If you want recorded podcast episodes to play on YouTube while your computer is off, choose a cloud playout service—not another desktop encoder. If you mean a live, hosted podcast with guests and scene changes, choose a browser studio or a locally run production encoder instead. Those jobs have different requirements.
This guide compares the practical alternatives to OBS for a 24/7 livestream, including cloud playlist services, browser studios, Mac and PC software, and a dedicated hardware encoder. It also explains how to keep a YouTube podcast stream running without leaving your computer on.
First decide what “always-on” means
An encoder converts video into a digital format for streaming on YouTube, and YouTube says an encoder can be computer software or standalone hardware. YouTube’s encoder guidance is about sending a stream; the right OBS alternative depends on whether the video is prerecorded or being produced live.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
- Prerecorded episodes or clips: You need continuous playout: a playlist that keeps supplying video to YouTube while nobody is operating a computer.
- A live show with hosts or guests: You need production tools for cameras, microphones, scene switching, graphics, and guest participation. A scheduled playlist service may not provide that workflow.
“Always-on” does not itself establish that a service will run forever, preserve every broadcast, or recover from every failure. Before relying on any option, verify its current stream-duration limits, playlist or loop behavior, reconnect policy, archive behavior, scheduling, and plan boundaries.

Best alternatives for prerecorded 24/7 programming
1. StreamNeo — cloud looping for YouTube
StreamNeo is a cloud service for keeping a YouTube channel live from uploaded videos. Upload a recording or build a playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live; StreamNeo loops the content from the cloud, so your computer and home connection do not need to stay on. It is the first option to consider for unattended podcast episodes: it runs continuously from the cloud, accepts uploads as made up to 4K 60fps at one flat price per slot, and gives each account one free day without a card.
Every slot includes one always-on stream, 10 GB of storage per slot pooled across active slots, looping and playlists, automatic recovery if YouTube drops the stream, and StreamNeo team support. The same features apply to every plan; only the billing period changes. The service streams to YouTube, not other platforms.
| Billing period | Price |
|---|---|
| Daily | $0.99 per day |
| Weekly | $2.99 per week |
| Monthly | $9.99 per month |
| 6 months | $49.99 for 6 months |
| Yearly | $89.99 a year |
Billing can be for a day, week, month, six months, or year, and you can cancel at any time. UPI and cards are accepted in India; card checkout is available worldwide. For five or more slots, contact support. Useful free planning tools include the upload-time calculator, cloud-versus-PC cost calculator, and copyright safety checklist.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsGyre and Upstream — other cloud options listed by YouTube
YouTube’s encoder directory describes Gyre as a cloud tool for 24/7 prerecorded video and Upstream as a cloud studio for easy 24/7 streaming. Their inclusion indicates YouTube compatibility, not YouTube endorsement or a guarantee of uptime. Check each provider directly for current pricing, supported playlist rotation, maximum duration, recovery behavior, storage, and archive handling; those details are not established here.
Restream — schedule recorded streams and playlists
Restream documents scheduled prerecorded broadcasts that can run while the operator is offline, and its Playlists feature can stitch multiple videos into one stream. Restream says, “You can even play a series of videos as a single stream with our Playlists feature.” See its prerecorded-video guidance and playlist instructions for the current workflow. Confirm whether the playlist repeats indefinitely, how it behaves at the end of the queue, and which plan limits apply before treating it as a 24/7 replacement.
Alternatives for an attended live podcast
Browser studios: StreamYard or Restream Studio
For interviews, guests, presentations, graphics, and live scene changes, a browser studio is often a closer fit than unattended playout. StreamYard’s guidance is oriented toward browser-based live shows and guest onboarding; it reflects the vendor’s own perspective, not an independent ranking. Restream Studio also runs in a browser and documents graphics, clips, presentations, and guests. These production features do not by themselves establish unattended 24/7 prerecorded playback.

