alt+Tab does nothing, but Windows+Tab and the taskbar Task View button work | Shortcut-specific failure, cause not identified | Repeat the key sequence, then run the isolation steps below |
| Alt or Tab does not register in any app | Possible input problem | Type in a text editor to confirm both keys respond, then test with another keyboard if available |
Isolate a complete failure
When the shortcut fails outright, narrow the scope before changing anything:

- Check whether it fails everywhere or in one app. If Alt+Tab works from the desktop but not inside a particular program, the cause is likely that program’s window or focus behavior, not Windows’ switcher.
- Test the built-in routes. Open Task View with Windows+Tab and with the taskbar button. Note whether both respond.
- Test Ctrl+Alt+Tab. If it shows thumbnails, the switcher interface is functioning.
- Check the keys separately. Only if Alt or Tab fails in every program, including a plain text editor, is a hardware or input fault worth considering. In that case a replacement keyboard is a conditional option, to be tried after the fault is confirmed, not a fix that these sources recommend.
These steps are diagnostic checks, not a verified repair sequence. They tell you where the problem sits; they do not prove why it occurs.

Microsoft’s pages document the shortcut’s intended behavior, the Multitasking options, and the built-in alternatives. They do not describe a single root cause for Alt+Tab failures, and they do not provide a confirmed fix for every case.

Community reports sometimes point to a recent update. A Microsoft Q&A post dated 11 November 2025 described Alt+Tab, Win+Tab, and Task Manager problems after an update. It is one user’s anecdotal account, and it does not show that updates cause the problem in general. Treat Windows updates, Explorer restarts, registry edits, and keyboard replacements as possible steps to consider with care, not as guaranteed fixes. The Q&A post is available at Settings, Alt Tab, Win Tab and Task Manager with problems after latest update.
For a broader view of window management in Windows, Microsoft’s Make it easier to focus on tasks page covers related focus and multitasking options.
