There is no universal best replacement for sudo. If you want to retain sudo-style policy, sudo-rs is the closest fit described here, but it does not support every original sudo feature. run0 uses systemd and polkit rather than sudo’s usual execution path, while doas has its own configuration and Linux implementations that need to be checked individually. Choose based on the policy, authentication, automation, and platform your system actually uses.

What to check before replacing sudo

sudo lets a permitted user run a command as another user under a security policy. The Debian trixie sudo-rs(8) manual describes that policy as being specified in /etc/sudoers. A replacement can provide the same broad capability without behaving the same way in your environment.

  • Policy: Check whether your rules depend on sudoers syntax, plugins, LDAP, mail notifications, or regular-expression command matching.
  • Authentication: Identify how users and automated jobs authenticate today, and whether that method suits your replacement.
  • Process and terminal behavior: Consider whether scripts depend on terminal allocation, signals, environment, or session behavior.
  • Platform: Verify package availability and support for the operating system and release you run.
  • Workflow: Test administrator routines and automation, not only an interactive command that succeeds once.

How the alternatives differ

Tool Policy and authentication Execution model and platform Key qualification
sudo-rs Uses a policy specified in /etc/sudoers; permitted users can select another user and use familiar options such as requesting a login shell or running non-interactively. Command-line environment variables remain subject to policy restrictions. See the Debian trixie manual. Safety-oriented, memory-safe reimplementation of sudo. Its FAQ names Linux and FreeBSD support. See the sudo-rs FAQ. Maintainers document unsupported original sudo features; matching local policy and integrations must be tested.
run0 Authenticates through polkit rather than simply inheriting sudo’s authentication workflow. Runs the command in a fresh service forked by the service manager, with an independent pseudo-terminal; it is an alternative invocation of systemd-run. The manual notes relevant options were added in systemd version 256. See the run0(1) manual. Its systemd service, polkit, and terminal model are material differences from sudo.
doas Runs commands as another user; examples include running as root, selecting a target user, opening a root shell, and checking whether a command is allowed by configuration. See the tldr command reference. Implementation and platform depend on the installed doas port. The available command examples do not establish one compatibility or maintenance profile for Linux doas implementations. Do not assume OpenBSD behavior applies to a Linux port.

When sudo-rs is the closest fit

Choose sudo-rs as the first candidate when you want a sudo-style command and policy approach, especially if your administration already relies on /etc/sudoers. The Debian trixie manual describes it as a safety-oriented, memory-safe reimplementation and documents familiar controls for selecting a target user, starting a login shell, and running non-interactively. These descriptions identify its design and interface; they are not a measured security comparison.

Compatibility is not complete. The project’s FAQ says sudo-rs does not support sending mail, storing sudoers in LDAP, or regular-expression command matching. It also describes integration tests comparing sudo-rs with original sudo, but those tests do not prove that a particular local policy, plugin, or workflow will work. Inventory your configuration and test it on the target distribution before replacing sudo.

When run0 makes sense

Consider run0 when your system uses systemd and a polkit-based authorization workflow fits your administrators and automation. The run0(1) manual says the command runs in a fresh service started by the service manager, uses an independently allocated pseudo-terminal, and does not use SetUID/SetGID file access bits. It is an alternative invocation of systemd-run, not merely another name for sudo.

Those design choices affect how authorization prompts and command execution interact with a terminal and session. The manual says authentication takes place via polkit, isolating the authentication prompt from the terminal “if possible.” Review your polkit rules and test interactive commands as well as scripts; do not assume identical environment, signal, TTY, or session behavior.

When to consider doas

doas is worth evaluating if its command scope and configuration suit your needs. The available tldr examples show the basic use cases: run as root, choose another target user, start a root shell, or ask whether a command is permitted by the configuration file. These examples establish the command’s broad purpose, not feature parity with sudo.

Check which implementation your distribution provides, then consult that implementation’s documentation for policy syntax, authentication, supported platforms, and maintenance status. The OpenBSD manual linked from the tldr reference describes OpenBSD’s doas; its behavior and guarantees should not be transferred to a Linux port without verification.

A practical migration test

  1. Inventory current dependencies. Review sudoers rules, plugins, LDAP use, notifications, command matching, and scripts that depend on environment or terminal behavior.
  2. Confirm the target platform. Check that the candidate is packaged and supported for your distribution and release. For run0, verify the systemd and polkit workflow; for sudo-rs, check its documented feature limits; for doas, identify the exact port.
  3. Recreate policy deliberately. Translate rules using the chosen tool’s own configuration model. Do not assume that syntax or semantics carry over.
  4. Test real workflows. Cover interactive administration, non-interactive automation, target-user selection, login-shell use, environment handling, and any terminal-dependent commands.
  5. Keep recovery access. Retain a tested administrative path while validating the new setup, and switch back if policy or automation fails.

Which one should you choose?

  • Stay with sudo if existing policy, plugins, integrations, or automation make migration risk outweigh the benefits.
  • Evaluate sudo-rs if preserving a sudo-style policy model is the priority and your setup does not require its documented unsupported features.
  • Evaluate run0 if you want systemd service execution and polkit authentication, and can accommodate its different process and terminal model.
  • Evaluate doas if its configuration meets your needs and you have verified the specific implementation available on your operating system.