Recommended Free Tools
Ecamm: Mac-based local production
Ecamm is a Mac broadcasting app with direct YouTube Live integration. Its help center says it integrates with YouTube Live and other listed destinations; see Ecamm’s supported-platform information. Confirm your Mac meets the current requirements and that its production controls fit your show. The cited information establishes a local production app, not a managed cloud service for unattended continuous playout.
Other local encoders: vMix, Wirecast, and Streamlabs
Local software can suit a team that wants hands-on control or already has a production setup. Restream’s encoder selection guide includes OBS, vMix, Wirecast, Ecamm, and Streamlabs, describing OBS as free and open source, Ecamm as Mac-specific, and vMix as a professional production tool. YouTube’s encoder directory lists Wirecast among verified software encoders. A directory listing establishes compatibility, not endorsement or guaranteed reliability.
Unlike cloud playout, a locally run encoder relies on the computer, power, internet connection, and restart or recovery arrangements at the site. For an unattended schedule, plan for operating-system updates, crashes, network outages, and who will notice a dropped stream.
Dedicated hardware: AJA HELO Plus
YouTube’s encoder directory lists the AJA HELO Plus as a standalone hardware encoder. Its description says optional PlayToStream can schedule prerecorded media directly to YouTube Live without a computer. That is a useful alternative if you want a fixed appliance instead of a desktop encoder, but the cited description does not establish indefinite looping or automatic rotation through a podcast library. Ask the manufacturer to confirm the exact playlist behavior you need before buying.
Compare the options against your actual workflow
| Approach | Best fit | Where it runs | Prerecorded continuous playout | Guests and live production | Key point to verify |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| StreamNeo | Unattended YouTube episodes or playlists | Cloud | Yes; uploaded videos loop from the cloud | Not a live camera production studio | Storage needs and playlist setup |
| Gyre or Upstream | Cloud-based 24/7 streaming | Cloud | YouTube directory describes 24/7 offerings | Not established by the cited descriptions | Current loop, limits, recovery, and plan details |
| Restream scheduled video / Playlists | Scheduled recordings or a multi-video stream | Service-hosted workflow | Scheduled recordings and playlists documented; indefinite looping not established | Restream Studio has live-show tools | Playlist end behavior and plan limits |
| StreamYard or Restream Studio | Attended interviews and guest shows | Browser | Not established as unattended 24/7 playout | Yes, per their live-show materials | Connection recovery, guest workflow, and plan limits |
| Ecamm, vMix, Wirecast, or Streamlabs | Local, operator-controlled production | Computer; Ecamm is Mac-specific | Not established as managed cloud playout | Production-oriented workflows | Supported OS, monitoring, and recovery plan |
| AJA HELO Plus | Dedicated encoder appliance | Hardware | Scheduled prerecorded media is described; continuous library looping is not established | Hardware encoder workflow | Whether PlayToStream meets the exact rotation schedule |
No consistent current price table or uptime guarantee is established across these alternatives, so compare providers on their current terms rather than assuming equivalent plans. Include more than subscription cost: for a local system, account for always-on hardware, electricity, connectivity, backup power or network, and the time needed to monitor and recover it. Also decide whether you need a local recording, how many destinations you need, and who is responsible for checking the stream.

How to keep a prerecorded YouTube podcast stream running
Set up a cloud playlist service
- Prepare the program: Organize episodes and clips in the order you want viewers to hear them. Confirm that you have rights to stream every audio and video element, including music, intros, guest clips, and cover art.
- Choose a provider for the required playback behavior: Confirm whether it supports a repeating playlist or only a scheduled finite broadcast. Verify maximum stream duration, automatic reconnects, archive handling, storage, and plan limits.
- Connect YouTube: Follow the service’s current instructions to connect your channel or enter the YouTube stream key. Treat the key as a password: do not post or share it publicly, and reset it in YouTube if it is exposed.
- Configure the broadcast: Set the title, description, visibility, and schedule in the provider and YouTube workflow. Check whether the service creates a new broadcast or continues an existing one, and decide how viewers will find the program.
- Test before relying on it: Run a short private or unlisted test if available. Confirm audio and video, playlist order, transitions, end-of-queue behavior, and what viewers see after a disconnect. Then check that the live broadcast is actually active in YouTube Studio.
