Alphabet completed its acquisition of Intersect Power on March 10, 2026, paying $4.75 billion in cash and assuming debt. The deal gives Google control of Intersect’s digital-power and data-center development platform, including its team and multiple gigawatts of projects in development or under construction. It does not mean Alphabet bought every solar, battery, and power asset associated with Intersect.

The strategy is to develop data centers and dedicated power generation in parallel, helping Google bring AI infrastructure online faster as electricity supply, grid interconnection, and transmission become major constraints. The model can reduce some scheduling pressure, but it does not make the campuses independent of the grid, natural gas, regulation, construction risk, or local communities.

What Alphabet bought

Alphabet announced a definitive agreement to acquire Intersect on December 22, 2025. Google had already held a minority stake in the company through an earlier strategic funding round involving Google, Intersect Power, and TPG Rise Climate.

In practical terms, Google bought a platform for developing power-intensive digital infrastructure—not simply a collection of solar farms.

What the $4.75 billion price means

Figure or date What it represents
December 22, 2025 Alphabet announced the definitive acquisition agreement.
$4.75 billion Cash purchase price for the acquired Intersect business, before considering the assumption of debt.
March 10, 2026 The acquisition closed, according to TPG Rise Climate.
$12 billion TPG’s reported total enterprise value for the broader series of transactions, including the sale to Google and the related IPX Power spinout. This is not the cash purchase price paid by Alphabet.

Alphabet’s 2025 Form 10-K, filed before closing, described the transaction as an expected purchase of approximately $4.8 billion in cash plus assumed debt. The final announced cash figure was $4.75 billion.

The distinction between the purchase price and the $12 billion enterprise-value figure matters. Reporting the deal as a $12 billion acquisition by Alphabet would overstate what Google paid for the business it acquired.

What Google did not buy

The transaction did not include all of Intersect’s operating solar, storage, and grid-power assets. Intersect’s existing operating assets in Texas, along with operating and in-development assets in California, were excluded from the acquisition announcement and continued as an independent business.

Following the closing, those grid-tied assets were placed into IPX Power, which TPG described as an independent power producer. IPX’s announced portfolio included 4.4 GW of solar photovoltaic capacity and 8.8 GWh of battery storage in construction or operation, along with a multi-gigawatt development pipeline.

That separation produces a more accurate description of the deal: Google acquired Intersect’s digital-power and data-center platform and related development assets, while IPX Power retained a separate grid-tied power business. It would be misleading to say Alphabet now owns every Intersect solar and battery project.

Why AI data centers are driving the strategy

AI model training, inference, cloud services, and conventional digital workloads all require data centers. AI systems can increase both the amount of computing equipment installed at a site and the speed at which new capacity must be built. That translates into a need for more electricity, more substations and cooling equipment, and reliable power available on a demanding schedule.

The traditional approach is to choose a data-center site, request a grid connection, wait for interconnection studies and transmission upgrades, and then build the campus. In regions with crowded interconnection queues or limited transmission, the power process can delay the technology project.

Google and Intersect’s model is to coordinate several pieces at once:

  1. Identify a suitable data-center location.
  2. Develop new generation and storage nearby. Projects can include solar, wind, batteries, and firming generation.
  3. Build the data-center load and power assets in parallel.
  4. Use the grid as part of the overall system rather than treating a data center as an isolated facility.

Google described this approach in its December 2024 partnership announcement as a way to place data centers near new clean-energy plants and potentially reduce the amount of new transmission required. The company also characterized colocated generation as a complement to new transmission and better use of existing grids, not a replacement for them.

This is a form of vertical integration around the development process. Google is not merely buying electricity through a long-term contract; it is acquiring a company that can help develop the campus, generation, storage, and project schedule together.

Key Intersect and Google projects

Meitner Energy Center, Texas

In a June 4, 2026 announcement, Google identified the Meitner Energy Center in Gray and Roberts Counties, Texas. The project combines a new Google data center with more than one gigawatt of wind, solar, and battery-storage systems.

