If you want to send an internet radio station to YouTube without OBS, choose a tool that can encode an audiovisual YouTube stream—not merely play or encode radio audio. For a local production computer, YouTube lists Wirecast as a software encoder; a cloud workflow can handle scheduled or continuous playback; and AJA HELO Plus is a dedicated hardware encoder. Radio automation and YouTube encoding are separate jobs, so the right setup depends on whether you need live mixing, unattended playout, or both.
First separate radio playout from YouTube streaming
A radio station has at least two distinct tasks: playing its audio on a schedule, and delivering a live audiovisual stream to YouTube. An automation or AutoDJ system can select and play tracks when no DJ is present, but that does not by itself establish that it can encode a YouTube video stream. Conversely, a YouTube encoder may send a live program without scheduling the station’s music.
For YouTube, the output needs video as well as audio. If the station’s source is audio-only, pair it with a still image, visualizer, or video, then send that combined program through a suitable encoder or managed service. An Icecast or Shoutcast encoder alone is not evidence that the tool can create and deliver a video-bearing YouTube stream.

Choose an alternative by operating model
| Your priority | Approach to consider | Main trade-off |
|---|---|---|
| Keep production on a computer with local control | Desktop encoder such as Wirecast | You operate and maintain the computer; radio scheduling may need a separate automation component. |
| Avoid running a production computer continuously | Browser-based or cloud production and playout | Schedules, supported inputs, stream limits, and prices vary by service and should be checked against your workflow. |
| Keep scheduled radio audio playing unattended | Radio automation or AutoDJ, often cloud-hosted | Confirm that it also creates and delivers a YouTube-ready audiovisual stream, or plan for a separate encoder. |
| Use a dedicated physical encoder | AJA HELO Plus | A specialized appliance may be unnecessary for a simple audio stream paired with a still image. |
| Send a program to multiple platforms | Multistream distribution such as Restream or Upstream’s described service | Distribution is not the same as creating the audio program, automating playout, or composing its visuals. |
Compare whether you need live mixing or a schedule, where the system runs, which audio and video inputs it accepts, what platforms it delivers to, and who must respond if a local computer or internet connection fails. A cloud operating model can remove the need to keep your own computer running, but vendor descriptions alone do not establish comparative uptime.

Alternatives to OBS for a YouTube radio stream
Wirecast: desktop software encoder
YouTube’s verified encoder list lists Wirecast for Windows and Mac and says it can stream directly to YouTube or an RTMP destination. The listing also describes YouTube API support for managing, creating, and scheduling live streams from the app. This is a relevant local-software path if you want to operate the production from a computer. Check current platform support and product terms, and confirm that the version and workflow you choose accept your station’s audio and produce the video output you need.

Upstream: cloud and browser workflows
Upstream describes continuous streams, scheduled prerecorded streams, multistreaming, and a browser-based live studio. Its FAQ says users can upload videos, arrange or shuffle a playlist, and run it continuously from cloud servers; it also describes distributing one feed to supported platforms. These are vendor-published feature descriptions, not independent tests. Check current service terms, input compatibility, schedule capabilities, and limits before relying on them.
Upstream’s undated FAQ, accessed October 3, 2026, states that its free plan includes one stream and 24 hours of streaming per month. That stated monthly allowance is not enough for uninterrupted 24/7 streaming. The same FAQ states a limit of up to 10 platforms at once; both figures are vendor claims and may change. Confirm the live offer before choosing a plan.

Restream: cloud distribution
YouTube’s verified encoder list describes Restream as a cloud broadcasting studio for simultaneous distribution to multiple platforms. It may suit a station that already has its program and needs multistream distribution. That listing does not establish that Restream replaces radio automation or every OBS production feature; check its current inputs and workflow against your needs.