- Monitor the channel and rights: Review YouTube’s live status and any copyright notices. Keep a person responsible for responding to policy notices, failed payments, playlist changes, or provider-side changes.
Run your own encoder instead
If you specifically want to operate OBS or another local encoder, install the encoder on a dedicated computer, connect a reliable internet link, configure the YouTube stream key and video/audio inputs, then test the complete unattended restart and reconnection path. The machine must remain powered and connected; arrange operating-system updates, automatic restart behavior, encoder relaunch, and an alert or human check for failures. A desktop encoder is useful when you need local scene control, but it does not remove the local computer and network as failure points.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone.YouTube policy and content checks for podcast loops
A technically continuous stream is not automatically eligible for every YouTube feature or immune from enforcement. Use content you own or are licensed to stream, including music beds, archival clips, guest segments, and visuals. YouTube may identify copyrighted material during a live broadcast; respond to Studio notices and do not assume that a recording previously uploaded without a claim is cleared for continuous live use.
- Obtain permission for guest recordings and any third-party excerpts, music, artwork, or video.
- Make titles and descriptions accurately identify a prerecorded or looping broadcast; do not imply that a recording is happening live if it is not.
- Review YouTube’s current live-streaming and monetization policies directly before building a channel strategy around repeated programming.
- Keep the playlist fresh and useful to viewers. The existence of a 24/7 stream does not itself establish audience growth or monetization eligibility.
Troubleshooting common always-on stream problems
The stream stops when the computer is turned off
This usually means the playout depended on a local encoder. Use a cloud service that supports the playback pattern you need, or keep the computer powered, connected, and monitored. A service that schedules a finite prerecorded broadcast may not continue looping after it ends.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →The stream drops and does not come back
Check whether the provider or encoder has a reconnect feature, whether YouTube still has an active broadcast associated with the stream key, and whether the channel or service is showing an error. For local encoding, inspect power, network stability, and whether the encoder relaunched after a crash. Confirm the provider’s recovery behavior rather than assuming all services retry indefinitely.
The playlist ends instead of repeating
Not every playlist feature promises infinite looping. Check the service’s documented end-of-queue behavior and test with a short playlist before scheduling a long broadcast. If the feature is not explicit, ask the provider for confirmation.
Viewers hear silence or see the wrong episode
Preview the source files, playlist order, audio levels, and transitions in a test broadcast. Confirm that the selected media is stored and available to the playout service, and review any upload or format error it reports.

YouTube reports a copyright issue
Review the notice in YouTube Studio and identify the affected track or segment. Replace or remove material you are not authorized to stream, or follow YouTube’s dispute process only if you have a valid basis. Do not repeatedly restart the same infringing content as a workaround.
The service is compatible but still does not meet the workflow
Compatibility with YouTube only confirms that a tool can send a stream to the platform. Recheck whether it supports unattended operation, the specific playlist schedule, recovery, archives, and duration you require. YouTube notes that verified encoders are made by third parties and asks users to evaluate which tool suits their business; directory presence is not an endorsement or uptime promise.
Or let it run in the cloud
With StreamNeo, upload your recording or playlist, add your YouTube stream key, and go live. Nothing has to stay on at home; the videos stream as uploaded up to 4K 60fps at one price per slot, and automatic recovery handles a dropped YouTube stream. The first day is free with no card, and the monthly option is $9.99 per month. Start your StreamNeo free day.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I keep a YouTube podcast livestream running without leaving my computer on?
Yes. Use a cloud playout service that supports your required playlist behavior; locally run encoders depend on the computer staying powered and connected.
Is a 24/7 prerecorded YouTube stream the same as broadcasting a live podcast?
No. A prerecorded loop is continuous playout. A hosted live podcast needs production controls for people, audio/video inputs, guests, and scene changes.
Does YouTube endorse every encoder in its directory?
No. YouTube says the listed encoder products are made by third parties; directory inclusion indicates compatibility, not endorsement or guaranteed uptime.