Google and Intersect said the site would use advanced air-cooling and limit water consumption to small-scale domestic uses such as restrooms. That is a company-provided project claim, not an independently audited result. Air cooling can reduce water use, but it does not by itself establish that the entire campus has no environmental footprint.

The announcement also described an approximately 800-acre Caprock Workforce Hub in nearby Wheeler County. Google and Intersect said the hub is designed to house as many as 3,500 construction workers. The facility is intended to support construction activity and workforce development around the project.

The Meitner announcement said most of the site’s electricity would come from clean energy from day one, with a minority share supplied by on-site gas for firming. That detail is important: the project’s generation mix is not the same as claiming that every hour of electricity consumed by the data center will come from wind and solar.

Quantum Clean Energy Project, Texas

Google and Intersect also identified the Quantum Clean Energy Project in Haskell County, Texas. Quantum consists of a 640 MW solar facility paired with 1.3 GWh of battery storage and is intended to be colocated with a Google data center.

The June 2026 materials said Quantum was expected to begin operations in June 2026 and that construction of the associated Google data center had begun. Those are project-status statements and forward-looking expectations, so they should not be treated as a guarantee that commercial operations, full capacity, or the final power mix will arrive exactly on that schedule.

Earlier partnership materials said the first phase of the first colocated clean-energy project was expected to be operational in 2026 and fully complete in 2027. Those targets were made before the projects reached their later development stages and should be rechecked against newer project-specific updates.

Understanding the capacity numbers

News coverage of power projects often mixes different measurements. The distinction is useful when evaluating the Intersect deal:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  • Megawatts, or MW, describe power capacity—the rate at which a generator can produce electricity or a data center can consume it under a particular design.
  • Gigawatts, or GW, are 1,000 MW. A multi-gigawatt project pipeline represents planned capacity, not necessarily operating capacity.
  • Megawatt-hours and gigawatt-hours, or MWh and GWh, describe stored energy. A 1.3 GWh battery does not produce 1.3 GW continuously; its output also depends on its power rating and duration.
  • Development, construction, and operation are different stages. A project in a development pipeline may still require land agreements, permits, financing, interconnection approval, equipment, and construction.

For that reason, the acquisition should not be described as immediately adding several gigawatts of operating power to Google’s fleet. It gives Google access to projects and development capabilities that may produce capacity over time.

Does this make Google’s AI power fully renewable?

No. The public materials support a more limited claim: Google and Intersect are developing campuses around combinations of clean generation, storage, and firming resources, with the stated goal of bringing more clean power online alongside new data-center load.

Solar and wind output varies with weather and time of day. Batteries can shift some electricity across hours, but their duration and charging source matter. A site that needs dependable power may also require grid imports, backup systems, or firm generation. In the Meitner announcement, Google explicitly said a minority share of power would come from on-site gas for firming.

There is also a difference between annual clean-energy matching and hourly carbon-free operation. A company can procure or generate enough renewable electricity over a year to match its consumption while still using grid or gas power during particular hours. The public announcements do not establish that all future Google AI workloads will run on hourly carbon-free electricity.

Likewise, colocating a data center with generation does not make the facility completely off-grid. The projects still involve grid coordination, interconnection decisions, transmission and distribution equipment, fuel supply where gas is used, permitting, and reliability planning.

What the acquisition can—and cannot—solve

Potential advantages

  • Faster parallel development: Google can coordinate data-center construction and power development rather than waiting for one process to finish before starting the other.
  • More control over site selection: The company can evaluate land, generation, storage, grid access, and compute requirements as one infrastructure problem.
  • Reduced exposure to some interconnection delays: Dedicated or colocated generation may lessen dependence on certain transmission upgrades, although it does not eliminate grid requirements.
  • Better alignment with AI hardware planning: Google’s investor materials presented Intersect as part of a broader AI infrastructure strategy that includes data centers, networking, TPUs, CPUs, and GPUs.