YouTube lists the AJA HELO Plus as a compact, standalone H.264 encoder intended for direct YouTube Live streaming and simultaneous recording. It is a physical encoder option for someone who specifically wants dedicated hardware. For a basic radio stream with a still image, that appliance may be more than the workflow requires. Confirm it accepts your actual source setup before buying; compatibility with a particular internet-radio source is not established here.
Radio automation and AutoDJ: the playout layer
Radio automation handles scheduled music and continuity when a DJ is absent; live radio encoding captures a microphone and/or music and sends it to a streaming server. A 2026 comparison by Nobex Radio, which also promotes its own service, uses this distinction and discusses products including BUTT and Mixxx for live radio use. Treat that article as terminology and attributed descriptions, not an independent ranking. An audio-oriented tool still needs a separate YouTube-ready video and encoder workflow unless its current product documentation explicitly confirms otherwise.

Check YouTube access and connection requirements
Enable live streaming before your first broadcast
YouTube says enabling live streaming for the first time may take up to 24 hours. Start setup ahead of the scheduled broadcast rather than assuming a new channel can go live immediately. YouTube also describes an encoder as software or hardware that converts video to a digital format for YouTube; an encoder can use external audio and video hardware.
Use RTMPS only when your encoder asks for connection details
YouTube documents RTMPS as RTMP tunneled through an SSL connection. If an encoder or service exposes manual RTMPS settings, its connection needs a valid YouTube RTMPS ingestion URL and application path, port 443, and the correct hostname for SNI authentication. A managed YouTube integration may handle these details without asking you to enter them yourself. Follow the encoder’s current instructions rather than copying connection values from an unrelated setup.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Set up the workflow and verify the output
- Decide how the station will play audio. Choose live input, scheduled automation/AutoDJ, or uploaded prerecorded material. Confirm that the chosen source can run for the intended duration.
- Provide a video picture. For audio-only radio, select a still image, visualizer, or video and combine it with the station audio. Verify that the result is an audiovisual program, not an audio-only radio stream.
- Select the encoder or cloud service. For local control, check a desktop encoder such as Wirecast. For a scheduled or continuous cloud workflow, review the service’s current input, scheduling, and stream limits. For uploaded-video looping to YouTube, StreamNeo’s workflow is upload, add the YouTube stream key, and go live.
- Enable YouTube Live and connect the destination. Allow time for first-time enablement. Use the service’s YouTube integration where available; if entering RTMPS details manually, follow YouTube’s current connection requirements.
- Test before announcing the broadcast. Confirm that viewers can hear the station audio, see the intended image or video, and that the stream remains active through a representative listening period. Test the schedule or playlist transition if the stream is meant to run unattended.
- Check rights and channel suitability. Use audio and visuals you have rights to stream, and review YouTube’s current copyright and monetization rules. A technically successful stream does not itself establish that content is authorized or eligible for monetization.
Common problems and what to check
- You can hear the station elsewhere, but YouTube gets no audio: the radio source may not be connected to the selected encoder input. Check the audio input and routing, then confirm the YouTube output is receiving sound.
- YouTube receives audio but shows no usable picture: an audio-only radio encoder does not supply video. Add and route a still image, visualizer, or video into a video-capable encoder.
- The stream stops when the computer is shut down: a locally run encoder depends on that computer remaining active. Use a cloud workflow if you need uploaded-video playback to continue without your machine running.
- A scheduled stream does not continue through the playlist: check that the service supports scheduled or continuous playback and that the playlist is configured as intended. A stated monthly free allowance, such as Upstream’s vendor-published 24-hour plan allowance, should not be mistaken for continuous monthly availability.
- The encoder cannot connect over RTMPS: if using manual settings, verify the ingestion URL and application path, port 443, and SNI hostname against YouTube’s current documentation. With a managed integration, check its connection status and follow its own support instructions.
- The stream is live but content triggers a rights concern: check that you have permission for the music, recordings, artwork, and other material in the program. Use the copyright safety checklist as a preflight aid; it does not replace rights clearance or YouTube’s rules.
Or let it run in the cloud
For uploaded recordings or a playlist that should loop on YouTube, use StreamNeo in three steps: upload the video or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; it streams the uploaded quality up to 4K 60fps for one flat price per slot, with automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream. The first day is free with no card, once per account. Monthly billing is $9.99 per month. This is YouTube-only uploaded-video playback, not camera-based live radio production. Start your free day with StreamNeo.
