No—not with AltStore Classic’s documented workflow. Its “Refresh All” button does not remove the need for AltServer running on a computer. AltStore Classic apps expire after seven days unless refreshed, and the device must be able to reach AltServer over the same Wi-Fi network or a USB connection. AltStore PAL is a separate computer-free option for eligible users, but it does not support every Classic use case.
Why AltStore Classic’s seven-day refresh needs a computer
AltStore describes AltServer as a companion application for a computer that lets AltStore sideload apps onto an iPhone or iPad. In the Classic workflow, the device communicates with the computer running AltServer over the same Wi-Fi network or through USB. That connection is part of refreshing the apps, not just an installation step.
AltStore says apps installed with AltStore expire after seven days and can no longer be opened unless refreshed. The seven-day period is stated on AltStore’s Getting Started page; the page does not state a year for that duration. Refreshing renews the apps for continued use, but it does not change the underlying requirement for AltServer.
What “Refresh All” and background refresh actually do
“Refresh All” is the manual refresh control in AltStore Classic. AltStore also says the app attempts background refreshes during the week. These are two ways to initiate or attempt a refresh; neither is a computer-free signing method. For either to work, AltServer must be available to the device.
#1 Best Overall
- This phone is unlocked and compatible with any carrier of choice on GSM and CDMA networks (e.g. AT&T, T-Mobile, Sprint, Verizon, US Cellular, Cricket, Metro, Tracfone, Mint Mobile, etc.).
- Please check with your carrier to verify compatibility.
- The device does not come with headphones or a SIM card. It does include a generic (Mfi certified) charging cable.
- Tested for battery health and guaranteed to have a minimum battery capacity of 80%.
Background refresh is an attempt, not a guarantee. If an app is close to expiring, open AltStore and check that the refresh succeeds while AltServer is running and reachable. AltStore’s Getting Started page describes the expiration and refresh behavior.
Fixing a failed Classic refresh
If AltStore cannot find AltServer, check that the computer is on and running AltServer, and that the computer and device are on the same Wi-Fi network. AltStore’s troubleshooting guide also suggests a USB connection if Wi-Fi discovery does not work. Public, workplace, or school networks may block device discovery; trying another network or using USB may help.

Can AltStore PAL work without a computer?
Yes. AltStore PAL is a separate official marketplace that AltStore says does not require a computer, and its apps do not have Classic’s seven-day expiration behavior. It is not a way to refresh Classic-installed apps or a universal replacement for Classic.

There are also capability differences. AltStore’s Classic-versus-PAL comparison says PAL does not install IPA files and does not support JIT, while Classic supports IPA sideloading and JIT. Check those limits before switching if you rely on either capability.
How the options differ
| Option | Computer requirement | App expiration | Availability and requirements | Capability limits |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| AltStore Classic | AltServer on a computer reachable by the device over the same Wi-Fi or USB | Apps expire after seven days unless refreshed | AltStore’s documented setup describes Mac or Windows; requirements may change | Supports IPA sideloading and JIT, according to AltStore’s comparison |
| AltStore PAL | No computer required | No seven-day expiry, according to AltStore’s comparison | Physical presence in the EU, Japan, or Brazil; matching-region App Store account; iOS/iPadOS 18.0 or later | Does not install IPA files or support JIT, according to AltStore’s comparison |

What about a remote AltServer?
A remote computer running AltServer may sound like a way to avoid keeping a personal computer nearby, but the official AltStore pages cited here do not document or endorse a hosted AltServer service. They establish the computer dependency and the Wi-Fi or USB connection options; they do not verify that a third-party host is supported. Treat claims that remote hosting makes Classic computer-free as unverified unless AltStore confirms the arrangement in current official documentation.