Limits and trade-offs

  • It does not eliminate permitting. Generation, storage, substations, gas equipment, roads, and data centers can all face separate regulatory and environmental approvals.
  • It does not remove construction risk. Large projects can face equipment shortages, labor constraints, cost increases, or schedule changes.
  • It does not guarantee lower costs. Building and coordinating generation, storage, and compute campuses requires substantial capital, and the acquisition itself does not prove that the model will be cheaper at every site.
  • It does not eliminate emissions. On-site gas firming and grid electricity can remain part of the supply mix.
  • It does not settle local concerns. Land use, water, roads, noise, tax arrangements, power infrastructure, and regional resource impacts still require scrutiny.

Local jobs and infrastructure commitments

Google and Intersect said the Texas investments would support local employment, workforce development, schools, and community organizations. Google also estimated that each U.S. data-center job creates nine additional local jobs in areas such as maintenance, security, landscaping, HVAC, electrical work, and construction trades.

That nine-to-one figure is a company-published multiplier claim and should be attributed to Google rather than presented as an independently verified economic-impact study. Actual effects will depend on how many workers are local, how long construction lasts, how many permanent jobs remain after construction, and how the projects affect housing, roads, services, and local businesses.

Google also said it would pay for 100% of the power it uses and cover infrastructure needs driven by its growth. These statements describe Google’s stated policy and project commitments. They do not prove that residents will experience no indirect effects from land use, taxes, utility planning, environmental changes, or regional infrastructure demand.

Intersect’s role makes this transaction distinctive. Google acquired a development platform that can work on the demand side and the power side at the same time. That could help Google compete for locations and construction capacity in a market where the limiting factor is increasingly the ability to energize a campus, not only the ability to purchase servers.

However, the deal does not prove that Alphabet has solved the broader energy challenge created by AI. It remains to be seen how quickly the projects reach operation, how much of their electricity comes from each resource, how costs compare with conventional grid-connected development, and whether the model can be repeated in other regions.

What to watch next

  • Whether the Meitner and Quantum projects meet their announced construction and operating milestones;
  • the final generation mix, including the amount and operating role of gas firming;
  • the projects’ interconnection arrangements and dependence on regional grid infrastructure;
  • actual data-center capacity brought online, rather than capacity merely listed in development pipelines;
  • capital spending, financing, and any changes to the scope of the acquired platform;
  • water-use, emissions, land-use, and community-impact data beyond company estimates; and
  • how IPX Power develops the solar and storage assets that were separated from Google’s acquisition.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did Alphabet buy all of Intersect Power?

No. Google acquired Intersect’s digital-power and data-center platform, team, and related projects in development or under construction. Intersect’s specified grid-tied assets were separated into IPX Power, an independent power producer described by TPG Rise Climate.

How much did Alphabet pay for Intersect Power?

Alphabet agreed to pay $4.75 billion in cash and assume debt. TPG also described the broader sale-and-spinout transactions as having a $12 billion total enterprise value, but that is not the cash acquisition price paid by Alphabet.

When did the Intersect Power acquisition close?

The transaction closed on March 10, 2026, according to TPG Rise Climate. Alphabet had announced the agreement on December 22, 2025.

Will Google’s new AI data centers run entirely on renewable energy?

The public information does not support that claim. The projects combine solar, wind, batteries, grid resources, and firming generation. Google said the Meitner project would receive a majority of its power from clean energy from day one, with a minority share supplied by on-site gas for firming.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What is IPX Power?

IPX Power is the independent power producer formed around Intersect’s separated grid-tied power business. Its announced portfolio included 4.4 GW of solar PV and 8.8 GWh of battery storage in construction or operation, plus a multi-gigawatt development pipeline.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Alphabet’s $4.75 billion Intersect acquisition is a strategic bet on controlling more of the path from electricity generation to AI compute. Google gains a data-center and digital-power development platform, but not every Intersect energy asset. The approach may shorten some project timelines and reduce dependence on constrained transmission, yet it remains a grid-connected, construction-heavy infrastructure strategy—not proof of fully renewable, water-free, or risk-free AI data centers.
